Cape Coast Castle
Year of Return Door of No Return Experience

This year marks exactly 400 years since the first slave ship hit the shores of Virginia in the United States and all in the Diaspora are giving the chance to visit, resettle, see, experience and explore the castles, museums, historical sites, landmarks, wildlife, nature and all the country and its people have to offer.

Ghana’s Atlantic Coast is lined with old forts (castles) built by various European powers during the 17th Century. The Cape Coast Castle was built for the slave-trade and is one of the most impressive of Ghana’s old forts. It was originally built by the Dutch in 1637, later expanded by the Swedes, finally the British took control of it in 1664 and turned it into their colonial headquarters. It stayed that way for the next 200 years until they moved the capital to Accra in 1877. The Cape Coast Castle has the history of Ghana, the slave-trade and local culture.

The Year of Return journey would be completed with a visit to this site and it is a “must” see place and Best Ghana Tours will take you through the dungeons and the “door of no return” experience. Other interesting places in the Cape Coast environs or to Cape Coast we would not miss are the Posuban Shrine and the West African Historical Museum, Elmina Castle and Fishing Village.

Thank you so much for this incredible and beautiful experience! Our sympathic and experienced guide was on our side and disposition from the first to the last minute: We were picked up at the airport of Tamale and brought to Mole Motel, from where we started our wonderful tours with our guide, who was able to arrange walking tours, jeep tours, visit of the eco village, boat trip and more considering weather, habits of the animals as well as our personal interests, in order to present us an unforgettable adventure in midst of elephants, bush bocks, and all the wildlife of the Savanne. Thanks to the deep knowledge about nature and culture we learned a lot about animals, nature, culture and current projects of the zone, and furthermore there was enough space for interesting and diverting conversations and laughter after full days. Absolutely to recommend!

We only had one afternoon to spend in tamale, as we were coming from mole park that very day and kept on moving to hohoe the morning after. We called Mashud when we arrived an after a short rest he came to pick us from our place. It was great that it worked so short-term and he also adjusted the city tour to the short time and our wishes. Still we had the chance to see a lot of interesting stuff, take some drinks and share some local food together. We wanted to buy certain things (eg. Shea butter) and he included this very easily. We had the feeling to have really got a nice insight to the city that we had never could have had alone. Plus the very nice personality of Mashud. You can ask him anything and he's a humourous guy to hang out with. Thanks!
