Established as Imperial Forest Research Institute in 1906, the Forest Research Institute (FRI) Dehradun, was first located at Chandhbagh (the present location of the Doon School) on the Mall Road. In 450 hectare area of FRI, a tremendous avian diversity was reported making the species count 186 in four days, which constitute important habitats for birds resulting in record of some new species such as, Sirkeer malkoha (Phaenicophaeus leschenaultii) and Short-toed snake eagle (Circaetus gallicus) reported in the FRI New Forest Campus.

A group of seven fresh water lakes, a stash of nature's bounty and loads of migratory birds and panoramic vistas make this wonderful place called Sattal. A paradise for nature buffs and bird watchers, Sattal has mystery to it that makes it even more charming and photographer's paradise. Year-round, hundreds of species of birds are drawn to this picturesque, forested freshwater habitat. That makes Sattal a popular destination for nature lovers, especially birdwatchers. It’s a great chance for photographers to capture some striking frames as well.

Tungnath is the highest Shiva temple in the world and is the highest of the five Panch Kedar temples located in the mountain range of Tunganath in Rudraprayag district, in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. Tungnath is part of the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary (Kedarnath Musk Deer Sanctuary) and is the home of the much sought after Himalayan Monal - the species voted as the most beautiful bird of India. Plus, winters will surely reward those who want to see the Snow Partridge from close quarters. The main avian attractions of the area are Snow Partridge, Himalayan Monal, Koklass Pheasant, Kalij Pheasant, Golden Eagle, Bearded Vulture (Lammergeier), Upland Buzzard, Himalayan Owl, Spot-winged Rosefinch, Rufous-bellied Woodpecker, European Goldfinch, Ashy Wood-Pigeon, Fire-capped Tit, Spotted Laughingthrush, Variegated Laughingthrush, Nepal Wren-Babbler, Pied Thrush, Long-billed Thrush, Scarlet Finch, Spot-winged Grosbeak, Golden Bush-Robin, White-browed Bush-Robin, Coal Tit, Fire-fronted Serin, Spot-winged Starling, Himalayan Beautiful Rosefinch and Yellow-rumped Honeyguide.

Jim Corbett National Park is very well known for a unique range of bird’s life. You can find here local as well as drifter type. At Corbett, you must visit the moderately new convergence of the rivers Mandal and Ramganga. The forest is regular by the Ultramarine Flycatcher, Long-tailed Broadbill and Blue-winged Minla. Little and Spotted Forktails, Brown Dipper and the Slaty, are easy to see, as are the Long-billed Thrush and Common Green Magpie. Dhikala/Gairal, is the heart of the Corbett National Park. The grassland of Dhikala is the best place for bird watching. More than 50 type’s birds are found here. Large owls include the Brown Fish Owl and the rare Tawny Fish Owl. You can also see Hen Harrier, Red Avadavat, Bright-headed Cisticola, Chestnut-capped Babbler and Grass Owl. In winters, the Ramganga Lake is full by waders, herons, ducks, and egrets in large numbers. Pallases and Osprey Fish Eagle are also commonly seen here. The river Kosi is a best place to view the Great Thicknee, the Ibisbill, and Wall Creeper.
