Fatima – Nazare – Óbidos – Lisbon

Breakfast at the hotel.

Visit the Sanctuary of Fátima, made famous by the apparitions of the Virgin Mary to three shepherd children in 1917. Beyond its religious importance, Fátima also connects to broader Black history in Portugal through Catholic brotherhoods that once included people of African descent, offering community and support within a society shaped by racial inequality and slavery.

Continue to Nazaré, a colorful fishing village. For lunch, we recommend trying a traditional fish stew. Visit the Sítio of Nazaré for breathtaking views of the town and Atlantic coastline.

Before reaching Lisbon, stop in the medieval fortified town of Óbidos, with its picturesque streets and historic walls. Enjoy a tasting of the local cherry liqueur, Ginjinha (included).

This evening, experience a Fado performance, Portugal’s iconic music style, deeply rooted in Lisbon’s cultural melting pot with influences from African, Moorish, and traditional Portuguese music.

Lagos: Museum of the Slave Market

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before departing for Sagres, a name meaning “swept by the wind.” Located at the extreme southwestern tip of Europe, this dramatic Finisterra is a place rich in history and emotion. Visit Sagres Point, partly occupied by a fortress built in the 16th century, and continue to Cape St. Vincent. Rising 75 meters above the ocean, this cape has long been considered a sacred place—known to the Romans as Promontorium Sacrum—and marks the southwesternmost point of Europe.

Lunch will be at your leisure.

In the afternoon, visit Lagos, the former capital of the Algarve from 1576 to 1756. This charming town has been beautifully preserved, retaining its historic character. Walk along its ancient walls and through narrow streets lined with dazzling white houses. It was from Lagos that many African expeditions departed during the Age of Discoveries. Highlights include Infante D. Henrique Square, where a statue of Henry the Navigator stands, and the former slave market, recognized as the first of its kind in Europe.

Continue to Ponta da Piedade, where striking reddish cliffs, sculpted by the ocean into dramatic rock formations and sea caves, contrast vividly with the clear green waters below.

Visit the Antigo Mercado de Escravos (Old Slave Market), housed in the building believed to be Europe’s first slave market. Here, enslaved people from the west coast of Africa were first brought in 1444. The small museum recounts the grim history of slavery in Lagos and the Algarve region, which continued until 1761. Exhibits include interpretation panels in English and Portuguese, along with interactive content and augmented-reality multimedia guides.

At the end of the day, return to the hotel.
