Packing List

When traveling to the Uyuni Salt Flats in Bolivia and the Atacama Desert in Chile, it's crucial to be well-prepared for the unique climates and conditions of these destinations. Here are some essential packing tips and suggestions:

1. Clothing

  • Layered Clothing: Temperatures can vary drastically between day and night. Pack layers to add or remove clothing as needed:
    • Base Layer: Moisture-wicking t-shirts and thermal underwear for warmth at night.
    • Mid Layer: Sweaters or fleece jackets for additional insulation.
    • Outer Layer: A windproof and waterproof jacket to protect against wind and potential rain in Uyuni.
  • Pants: Comfortable, quick-drying pants for daytime exploration and warm, insulated pants for colder evenings.
  • Hats and Gloves: A warm hat and gloves are essential for early morning tours, especially in Uyuni where temperatures can drop below freezing.
  • Wide-Brimmed Hat or Cap: To shield your face from the strong sun during daytime activities.

2. Footwear

  • Sturdy Hiking Boots: For walking on rocky or uneven terrain and providing ankle support.
  • Comfortable Sandals or Sneakers: For lighter activities and to give your feet a break in the evenings.
  • Waterproof Footwear: If visiting during Uyuni’s rainy season, waterproof shoes or rubber boots are helpful for walking on the water-covered salt flats.

3. Sun Protection

  • Sunscreen: High SPF sunscreen is essential, as the UV rays at high altitudes are stronger.
  • Sunglasses: Polarized sunglasses to protect your eyes from the intense glare, especially from the bright white salt flats.
  • Lip Balm: A lip balm with SPF to prevent chapped lips from the dry and sunny conditions.

4. Health and Comfort Items

  • Reusable Water Bottle: Staying hydrated is crucial, especially at high altitudes.
  • Altitude Sickness Medication: Consult your doctor about preventive medication for altitude sickness, such as acetazolamide.
  • Moisturizer: The dry desert air can be harsh on your skin; bring a good quality moisturizer for your face and body.
  • Personal First Aid Kit: Include essentials like band-aids, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, and any personal medication.
  • Electrolyte Packets: Useful for maintaining hydration and energy levels.

5. Photography Gear

  • Camera: A camera with extra batteries and memory cards, as cold weather can drain batteries quickly.
  • Tripod: Necessary for taking night shots of the starry skies in the Atacama Desert and reflection photos in Uyuni.
  • Waterproof Camera Cover: Important for protecting your gear during the rainy season in Uyuni.

6. Travel Essentials

  • Power Bank: Ensure you have a charged power bank for long tours where power outlets may not be available.
  • Adapter and Converter: Bring an adapter for South American plug types and a voltage converter if needed.
  • Flashlight or Headlamp: Useful for early morning or nighttime excursions.
  • Light Backpack: A small daypack for carrying essentials during tours and excursions.

7. Toiletries and Hygiene Items

  • Hand Sanitizer: For quick cleaning when water isn't readily available.
  • Wet Wipes: Useful for refreshing yourself during long tours.
  • Toilet Paper or Tissues: Bring a small roll or pack, as public restrooms may not always have these.

8. Snacks

  • High-Energy Snacks: Pack granola bars, trail mix, or other non-perishable snacks to keep your energy up during long days of exploration.

9. Special Items for Uyuni Salt Flats

  • Props for Photography: Fun items like small toys or objects to create creative perspective photos.
  • Plastic Bags: To protect your electronics and belongings from salt residue, which can be corrosive.

10. Important Documents

  • Passport and ID: Always have your passport, and consider carrying a copy as a backup.
  • Travel Insurance: Ensure your insurance covers high-altitude activities.
  • Cash and Cards: Bring local currency (Bolivian bolivianos and Chilean pesos), as ATMs may be limited in some areas.

Bonus Tips:

  • Avoid Overpacking: Pack versatile items that can be worn multiple times to reduce the load.
  • Quick-Drying Clothes: Choose fabrics that dry quickly and are easy to wash if needed.

Being well-prepared with the right gear and clothing will enhance your comfort and allow you to fully enjoy the otherworldly beauty of the Uyuni Salt Flats and the Atacama Desert.

Travel Tips

Traveling to the Uyuni Salt Flats in Bolivia and the Atacama Desert in Chile offers breathtaking experiences, with their surreal landscapes and unique climates. Here are some key tips and suggestions to make your trip smooth and enjoyable:

1. Best Time to Visit

  • Uyuni Salt Flats: For the reflective mirror effect, visit between December and March when the rainy season creates a thin layer of water on the flats. For dry, polygonal salt formations, travel between May and October.
  • Atacama Desert: The region is a year-round destination. However, spring (September-November) and fall (March-May) offer mild temperatures and fewer crowds.

2. Packing Essentials

  • Clothing: Bring layered clothing due to significant temperature fluctuations—days can be warm while nights are extremely cold, especially in Uyuni.
  • Footwear: Comfortable, sturdy shoes for walking on salt flats and rocky desert terrain.
  • Sun Protection: Pack sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat to protect against the intense desert sun.
  • Warm Gear: A warm jacket and thermal layers for early morning excursions and nighttime stargazing.

3. Health and Comfort

  • Altitude Acclimatization: Both destinations are at high altitudes (Uyuni at around 3,656 meters/12,000 feet, Atacama’s main town of San Pedro at 2,400 meters/7,900 feet). Allow time for acclimatization to avoid altitude sickness. Hydrate well and consider medications like acetazolamide if you are prone to altitude sickness.
  • Hydration: Always carry water to stay hydrated, as the high altitudes and dry climate can dehydrate you quickly.
  • Snacks: Bring light, high-energy snacks to keep your energy up during excursions.

4. Photography Tips

  • Uyuni Salt Flats: Bring props like miniatures or toys to create fun, perspective-based photos. A wide-angle lens is also helpful for capturing the vastness of the flats.
  • Atacama Desert: Golden hour (just after sunrise or before sunset) provides stunning light for capturing the red and ochre hues of the landscape.
  • Night Photography: The Atacama Desert is known for its crystal-clear skies, making it perfect for astrophotography. Bring a tripod and camera settings guide for star and Milky Way shots.

5. Tours and Activities

  • Uyuni Salt Flats: Book a reputable 3-day 4x4 tour to explore not only the flats but also the surrounding attractions like Incahuasi Island, colorful lagoons, and geysers.
  • Atacama Desert: Don’t miss exploring the Valley of the Moon, El Tatio Geysers, the high-altitude salt flats (e.g., Salar de Atacama), and star-gazing tours.
  • Local Guides: Opt for experienced local guides who can provide insight into the history, geology, and culture of the area.

6. Travel Logistics

  • Visas and Documentation: Check visa requirements for Bolivia and Chile based on your nationality.
  • Currency: Carry local currency (Bolivian bolivianos and Chilean pesos). While some areas accept cards, having cash is essential for more remote areas.
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi may be limited or slow in remote areas. Consider an international data plan or offline maps for navigation.

7. Sustainability Tips

  • Leave No Trace: Protect these fragile environments by not littering and following all local regulations.
  • Respect Wildlife: Avoid disturbing animals and birds, and maintain a safe distance when taking photos.
  • Support Local: Choose eco-friendly and local tour operators to contribute to the local economy and environmental conservation efforts.

8. Cultural Sensitivity

  • Interactions: Learn a few basic phrases in Spanish, as it will be appreciated and helpful during your travels.
  • Respect Traditions: Understand that these regions have a deep cultural heritage; be respectful when visiting indigenous sites or meeting local communities.

Enjoy your travels to these otherworldly landscapes!

Other Tips

Dont forget Important Documentation:

  • Travel insurance details (including emergency contact information)
  • Valid Passport
  • Copy of passport (both in physical and digital form)
  • COVID-19 vaccination records
  • Trip itinerary (including accommodation and transportation details)

Helpful Tip: Make two copies of your passport, travel insurance papers, and other essential travel documents. Diversify your copies by storing them electronically on your computer/smartphone and separating them in your money belt, carry-on bag, and checked luggage. Keep your vaccination records with your passport.

Dont forget:

  • Debit card (with a four-digit PIN)
  • Credit card
  • Petty cash (in pesos or Bolivian Bolivianos, ~100)
  • Cross-body bag or travel purse (to avoid theft when out walking around)

Helpful Tip: You can withdraw money from ATMs, and it's usually the most convenient way to get local currency. However, it's always a good idea to bring some petty cash just in case of an emergency. Be mindful of the denomination you carry, as some shops and vendors may not accept large bills.

Always keep an eye on your belongings and be mindful of pickpockets and scams. If possible, leave valuable items at home or store them in a secure location such as a hotel safe. And don't forget to leave room in your luggage for souvenirs and gifts!

Money:

  • Take out money from an ATM. Conversion rates are about equal to the dollar.
  • Be mindful that some ATMs charge a crazy conversion rate, like 11-15%. Do not use these ATMs.
  • Use the XE currency conversion app to show you the conversion rate when you buy something.
  • Don't pay in USD. They probably won't take it, and if they do, you won't get a good conversion.
  • Always use the local currency, the Peso or Bolivian Bolivianos, if a merchant asks if you want to process your card in USD or Peso.
  • Cash is widely used, especially for small things like drinks. Keep small bills and coins for the bathroom.
  • If you leave a tip anywhere, round up. No need to tip out the standard 20%.
  • Make sure you use up all your coins before leaving the country, as you cannot exchange them back.

Financial Safety:

  • Be aware of your surroundings and avoid displaying large amounts of cash in public.
  • Split up your cash, cards, and important documents into different places (e.g., some in a wallet, some in a money belt, and some in your luggage).
  • Keep your wallet or purse close to your body, and never leave it unattended.
  • Use ATMs located in secure, well-lit areas and avoid those with suspicious-looking devices attached to them.
  • Check your credit card and bank statements regularly for any unauthorized charges or transactions.
  • Use credit cards for larger purchases as they offer better protection than debit cards.
  • Use a travel credit card that offers benefits such as no foreign transaction fees and travel insurance.
  • Notify your bank and credit card company of your travel plans to prevent them from flagging your purchases as suspicious and freezing your account.
  • Be cautious when using public Wi-Fi to avoid identity theft and fraud. Use a virtual private network (VPN) and avoid accessing sensitive information (e.g., bank accounts) on public Wi-Fi networks.

Personal Safety:

  • Be aware of your surroundings and stay alert.
  • Avoid carrying valuables or expensive jewelry.
  • Use a money belt or cross-body purse to keep essential items secure.
  • Avoid walking alone at night, especially in unlit areas.
  • Keep your wallet in a front pocket or money belt.
  • Use a cross-body purse with a secure zipper or buckle.
  • Be wary of strangers who approach.
  • Stay alert in crowded places, such as train stations and tourist attractions.
  • Register with the embassy or consulate in case of emergency.
  • Always keep emergency contact information with you.
  • Learn basic phrases in the local language, including how to ask for help.
  • Bolivia can experience political demonstrations, protests, and strikes that can disrupt travel.
  • Roadblocks are sometimes set up by protesters and this can disrupt public transport. Do not cross roadblocks.

Reviews

I went on the most fantastic hiking and yoga retreat in Sedona with Brian and Amy. Looking at the photos taken with our group, the trails hiked, the yoga sessions, and especially the food eaten, it's challenging to put in words a review that will ensure anyone considering going on a trip with Walker Wellness will have a magnificent time. I guess two words, no worries! No worries about anything! How do you get there? What do you wear? What will you be eating? What are the details of what you'll be doing? Do they give you enough time to hike if you are a slow hiker? Brian and Amy have thought of EVERYTHING. I did not need or want anything. Right down to the particular cream in my daily coffee. (Thank you, Amy!) And if, along the way, you would like something, a little Starbucks coffee stop and a little shopping, all good. Brian and Amy are there for you. This is not a must-stick to the schedule type of people. They are there to make sure you have a wonderful time in Sedona. Two words: NO WORRIES!

The trip to Senalala Safari Lodge was a daily wonder and outstanding experience. Every bush drive brought unexpected wildlife experiences. Lisa, our guide, had phenomenal knowledge of all the sites, sounds and tracks that we saw each day. Our accommodations were very comfortable, well maintained and staff members made all welcome. I especially like eating the delicious meals family style and getting to know other explorers. I will return!🦒🐘🐃🦓🦏

I recently returned from a Yoga/trekking retreat to Peru (October '24) with Cassie Paul. It was just wonderful. Cassie led this group with grace. I really appreciated and noticed how she frequently checked in with everyone to see how we all were doing and encouraged us daily. I would 100% recommend attending any retreat being led by Cassie. I hope to do this again someday.

Thank you for organizing our dream private tour to Madagascar! We knew we wanted to visit such a magical country but had no idea about logistics and how to get from one place to another. By working with Walker Wellness Retreats, we were able to see everything we wanted to see during the dates we needed. Everything was easy and made planning so much more simple (as it should be for vacation!).

We had a great time. Best trip ever from ease of booking to the flight home. Cassie Paul was the perfect team leader. All the excursions were top notch. The food was to die for. The accommodations were more than acceptable, and the Inka Trail from start to finish was spectacular. Thanks to everyone involved in the planning and organizing. We will be back!!!
