About your trip

Our long-time friends from the Moseten and Tsimane tribes are very excited to meet you. They have created an amazing itinerary of immersive experiences. You will see rare birds, follow jungle animal tracks, bathe in the river, ride in hand-carved canoes, and learn medicinal plant identification while on deep jungle treks. There will be myth-sharing, one-of-a-kind cultural exchanges, and so much more. You will revel in the savory and sweet slow food prepared from their forests on open flames, never forget the homemade cacao elixirs, and indulge in exotic fruits harvested fresh from the forest just feet from your rustic cabin. You will have the deep sensory experience of foraging, fishing, and feasting by day, culminating in deep rest under an enchanted night sky and a rainforest sensory sound bath to cherish in your memory for the rest of your life. The Amazon is where you get your grit on.

The spirit of these communities and the untouched beauty of nature converge to create a journey that resonates deep within the soul. We invite you now to this extraordinary adventure of self-discovery and cultural immersion: a journey that can change your life in ways that can change the world. May your vitality and connection to Pachamama be renewed where the Amazon revels and romps with the reality that a regenerative world is possible—for you and for everyone. Que Disfruten!

Your Organizers

Children of the Rainforest is a tax-exempt nonprofit organization rooted in two decades of relationships with the indigenous communities of the Pilón Lajas Biosphere Reserve in the Bolivian Amazon. We are excited to be in partnership with Journey with Steve & Juan, co-creating transformative experiences centered on the autonomy and aspirations of the Moseten and Tsimane tribes.

Group Leader

Steve Torneten has been leading Pilgrimages into South America for the past 12 years, guiding people to remote areas in the Amazon and Andes mountains. He specialize in off-the-beaten-path experiences that ground people in nature, offering them a fresh way to connect not only with the beauty of the planet but also with themselves.

Tornetens background is diverse, spanning from serving eight years as a helicopter pilot in the Marine Corps to establishing a successful real estate business. "After my time in the Marine Corps and a career in business, I began exploring human consciousness through meditation, yoga, and shamanic ceremonies. It was my first journey to the Amazon, however, that ultimately revealed the power of letting go of all the emotional and psycological contraints that prevent TRUE FREEDOM"

Your Guide

Juan Fernando Duran is an exceptional guide in South America with over 30 years of experience. His expertise spans South American history and wildlife, from the Galapagos Islands to the Andes mountains and Amazon rainforest. As a devoted husband and father, his passion for his country, nature preservation, and fostering bonds with indigenous groups shines through for our guests. His guiding isn't just about tourism; it's a journey that lets people authentically connect with the land, its inhabitants, and the spirit of nature itself.

Testimonials

"My trip into the Amazon was amazing! This trip is best for anyone with an open mind and heart, who is reasonably fit and healthy, and who savors immersion in nature. The guides were all incredible and professional."  Mary P

"This trip was not only a trip, it was a human adventure, a jungle discovery, a nature bath, an english and spanish class, a group coaching session, a wisdom inspiration, and a way to protect nature. I just loved it, one of the best things of my life."  Athena M

"Thank you for this amazing, transformative, authentic experience that allowed to meet with indigenous people in a very heart-felt way on the same eye-level."   Vanessa W

"My journey into the rainforest surpassed expectations! Far beyond the typical eco-tourism experience, the trip provided opportunities to be with and learn from indigenous peoples in a natural manner. Both the group leader and local guides were highly skilled and cared well for the group. The trip taught me much about the rainforest and its peoples, but also a great deal about myself."  Peter C

"A rich, intense, and awe-inspiring adventure into the jungle and into our hearts. The journey leader, Steve, and our interpreter, were trustworthy, kind, and highly capable. All of our accommodations and journeys were excellent. Best of all was the experience of being held as we swam in ancient waterfalls, connected with the locals, and experienced the deep wilderness. Life-changing!"  Joseph A

"First off I'll say the preparation of this journey was thoughtful..  They anticipate your needs, so you always feel fully supported in everything; bathroom comfort, food restrictions, physical and emotional needs. The complete unplug that you experience on this journey gives you tremendous clarity.  And then there's one more element....the difference you can make by taking time to bare witness to the lives of the indigenous tribes so you can truly hear and understand them.  Just sign up.  You won't be disappointed and you're in loving hands with Pachamama Alliance."   Debbie L

"This journey was superb with really amazing guides who supported and allowed a transformative spiritual experience to unfold individually and collectively. The itinerary was really beautifully curated as a journey in and of itself."  Anya W

"This was truly a once in a lifetime experience - I learned so much, felt so connected, and was pushed to have new perspectives and understanding of the world. I would go again in a heartbeat if I could!"  Sara H

"The journey was absolutely extraordinary. I’m still digesting all the powerful moments and focusing now on how I can contribute to protecting the planet and the indigenous people who protect the Amazon for all. The journey absolutely changed how I walk through the world."  Nicole C

"I knew this trip would be transformative, but couldn't have imagined the gifts of the Amazon and its people. I will be forever grateful for the container created for all of us to have incredible, life changing experiences."  Sara T.

"The Journey was a powerful experience of learning about different people, connecting with nature, and personal spiritual growth. I appreciated the structure as a partnership - learning from and supporting each other. The insights from other group members strengthened my learning and made it an enjoyable time together. I am glad I could bring my young adult daughters - it was a connecting experience for us and important for young people who will help our culture change to a new dream."  Diana H

"My Journey is hard to describe in words. The visitations, experiences and engagement we were part of were profound, beautiful and awe-inspiring on physical, emotional and spiritual levels. The trip was a finely woven tapestry created from a place of deep love and reverence for the human and nonhuman inhabitants of the forest. I am awakened and changed forever in ways that will continue to unfold over time. I feel the deepest respect for their work, vision and integrity." Andrea N

"I loved the experience and learnings I had with these docile distant brothers that I had the opportunity to embrace on this journey. The pure relationship that the Ashuar people have with the earth on the physical and spiritual plane, captivated me forever"  Ruth B

"I'm still in a suspended state of wonder. What I didn't anticipate was how this would be as much a self-exploration as it was an adventure into the forest. To be as warmly welcomed by the indigenous, take part in their ceremonies, learn first-hand about their culture and more deeply connect to nature is a gift that continues to unfold long after returning home. For anyone who's looking to disrupt a pattern in their lives, has a fascination about the forest or just needs to disconnect for a bit I couldn't recommend this trip more."   Andrew W

"The Self that I identified as “me”, that left for the Journey was not the sane Self that returned.  Amidst the stillness and silence of the jungle and welcoming spirit of our indigenous brothers and sisters, I discovered my Self, as a self rooted in being,  blissful and serene."  Mark F

"I was so impressed with the organization and care of the leaders and guides of the entire journey through the jungle. The care of all parties involved helped create a safe space to wholeheartedly experience the present moment. I remained in a state of presence for such a long period of time that returning back to society has been a challenge. I recommend this for anyone seeking to come face to face with the jaguar and smile."  Michael A

"The organization was exceptional, people were amazing, including group and the indigenous people.  One of the best experiences ever.  Very grateful."   Diana D

Day 3,4 & 5 image

Asuncion

After an early morning breakfast, we will be taxied down to the banks of the Bene River, meet up with our indigenous guide, load up our canoes then start our adventure upriver into the Bolivian Amazon.

After 3 hours on the Bene River, we will turn up the Quiquibey River for about 30 minutes to arrive at the Moseten Community of Asunción where we will spend the next two nights. After a formal greeting, we will settle into our accommodations and prepare to explore the surrounding area.

The Moseten in Asunción will share their recent discovery of buried artifacts including bones of people who were over 8’ tall. In the last couple of years, they decided to move their village to the top of a hill away from the flooding river and when they started digging in the ground, they discovered pottery, bones, jewelry, and other artifacts that tell the story of two very ancient civilizations.

During our time there we will learn more from their stories, ceremonies, and discoveries.

Day 6 & 7

After breakfast, we will say our farewells and continue upriver to the community of Corte where we will be greeted by the Tismane people. This is a very unique community and culture. Here part of their culture has been lost but they are eager to share with us who they are and how they live in the Amazon. We will spend one night here, sharing and learning from our host about what it means to live as a Tismane. They have many stories of their past and a couple of surprises for us.

After breakfast, we will continue our journey for another 3  to 4 hours up the Quiquibey River followed by a jaunt up the San Luis River to the small village of San Luis Grande. There we will be greeted by smiles and hugs from our Moseten family. When you arrive, you are family. Prepare for a simple and friendly way of life deep in the Amazon.

After a formal greeting ceremony, we will settle into our hut and then prepare for an adventurous 3 nights of experiencing the wonders of the Amazon. We will explore lagoons, fish for piranhas, observe remote clay licks, expedition to a remote waterfall, search for carvings and writing of ancient cultures in the rocks of the nearby cliffs, and experience the magic and wonder of this remote Amazon oasis.

We will have plenty of time to hear stories and myths from our host around a campfire, eat fresh fish and food from their garden, learn the skill of hunting with a bow & arrow, and much more.
