This day trip offers an enjoyable day for garden lovers, art lovers, history lovers and even those who love nature and wildlife. Brookgreen Gardens is America’s first public sculpture garden, established by wealthy Industrialist, Archer Huntington and his acclaimed sculptor wife, Anna Hyatt Huntington. Located on the site of former rice plantations, Brookgreen melds the sculpture with a premier garden, a highly accredited zoo of native wildlife and a National Historic Landmark. The day begins with a guided tour with narrative about the history, the sculpture and the horticulture. Following the tour, there is time to enjoy lunch on your own at either the full service Harvest Resturant (reservations recommended) or the casual dining choices of the Courtyard Cafe or Old Kitchen. You won't want to miss the fabulous herb garden at the Old Kitchen! Options after lunch are bountiful. Visit the zoo for an education about native animals such as Bald Eagles, River Otters, Owls and Egrets. Enjoy the daily "Whispering Wings Butterfly Experience". Become moved by the stories of the enslaved people who worked the rice plantations along the LowCountry Audio Tour Trail. Cruise the rice field creeks in a pontoon boat tour for interpretation of the plantation life and perhaps sightings of wildlife OR simply return to the sculpture garden for more in depth viewing of the sculpture and blooms. There is so much to see and enjoy during this day trip! Don't forget your camera!
This trip is best suited for people comfortable with walking and standing on flat surfaces for at least an hour.
