Your adventure begins from Sofia, where the city’s morning bustle slowly fades as you start your ride eastward, following the curves of the mighty Balkan mountain range. With the wind in your face and the hum of the engine beneath you, the Central Balkan unfolds like a living postcard—villages nestle into the hills, and open fields whisper stories of khans, revolutionaries, and ancient Thracians. Your first major destination is as surreal as it is iconic: the Buzludzha Monument. Perched like a forgotten spacecraft atop a mountain peak, this monumental relic of Bulgaria’s communist past is unlike anything else in the world. Once a meeting hall for the Bulgarian Communist Party, Buzludzha is now a decaying giant, frozen in time. Its brutalist architecture, enormous size, and eerie silence leave every visitor awestruck. Although closed to the public, its exterior alone is enough to stir the imagination, and the photos you’ll take here will be among the most dramatic of your entire trip.
After exploring Buzludzha, the road leads you through the sun-drenched fields of the Thracian Plain and into the city of Stara Zagora. Known for its perfectly preserved Roman street grid and its tenacity to rise from the ashes of history, Stara Zagora makes for an excellent coffee break. Enjoy a strong Bulgarian espresso in one of its cozy cafés and soak in the unique vibe of a place where antiquity and modernity coexist effortlessly. The road then gently winds toward the south, and by afternoon, you arrive in Plovdiv—the cultural heart of Bulgaria and one of the oldest living cities in Europe. As you ride into town, the layered history of Plovdiv becomes immediately visible: from ancient Roman ruins to ornate 19th-century houses, the entire city feels like an open-air museum. You’ll explore highlights like the Roman Theatre, the ancient fortress remains on Nebet Tepe, and the cobbled streets of the Old Town that echo with centuries of stories.
As evening falls, Plovdiv transforms. You’ll dive into the vibrant energy of Kapana—an artsy district teeming with life, music, craft beer, and buzzing conversations. Once an artisans’ quarter, Kapana is now the beating bohemian heart of the city, where tradition meets trend. Dinner here is a delight, and whether you choose traditional Bulgarian dishes like kavarma and grilled lamb or opt for modern fusion cuisine, your taste buds are in for a ride of their own. And don’t be surprised if a friendly local insists you try a glass of rakia—it’s not just a drink, it’s a ritual. Your day ends with a restful night in the historic center of Plovdiv, where your boutique hotel offers the perfect blend of charm and comfort. You’ll fall asleep surrounded by history, already dreaming of the road ahead.
Riding time for the day: approximately 5 hours / ~350 km.
Accommodation: 3* hotel in the Old part of Plovdiv
After breakfast, our second day begins with a new and thrilling adventure as we leave the ancient city behind and dive straight into the mystical embrace of the Rhodope Mountains. The road starts to weave and climb almost immediately, offering breathtaking views at every turn, and the feeling that you are entering another world. A short ride brings us to the sacred grounds of Bachkovo Monastery, the second-largest monastery in Bulgaria and one of its most revered. Founded in 1083, this spiritual fortress has survived invasions, fires, and the tides of empires. As you step through its ancient gates, the air grows thick with incense and centuries of devotion. Here, travelers will learn not only about the monastery’s medieval roots but also about the difficult and heroic role Bulgaria played during the dark days of the Second World War. Amidst the frescoes and quiet courtyards, stories of courage and survival will come alive, making Bachkovo a deeply moving experience. After leaving the monastery behind, the ride continues to unravel the hidden beauty of the Rhodopes. You’ll pass through a tapestry of charming villages. Somewhere along this winding path, we will stop for a traditional Rhodope lunch, where the food is as rich as the scenery. Expect dishes like "patatnik" (a hearty potato pie), grilled lamb, fresh mountain herbs, and creamy yogurt—all served with the warmth and hospitality that the Rhodopeans are famous for. Recharged but determined to experience even more, we continue riding until the day stretches us to our limits. When the energy finally begins to wane, we will reach our cozy hotel, nestled amidst the tranquility of the mountains. A hearty dinner awaits, along with the promise of soft beds and a deep, peaceful rest under the starry Rhodope sky. Tomorrow, new countries and new adventures await.
Riding time for the day: approximately 4 hours / ~150 km.
Accommodation: 3* hotel in Trigrad.
The third day of our adventure begins with the fresh scent of mountain air still clinging to our jackets and the promise of a new country on the horizon. We saddle up and continue our journey through the endless folds of the Rhodope Mountains. When we cross the border, the scenery will subtly change. We will start seeing more olive groves, more Mediterranean villages and towns. We ride through quiet backroads and hidden valleys, feeling the pulse of both nature and history with every turn of the wheels.
Our main goal for the day is to reach the sparkling jewel of northern Greece—Kavala, an ancient harbor town that seems to have sprung straight from a dream. Riding into Kavala feels like arriving at the edge of two worlds: the Mediterranean breeze replaces the mountain chill, the blue of the Aegean Sea stretches endlessly ahead, and the skyline is crowned by an old Byzantine fortress watching over the port. After settling into our hotel, the afternoon invites us to wander through Kavala’s historic heart. Narrow cobbled streets, colorful houses clinging to the hillside, and fishermen mending their nets by the docks create a scene so picturesque, it feels timeless.
As the sun dips lower, painting the marina in golden hues, we’ll gather for a well-deserved dinner by the waterfront. Fresh seafood, the scent of oregano and lemon, the gentle clink of glasses—this is the perfect ending to a day that blends mountain adventure with seaside charm. With the soft murmur of the Aegean in the background and the stars beginning to twinkle overhead, we let the Mediterranean night embrace us, dreaming already of the roads that tomorrow will reveal.
Riding time for the day: approximately 5 hours / ~345 km.
Accommodation: 3* hotel in Kavala, Greece.
After a hearty breakfast and a final glimpse of Kavala’s beautiful harbor, we rev up the engines and set off westward, riding along the glittering shoreline. The road hugs the sea, offering sweeping views of endless blue waters on one side and rolling green hills on the other. The ride feels almost effortless, a graceful dance between land and sea, as the salty breeze and the songs of cicadas accompany our journey.
Before long, we reach the northern part of Halkidiki, the famous semi-island known for its fingers of land reaching into the Aegean. The relaxed rhythm of the day, the play of light on the water, and the quiet beauty of Halkidiki make this ride one of the most peaceful and memorable moments of the journey.
In the afternoon, we will roll into one of the most important cities not just in Greece, but in the entire Mediterranean. Thessaloniki is a place where history wears many faces—Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, and modern Greek—all layered seamlessly together. After settling into our centrally located hotel, we step out to explore this remarkable city. From the ancient Rotunda and the Arch of Galerius to the whitewashed beauty of the famous White Tower by the waterfront, every street and square tells a story of emperors, traders, saints, and dreamers. Yet Thessaloniki is not only about its past; its bustling boulevards, lively cafés, colorful markets, and vibrant nightlife breathe youthful energy into its ancient bones.
Riding time for the day: approximately 4 hours / 260 km.
Accommodation: 3* hotel in Thessaloniki.
This day begins with a journey deep into the echoes of ancient greatness, as we leave Thessaloniki behind and head toward the heartlands of the Ancient Macedonians. Today is dedicated to exploring the legacy of a dynasty that shaped the course of history—the house of Philip II, his queen Olympia, and their legendary son, Alexander the Great. Riding through the fertile plains of Macedonia, we arrive at the royal burial site of Philip II, father of Alexander, whose life and death left an indelible mark on the ancient world. Stepping into the tumulus at Vergina, we are transported back over two millennia, surrounded by the golden treasures and solemn majesty of a once-mighty king. Here, amidst the artifacts and the silent tombs, the grandeur and human drama of one of history’s greatest families come alive.
After this powerful encounter with antiquity, we continue our journey westward, where new borders await. We cross into the modern country of North Macedonia, where the landscapes shift but the sense of timelessness remains. Twisting roads lead us through valleys and hills until we reach the shimmering shores of Ohrid Lake, one of Europe's oldest and deepest lakes, cradled between mountains like a sapphire in a green velvet crown.
Our destination is the enchanting city of Ohrid, a cultural gem and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, history breathes from every stone, from the medieval fortress overlooking the town to the ancient churches that dot the hillsides. The atmosphere is a perfect blend of the sacred and the serene, and as we stroll through its cobbled streets, the beauty of the lake merges with the soulful spirit of the town. We’ll enjoy a peaceful evening here, savoring a lakeside dinner as the sunset casts golden reflections over the water. Overnight, we will be nestled in the historical heart of Ohrid, surrounded by views and stories that stretch across centuries.
Riding time for the day: approximately 4 hours / ~280km.
Accommodation: 3* hotel in the old part of Ohrid.
After breakfast in the charming heart of Ohrid, we gear up and continue our journey northward, leaving the peaceful shores behind as we head deeper into the Balkans. The road climbs steadily, offering sweeping views of untouched landscapes, ancient villages, and the timeless beauty of the mountains.
Before long, we cross another frontier and enter Kosovo, a land where history, resilience, and vibrant culture meet at every turn. Our destination today is the beautiful city of Prizren, often called the jewel of Kosovo. Nestled at the foot of the Sharr Mountains and straddling the banks of the Bistrica River, Prizren is a living museum of medieval churches, Ottoman mosques, elegant stone bridges, and traditional houses with red-tiled roofs.
The spirit of Prizren is both old and young, where ancient traditions blend effortlessly with a lively and welcoming atmosphere. We’ll have the afternoon to explore its narrow lanes, sip coffee in cozy cafés, and absorb the energy of a city that has seen centuries of change yet remains timelessly charming. As evening falls, we’ll enjoy a traditional dinner in the heart of Prizren, surrounded by the sounds of laughter, clinking glasses, and the gentle murmur of the river. Tonight, we will overnight in this historic city, feeling once again connected to the endless stories that the Balkans so generously offer.
Riding time for the day: approximately 5 hours / ~290km.
Accommodation: 3* hotel in Prizren.
After a hearty breakfast, we set off once more, our engines humming as we ride southward. Today, we leave Kosovo behind and re-enter North Macedonia, drawn by the call of one of the most fascinating and curious cities in the Balkans—its capital, Skopje. The road takes us through rolling hills and open valleys, the scenery shifting from rugged peaks to wide, sunlit plains as we approach this unique and lively metropolis.
Arriving in Skopje feels like stepping into a dream stitched together from a thousand different inspirations. A city reborn after a devastating earthquake in 1963, Skopje today presents a spectacle like no other: grandiose statues tower above baroque-style facades, wide boulevards stretch alongside ancient Ottoman bazaars, and brutalist concrete blends strangely yet somehow charmingly with glittering new monuments. Skopje is a city of contrasts and surprises, where a medieval fortress overlooks futuristic fountains, and the birthplace of Mother Teresa offers a quiet reflection amid the lively streets. We will overnight in its center to get as much experience as possible of this unique place.
Riding time for the day: approximately 3 hours / ~150km.
Accommodation: 3* hotel in the historical part of Skopje.
With the spirit of the Balkans alive in our hearts and countless memories already packed into our saddlebags, we mount our bikes for the last stretch of this incredible adventure. The road eastward beckons, leading us back toward Bulgaria, but not before we make one more unforgettable stop. Riding through the gently undulating landscapes of North Macedonia, we soon reach the Osogovo Mountains, where hidden among dense forests lies the Osogovo Monastery—one of the most revered spiritual sanctuaries in the country. After our visit, we continue our ride, crossing the border back into Bulgaria. The route leads us through green valleys and familiar mountains, and the closer we get to Sofia, the more the sense of completion grows, along with the realization of just how much we have seen, learned, and felt along the way. By the afternoon, we roll back into the capital, bringing our incredible eight-day journey full circle.
When we reach the city, we will bring the bikes for a deserved rest in the garage. We will assist you in reaching your hotel or airport after the tour. Please note that the overnight stay in Sofia is not included in the price.
