About this trip

SAN PABLO CAPE & ROLITO, 2 passangers. Total price 294 US dollars

Our treasure hunters John and Martha immersed themselves in this voyage to discover some of the unique pearls buried in this land. In this exclusive experience our couple discover a diverse geography and the labors of the people in Tierra del Fuego.

Very early in the morning, our Tierra Turismo Team left Ushuaia with our guests following National Route 3 and crossing The Andes through the Garibaldi Pass. Standing at 450 meters above sea level, this was one of the most interesting points of the trip. They had traveled about 60 kilometers when Lake Escondido surprised us in the middle of the high rocky walls. As they continues, they observed the ecosystem gradually transforming from the woods to the steppe at the northern part of the island, a region known for breeding the best lambs in the world.

We stopped by the little town of Tolhuin, heart of the island, to visit La Unión Bakery. This is a traditional meeting point for both locals and visitors and it is part of the charm of this village. Here John and Martha took a delicious coffee break among the aroma of pastries and the perfume of the hot chocolate.

By midday we came to the Provincial Route “A”, where we took a gravel road heading toward the Atlantic Ocean and the San Pablo Cape. At this point, we hiked up to an isolated mountain with an abandoned lighthouse at the end. Martha was captivated by this extraordinary solitary scene.

Climbing to the top of this beacon, our guests could appreciate The Desdemona, an abandoned ship for almost 40 years ago which invites us to sail through time. It happened on a cold winter morning in 1983; when this enormous craft ran aground on the shores of the Argentine Sea. Long ago it carried many different cargoes, this time it was hundreds of cement bags that fell, resting like petrified mummies.

After exploring this mysterious giant, we visited the Estancia Rolito. This lovely ranch, that keeps the spirit of a family business based on sheep farming tradition, is the first ranch to open its gates to rural tourism. It is here that we paused for a delightful tea with home-made cakes, cookies and marmalades.

Our travelers also took some time to walk around part of the gorgeous 500-hectare ancient lenga forest, taking thick green pathways with the smell of wild mint and the chirping of birds dwelling in the foliage. They visited the shearing shed, where there were already some wool bales from the first shearing.

As the sun started to set, we made the last stop in a local micro-brewery in Tolhuin. There we learned about the craft beer production and of course, we tasted its different varieties directly from its.

Back in 2003 we did these excursions with a different agency. After 20 years we went back with my son his new family and his 2 boys ages 4 & 7. The boys love cars and SUV’s and we all love the Land Rover’s Defenders. So when I saw that we could still do the same off road excursion to the wild Tierra del Fuego on the Defenders, I booked this 4X4 excursion. We all enjoyed it to the max. It was an experience to never forget. We were 5 adults and 2 children so we were divided in 2 Defenders. Both drivers were excellent and the narrative about the region’s geography and history was of academic level. Due to recent wild fires in the region we could not do the ‘asado a la parrilla’ at the refuge. So they took us to a ‘Posada.’ the food was very good and the staff very friendly. We all enjoyed the walk by the 2 lakes, Fagnano y Escondido. Late-morning we had a morning snack with regional pastries and coffee or tea in the wilderness. Unfortunately due to bad weather -strong winds- we could not get on the canoes, but the trip was well worthy. The next day we went to the Penguin's Island. What an experience for the little ones! The penguins let us get quite close to them. We remained on the island close to an hour. The tour guide was very knowledgeable about he lives and biology of the fauna. We also saw 2 seals close to shore and number of local birds including the Cauquenes. What an experience!!!! I was very fortunate to have been able to bring my family to this exclusive site on earth.

I had such a great time with the TiERRA team! They were incredibly helpful and responsive through the booking and planning and once I was in Ushuaia. The tours are great - you get to see a true local’s view of this beautiful part of the world. The guides are friendly and very knowledgeable, and these tours are thoughtfully designed. Many thanks to Aye, Christian, and Tommy for such a great experience! Would highly recommend!

Mateus was an amazing guide. Knowledgeable and so much fun. The experiences were fabulous and he had lots of knowledge. Food was excellent except for Kaiken Inn. Dinner on the second night was not edible but no one seemed to care. The lunch on the last day with Diane was fabulous. An absolute must and a great way to end the tour. Thank you for a wonderful time!
