Caiman Eco-Lodge is at one of the best spots in the reserve, really close to  the Laguna Grande and reachable by canoe all year long, not depending  on the season. The Lodge accommodates up to 40 people in three  individual guest huts; each hut has 2 – 4 double or triple bedrooms (as  required)  each with its own private bathroom and shower. There is also a  relaxing area, hammocks and an amazing tower (3 floors are fit with  triple rooms as those mentioned above) with a great view over the lagoon  and the jungle from the 7th top floor. All our guests are assisted by  an accredited naturalist guide and licensed canoe driver.

About this trip

It was an excellent day trip with a variety of activities.  Really enjoyed the hummingbird garden and the waterfalls.  My only recommendation would be to tell guests to bring bug spray as I got many bug bites which were quite sore for several days.

I’m not sure where to start. I’m a single mom traveling with my 3 teenagers across Ecuador, including Galápagos. That in itself is an undertaking. Well, CARPEdm and Tucan lodge made this a super awesome and relaxing experience! The 4 days in the jungle at the Tucan lodge was our favorite part of the 3 week vacation by far! Even though the bus ride and transit to the bridge was exhausting, we were rewarded with the magic of the Cuyabeno jungle immediately, as soon as we stepped foot into the motorized canoe!! Our guide Fausto and our driver Walter were the best!!! Both have Eagle vision and spotted wildlife that was so camouflaged, we never would’ve spotted ourselves! The lodge was magical and beautiful, the kitchen staff went above and beyond and the meals were OUT OF THIS WORLD amazing! My kids can’t stop talking about how good the food was! The tours were super organized and everything went flawless, from the jungle excursions to the canoe rides, indigenous village visit, night walks to making chocolate and coffee!! I can’t state enough how amazing our guide Fausto was. He is full of knowledge and knows where and how to find the animals! We saw 5 different species of monkeys, pink dolphins, caymans, sloths(!!!), anacondas, boa constrictors, tarantulas, banana spiders, Tucans, a harpy eagle(!!!) and so much more!! Walter made us feel safe on the water, even at night! The beds were super comfortable and the showers were (almost) always hot:)). There isn’t a thing I would change about this experience and CARPEDIEM was the nicest and most helpful travel agency to deal with. I was worried that we were on the wrong bus, and WhatsApp’d them at midnight and they responded back immediately to ease my mind! Highly recommend! Like I said, 100% our favorite 4 days of the entire 3 week vacation in beautiful Ecuador! I would go back in a heartbeat (and probably will)!! I’m pretty sure me and my kids left a piece of our hearts at Tucan lodge forever!!!

Great one day excursion!  Our guide was very interesting and knowledgeable so we enjoyed our conversations and the opportunity to learn about life in Ecuador.  Otavalo was just ok ~ many vendors selling the same items that did not look handmade.  Despite this, we enjoyed the day getting out of Quito, having lunch in Otavalo and stopping at another small shop that did sell handmade items!

CARPEdM helped me a lot with the reservation and were superb to deal with. All of the staff I had contact with were professional, knowledgeable, and had a great understanding of the various tours and options. They were also very flexible in adapting everything for my last-minute requirements.

I experienced some difficulties at the lodge itself, and CARPEdM were excellent in resolving them; they took ownership of the problems, fully understood them, and did everything in their power to ensure a positive outcome. Actually going above and beyond. 

I highly recommend CARPEdM in quito. (They are very easy to find, right next to the basilica). I will definitely be using this tour operator again.

Honestly there is nothing to improve. Our stay at Cuyabeno Tucan Lodge was amazing. Starting from the easy, fast and helpful contact with Dorian from CarpeDM, goin' on with the beautiful lodge with all its facilities (good food, beautiful outside area, beautiful huts, e. g.) and especially our guide Carlos who really let you feel that he is passionated about the jungle of Cuyabeno.

What a wonderful trip it was! The guide was fabulous and the accommodation was perfect. I never missed wifi because all the things we could do. The trips were perfect, the boats great and we even took a swim. 
I can recommend this trip to everybody. You see a lot of animals, good explonations from the guide and even a hot shower.

Genuinely the best thing I have done in South America. The food was good and the atmosphere really social and friendly.the guides were a fountain of knowledge and their enthusiasm for conservation really rubs off on you. The wildlife was fantastic. Only negative was the bus drivers to and from the lodge kept falling asleep, genuinely one of the most scary bus trips I've had travelling ever.

During our stay at Tucan Lodge the activity’s were well organized. Unfortunately the return transport was a big mess. No one knew which bus we had to take or what time the bus would leave. Because the seats are not that comfortable, most people tried to get on the bus as soon as possible which causes a chaotic situation. If you have the back seat you just have a terrible trip ahead of you because you have to sit up straight. I would recommend to get a more appropriate bus for a journey that takes this long and a better service to organize the transport. It was not worth the $30 at all.

Marco was excellent! He was our guide and the whole day was just so excellent! He was great at explaining stops, the history of quito, and stopping for us to get food and drinks. I think ask for marco! He made the day for us! Mindo is beautiful and there are many things you can do.

With our guide Alirio it was great to do this tous after 1 wedk in Galapagos.
Aliriogave us a big lesson about Ecuador and we could see many things in just one day.
Be careful with the altitude.
The experience in Mitad del Mundo was very interesting. Don’t forget to go to the private museum full of experiences.

Don’t miss Quilotoa if you come to Ecuador. Wonderful views of the lagoon inside the crater. Walk along thr rim of Quilotoa vulcan and see so nice flowers at that altitude.
Walk down to the crater and think if you are strong enough to come up.
Estuardo was a wonderful guide.
The landscape around Quilotoa is like naif paintings.
Estuardo was our guide snd we had a lot of fun with him.

I will never forget the hummingbirds very early in the morning as well as tucanos, a lot of small birds, butterflies and. Flowers.
I will never forget the chocolate tour at “Maya chocolate “ with Erica and her family. I recommend this tour.
Enjoy the rivers and forests. Eat a very good quinoa soup and forget the cities. Here’s the paradise!j
We did thetour with Stéphania as a guide. She was great!

Stephanie is a great guide. She knows a lot about birds, plants and society, as she is also a lawyer. 
Otavalo is a good place to go shopping. We missed the Saturday market but you coul also shop on a week day.
The mountains around the region are very nice, as well as Saint Paulo,s lake snd the volcans and craters not do far from Otovalo.
What a nice grilled trout we had for lunch!

We really loved the trekking to the refuge with the snow and the great views. We saw 2 wolfs on the way and how good was the hot chocolate we had at the top!

Estuardo, our guide, was a great mountain guide and we were lucky to have him in Quilotoa and Cotapaxi. He’s a young but very responsible and he helps everyone that has difficulties. Thanks to him!

A wonderful time to relax after 17 days in Ecuador. The guide was great, the environment with the mountains was perfect. We all had a great day! We also loved the river trout as well as the small trekking around the pools. We advise other tourists not to miss Papallacta.

We had a great time! Wonderful people, delicious food and comfortable accommodation. We absolutely loved swimming in the lagoon and seeing all the different animals and insects in their natural habitats. Thanks so much for this brilliant experience!

We had a really good experience with CarpeDiem and Caiman Lodge. The accommodation was comfortable and the food was good. The Lodge provided boots and waterproof ponchos. Adonis, the main guide, was extremely kind and knowledgeable. He and the assistant guide Jonathon taught us a lot and made everyone feel very safe and welcome. The motor canoe drivers were careful and efficient and all the lodge staff were friendly and helpful. We enjoyed sunset boat trips, swims in the lagoon, evening hunts for caiman, jungle walks, an evening walk, and a visit to the Siona community. When we had a moment to spare we went to the top of the tower to birdwatch and look at the view. The others in our small group were much younger than us, and they were delightful. It was a very enjoyable four days. Boating on the lagoon at night was magical.

We booked through CarpeDiem, who were extremely efficient and responsive both for the booking and during the trip. I sent a message to the company when the bus did not arrive to take us to Lago Agrio and even though it was almost midnight I got a response immediately.

The bus ride from Quito to Lago Agrio was a great price, but very long, partly due to a major route being washed away. If I was to do the trip again I might try to fly this part.

Trip was exhilarating and challenging and doing it gave me a great sense of achievement. The company made it easy to book with pick up and drop off. Their suggestions to prepare were perfect.

We had the good fortune to have Stui as our guide today. Stui not only made the trip enjoyable with his extensive knowledge of the area, and it’s customs, he went above and beyond to be ever present as we hiked up to the base camp on Cotopaxi. As we are an older couple it took us a bit more time at such a high altitude, Stui, encouraged us all the way and exhibited an immense amount of patience. 
He also was able to customize the trip a bit, to fit our needs. 
I would highly recommend this trip to anyone wishing to be up close to the active volcano.

Great tour guide. We booked this last minute and pick up was just down the road from our airbnb. 

Bring warm clothes since you're going up the volcano. It gets cold even when the sun is out. The lunch stop before climbing the mountain has a stand where you can buy reasonably priced toques and sweaters.

Alejandro was our tour guide. Great guy, recommends bringing your ex for human sacrifice haha 😄 

The summit was off limits due to the recent volcano activities but we were able to go up to Base Camp where we had a little coffee/snack break. 

Afterwards we had a short bike tour. It was nice. Highly recommended 👌

Very knowledgeable guide on the area, plants, birds along with providing some excellent background history as to every place we visited.  The stops along the way were well timed so that we were able to pack in quite a bit of places but still have plenty of time at the open air market in Otavalo.  Good day all the way around

The guide was wonderful.  A beautiful area to visit along with plenty of time to take in the different activities throughout the day.  She was very helpful in providing background information on the areas visited.  Just an overall enjoyable day and nice to see areas outside of the Capital city.

We had a wonderful trip, our guides were very conscientious. They took us to the Pululahua crater early in the morning before the clouds moved in.  The Middle of the World experience was exceptional. Definitely worth it. 

Diego was a fabulous guide.  He was very personable and full of information.  He drove us to the Pululahua crater, the Mitad del Mundo, and the Teleferico.  All day long he was considerate, friendly, and very helpful.  He answered all our questions about these places, about Quito, about Ecuador's economy, and various other things in rich detail and in perfect English.  We were absolutely delighted with the whole experience.

We travelled as a couple and booked a private tour to Mindo(private as we had a particular day that we could do a tour, but the group tour for Mindo wasn't scheduled on this day). Have a private tour actually allowed us to choose the activities that we wanted to do. Our guide Marco was incredibly knowledgable and a very nice and interesting person, that gave something extra to our day, giving us a local's perspective.
In the end, we chose to do a canopy tour (10-line zipline tour), tubing and a visit to see hummingbirds. 
The canopy tour was good, albeit a little rushed. Our zipline guide was very informative about the local flora and fauna, pointing out various orchid species along the way.
The tubing was fun - the water was a bit low, but we still managed our 1km of tubing down the river. Quite refreshing after ziplining!
The last stop was recommended by our guide Marco; we asked what he recommended, and suggested a place with hummingbirds, but on the way back to Quito. We did this, visiting a family owned property-turned reserve and couldn't stop smiling with all the little hummingbirds flitting about. They also grow coffee and coffee plants for farmers on the property, so sampled some coffee and got a small bag as a souvenir.
Thank you to CarpeDM tours for arranging this tour; they tried to advertise the tour to get a group rate, but no one else signed up. The prices are competitive, service, and communication all excellent.
