Our tour begins at the train station in St. Cloud,
Thursday morning just after midnight., where we meet our
traveling family for our exciting tour to the Canadian
Rockies. Shortly after midnight we climb aboard and
enjoy all the amenities of Amtrak’s comfortable reclining
seats, a spacious lounge car to enjoy socializing and
cocktails, dining car, not to mention the panoramic views
in relaxing comfort. As we travel west, through North
Dakota and into Montana, we pass by horse and cattle
ranches and Indian reservations heading deep into the
Rocky Mountains. Approximate travel time is 22 hours.
Following our 10:00 p.m. arrival into Whitefish, Montana
we check into the Super 8 in Kalispell, Montana.
Today we board our deluxe motorcoach and meet our
local driver to see how geological processes have
formed and sculptured more than 50 glaciers and
mountains that tower 9,000 feet above 200 lakes which
comprise this terrain. Entering Glacier National Park will
leave you breathless with its Alpine beauty. Then by
special mini bus, also known as the historic Red
Jammers, we travel the spectacular “Going to the Sun
Highway”, acclaimed as one of the most outstanding
scenic roadways in the world. The 52 mile route
traverses through Logan’s Pass, across the continental
divide, and affords magnificent views of many glaciers.
By mid-afternoon, we arrive in Waterton Lakes National
Park. After a day of beautiful scenery, we check into the Bayshore
Inn and our evening is free to explore the charming and
quaint Waterton Village.
Our day begins by traveling the majestic beauty of
BANFF NATIONAL PARK, Canada’s oldest park. We have a comfort stop at the historic Bar U Ranch, where we can visit their unique gift shop and grab a snack. We continue to Banff, where we enjoy an included lunch at the famous FAIRMONT
BANFF SPRINGS HOTEL, truly a landmark, known as Canada's "Castle in the Rockies!" After lunch, we have time for pictures and to explore the Chateau before we have a very short drive to the Banff Gondola. This is the NUMBER ONE rated attraction in Banff! We soar the 2,292 feet in 8 minutes to the summit of Sulfur Mountain and enjoy breathtaking views. Following the gondola, we check into our hotel for a 2-night stay, at the newly renovated High Country Inn, where our luggage is waiting for us already in our room! Our evening is free to enjoy the downtown area of Banff!
Today we travel North America’s most scenic drive, the Columbia Icefield Parkway. Majestic mountains along with its variety of lakes make up the characteristics of
Jasper National Park that contains 4,200 square miles of breathtaking beauty. Next we board a special snow coach that takes us on an amazing journey to the top of
the Athabasca Glacier. Here we see how powerful forces of ancient water and ice continues to shape the Rocky Mountains. We make a stop at the beautiful and breathtaking Lake Louise, where we enjoy time to explore and take photos of this vivid turquoise lake. Your evening is free to enjoy dinner and shopping in Banff (Sleep Well).
This morning we check out of our hotel and travel west through British Columbia to the Bavarian Village of Radium Hot Springs, where we make a comfort stop at a local bakery/convenient store and the Radium Vistor Center. Our scenic drive brings us to Cranbrook, British Columbia, where we tour the History Centre, formerly known as the Canadian Museum of Rail Travel. This historic train station has a collection of vintage rail cars and exhibits of Canadian trains and the history of the railroad in Canada. What a fitting attraction to visit before we board our Amtrak back home in a day! We also enjoy an included box lunch at the train station. This afternoon, we cross the border back into Montana, arriving back at the Super 8 in Kalispell, Montana where our evening is free to enjoy dinner on our own, pack and get ready for our train ride back home.
Today we have an early checkout, as the train departs from the Whitefish Amtrak Station at 7:30 a.m. We spend a relaxing day on the train, enjoying the scenery and visiting, while enjoying all the amenities of Amtrak.
We enjoy quiet time on the train at night until our early morning arrival to the St. Cloud Amtrak Station at 6:32 a.m. where we collect our belongings and luggage and say goodbye to our fellow travelers.
