When we say this is one of the world’s 3 best destinations for astronomy tourism, you know we are actually pledging, promising, you something. We are talking about the cleanest, clearest skies in Europe – those spotless azure deep blue skies while day! Canary Islands, an Atlantic territory of Spain, an archipelago off the coast of north-western Africa, is a group of 7 main islands, and other islets. Claimed to have one of the world’s best climate, people also visit Canaries exclusively for the night skies – a privilege not every place in the world has.
The night skies are as pristine as it would be 500 years ago, as navigators saw from the middle of their sea-faring voyages. The skies here in these mountain tops are so pitch dark that you can see the ground feebly after it being illuminated by just the light from the stars above! The Milky-Way band here looks like a solid object hung onto the fabric of the sky. Stars are in so innumerable numbers that the mind feels dizzying and emotional seeing those many pin-pricks like stars. Celestial objects to the eye seen with even a small telescope are rendered nearly photographic-like. Countless stars in the sky in a location like this will serve to be an ultimate experience an aspiring astronomy enthusiast – you! – could ever expect; for astronomy is not a term or act of this terrestrial order. If you hadn’t noted, we will be observing from an altitude of 2400 meters; you will be viewing the skies above a "sea of clouds". The only rival to Canary Islands has been Mauna Kea in Hawaii, which houses the world’s largest observatory, Keck.
Our tour resides in the main islands of Tenerife and La Palma. Oh, by the way, our tour will coincide with one of the year's best meteor showers, the Leonids, peaking during the night of November 17 and the dawn of November 18. Together with those immaculate night skies, these 'dashing bullets' with hit you with your own "oohs" & "aahs"!
With the support of UNESCO, the Institute of Astrophysics (IAC) in Tenerife created a “Starlight Foundation” and a “Starlight Initiative”, devoted to keeping night skies dark. They have been certifying “Starlight Reserves” around the world – Canary Islands being one of their darkest spots. Such black nights and clear skies have beckoned astronomers to install some of the world’s most powerful telescopes, such as the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory, housing one of the world’s largest optical telescopes, on La Palma Island. Day guided tours that include an overview of the Observatory will also allow visitors to see the interior of one of the professional telescopes at the Observatory such as: Gran Telescopio de Canarias, William Herschel Telescope, Telescopio Nazionale Galileo. Seeing a dome rotate and a telescope maneuver in such a large observatory is like seeing unearthly monstrous objects move. This day tour will additionally grant you insights into the lives of professional astronomers, stories about the cutting-edge researches on-going to understand our Universe; the exotic developmental work you find only in newspapers, books, internet and television programs. Be part of the research process in-person. By night we will view the heavens with other amateur astronomers’ telescopes, like you had never cognized; it will serve a thundering inspiration not to be forgotten for years & years ahead.
