It’s no surprise that the Cape Peninsula remains one of the most visited parts of the African continent year after year – it’s not just the splendor of the sharp shard of rock that thrusts out into the Atlantic Ocean, or the wonders of the Cape Point Nature Reserve but also the myriad sea-side towns and villages, sensational wine estates and slow-living pace that makes this a destination to return to again and again.

We suggest spending time at the beautiful and historic small-scale wine estate of Buitenverwachting in Constantia and then heading south to the coast to see Capetonians of all shapes and sizes at play on Muizenberg Beach. This is the start of the False Bay coastline, a wonderful collection of five pretty seaside towns, connected by a rickety railway line, which is often dubbed the African Cinque Terre.

You’ll descend from St. James into Kalk Bay, bohemian seaside fishing town with great food and junk/antique shopping, pass through Fishhoek’s small town high street and arrive finally at Simonstown, an almost untouched Victorian and very British little seaside town, home to the SA Navy.

Of course whilst on the Peninsula it’s essential to pay a visit to Boulder’s Beach – one of many homes of the Jackass Penguin for which the Cape is famous. We’ll stop for lunch either at the former whaling station at Miller’s Point – The Black Marlin restaurant, or continue into the Cape Point Nature Reserve itself.

We’ll visit some of the more remote areas of the reserve such as Olifantsbos and Platboom Bay, from where you’ll able to see the many shipwrecks this treacherous coastline has given rise to over the years and obviously visit Cape Point and Cape of Good Hope too.

Coming back up the western coast, we’ll call in at The Food Barn – off beat food in friendly, natural surroundings in Noordhoek for tea and then drive over the stunningly beautiful and vertiginous mountain road that is Chapman’s Peak Drive.

We’ll stop off in Hout Bay a mid sized fishing town with quirky locals, fun food and relaxed beach before ending off at the millionire’s playground that is Camp’s Bay – palm trees, white sand and beautiful people.
