El Carnaval de Negros y Blancos fue declarado en el 2009 como Patrimonio Cultural Inmaterial de la Humanidad por la UNESCO. Es la fiesta más grande e importante del sur de Colombia. Se celebra del 2 al 7 de Enero en la ciudad de San Juan de Pasto, capital del departamento de Nariño al sur occidente de Colombia, aunque muchos municipios y poblaciones de ese departamento la han adoptado como propia.
El Carnaval de Negros y Blancos tiene su origen en la fusión de múltiples culturas y expresiones, correspondientes a los Andes, la Amazonia y la cultura del Pacífico. El carnaval nació en el siglo XVI en el año 1546. Este hecho lo caracteriza y distingue entre otras expresiones similares, empezando por la fecha en que se realiza, la cual tiene un origen netamente indígena, puesto que coincide con la celebración de la Luna (Quilla), que guarda reminiscencia con los rituales efectuados por los pastos y los quilla singas, culturas agrarias que, en época de cosecha, honraban con danzas a la luna, y en otros rituales hacían rogativas al sol, para amparar sus cultivos.
Hoy en día, el Carnaval de Negros y Blancos aglutina eventos como el Canto a la Tierra para celebrar las cosechas, el Carnavalito de comparsas y carrozas infantiles, el Desfile de Blancos y el Desfile de Negros, que conmemoran los primeros asentamientos de europeos y africanos en esta zona, y el Desfile de la Familia Castañeda, que honra a las primeras familias de colonos que llegaron a esta región del sur de Colombia.
Durante todas las festividades de este carnaval, las personas se lanzan harina, huevos, pintura y espuma, por lo que te recomendamos tener muy buena actitud, tolerancia y espíritu festivo para conmemorar la llegada del nuevo año.

The Carnival of Blacks and Whites was declared in 2009 as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. It is the largest and most important festival in southern Colombia. It is celebrated from January 2 to 7 in San Juan de Pasto, capital of the department of Nariño in the southwest of Colombia. However, many municipalities and populations of that department have adopted it as their own.
The Carnival of Blacks and Whites has its origin in the fusion of multiple cultures and expressions, corresponding to the Andes, the Amazon, and the Pacific culture. The carnival was born in the 16th century in the year 1546. This fact characterizes it and distinguishes it from other similar expressions, starting with the date on which it is held, which has a distinctly indigenous origin, since it coincides with the celebration of the Moon ( Quilla), which is reminiscent of the rituals performed by the pastures and the keel singas, agrarian cultures that, at harvest time, honored the moon with dances, and in other rituals made prayers to the sun, to protect their crops.
Today, the Carnival of Blacks and Whites brings together events such as the Song to the Earth to celebrate the harvests, the Carnavalito of comparsas and children's floats, the White Parade and the Black Parade, which commemorate the first settlements of Europeans and Africans. in this area, and the Castañeda Family Parade, which honors the first families of settlers that arrived in this region of southern Colombia.
