Overview

Imagine winding your way through lush mountain forests, following peaceful greenways through volcanic landscapes, riding quiet country roads with the Pyrenees beside you and the Mediterranean stretching out ahead. Along the way, leaving the bikes behind, we’ll continue to explore the coastline on foot, wandering through charming seaside villages, discovering beautiful coves and enjoying the flavours of Catalonia by the sea.

This is our Catalonia Uncovered Adventure — an unforgettable journey through one of Europe’s most spectacular and diverse cycling regions.

Beginning in the beautiful historic city of Girona, we’ll spend nine days exploring Catalonia from a unique perspective, combining cycling with walking, local culture, incredible food and stunning scenery. From the volcanic landscapes of La Garrotxa to the rugged coastline of Cap de Creus and the turquoise waters of the Costa Brava, every day brings something different.

Our journey takes us along former railway lines transformed into peaceful greenways, quiet country roads and gravel trails, through charming villages and into some of Catalonia’s most breathtaking landscapes. We’ll climb into the mountains, descend towards the coast and experience Catalonia from every angle.

There are challenging days that will get your heart racing, relaxed rides where you can simply soak up the scenery, and plenty of moments to stop, explore and enjoy the journey. We’ll discover Girona’s historic old town, ride along the spectacular Cap de Creus coastline, visit beautiful quiet villages and sample some of the region’s incredible local food and drink.

More than just a cycling holiday, this is an opportunity to experience Catalonia in all its variety — its landscapes, history, culture and food — while sharing the journey with a small group of fellow adventurers.

Girona (Meet & Greet + Walking Tour)

Your Catalan adventure begins in the beautiful city of Girona, where you’ll arrive a day before we set off on our bikes.

In the afternoon, we’ll meet our local guide at Plaça de la Independència for a two-hour walking tour through the historic heart of Girona. Wander through the atmospheric old town, discover its fascinating history, and take in the beautiful medieval streets, hidden corners and colourful architecture that make Girona such a special place to begin our adventure.

After exploring the city on foot, we’ll head to the cycle store for your bike fitout, making sure everything is ready for the days of riding ahead.

Then it’s time to relax, settle in and get to know your fellow adventurers over drinks and dinner in the charming old town. It’s the perfect way to ease into the adventure, soak up the atmosphere of Girona and enjoy our first evening together before the riding begins the following morning.

Good to know:

Hotel check-in is available from 3pm. You’re welcome to leave your luggage at the hotel reception until we are back from the walking tour and bike fitout. Full meeting points, timings and other practical details will be provided in your information pack after booking.

Ripoll to Olot

After our daily wellness session, your first day of riding begins in the historic mining town of Ripoll, where you’ll set off along a beautifully converted railway line Ruta del Ferro i del Carbó (directly translated to - the route of iron and coal) that now forms a peaceful greenway. The first 10km are relatively flat, giving you the chance to settle into the ride as the landscape gradually unfolds around you.

After passing through the charming village of Sant Pau de Segúries, the route begins to climb into the mountains towards the Capsacosta Pass. Winding through lush green forests and spectacular mountain scenery, the steady ascent rewards you with expansive views across the surrounding valleys and peaks. This is where the landscape truly opens up, with the feeling of being immersed in the wild beauty of Catalonia.

Once you reach the top, it’s time to enjoy a thrilling descent through the mountains, with the scenery changing as you make your way towards the valley below. The final 5km are wonderfully flat, leading you into Olot, the gateway to the volcanic landscape of La Garrotxa.

Olot to Girona

After breakfast, we’ll set off from Olot for a beautiful ride through the heart of Parc Natural de la Zona Volcànica de la Garrotxa, one of Catalonia’s most captivating natural landscapes. Following the Vies Verdes greenway, another former railway line transformed into a smooth cycling and walking path, the ride gently winds its way through the Catalan countryside towards Girona.

With a largely gradual descent, today’s route offers a wonderfully relaxed day in the saddle, allowing you to take in the scenery as it unfolds around you. Green valleys, quiet villages, volcanic landscapes and charming rural surroundings make this a truly scenic stretch of the adventure. The peaceful greenway provides the perfect setting to simply enjoy the rhythm of cycling and the beauty of the landscape.

As we make our way back towards Girona, the landscape gradually changes and the anticipation builds for another evening in this captivating city. Once back, there will be time to relax, explore the atmospheric streets of the historic old town and enjoy Girona at your own pace.

Day 4

Girona to Roses

It’s time to load up the panniers and set off once again, leaving Girona behind as we make our way towards the Costa Brava. Today’s route takes us along quiet country roads and peaceful trails, with the landscape gradually changing as we travel from the inland countryside towards the sea.

As we continue through the rolling Catalan countryside, we’ll follow peaceful gravel paths up the hill, where the landscape opens up to reveal spectacular panoramic views stretching from the distant Pyrenees to the shimmering Mediterranean. With the mountains and sea on the horizon, it’s a beautiful reminder of just how much this landscape has to offer as we make our way towards the coast.

As we continue towards Roses, the Mediterranean continues to reveal itself, and the scenery takes on a distinctly coastal character. Nestled between the sea and the mountains of the Cap de Creus peninsula, Roses is a vibrant coastal town with an impressive natural backdrop.

After a day of exploring the countryside on two wheels, we’ll arrive in Roses with the evening ahead to unwind, explore the waterfront and soak up the atmosphere of the Costa Brava coastline.

Distance: 69km

Good to know:

We’ll spend two nights here, giving you time to settle into the coastal rhythm, enjoy the town and make the most of this beautiful corner of Catalonia.

Day 5

Circular Ride through the National Park

Today brings one of the most adventurous rides of the trip — a challenging circular route through the spectacular Parque Natural del Cap de Creus to the enchanting coastal village of Cadaqués and back to Roses.

Leaving Roses behind, we’ll venture into the rugged landscapes of Cap de Creus, where the mountains meet the Mediterranean in dramatic fashion. The route follows a combination of gravel trails and undulating mountain roads, with plenty of climbing and descending along the way. Around every bend, the landscape reveals another breathtaking view of the wild coastline, rocky cliffs and deep blue Mediterranean stretching into the distance.

Our destination is the beautiful village of Cadaqués, tucked away on the coast and famous for its whitewashed buildings, winding streets and artistic heritage. After exploring the village and taking some time to soak up its unique atmosphere, there will be the opportunity to discover the connection between Cadaqués and Salvador Dalí, whose former home in nearby Portlligat is an iconic part of the area’s history.

From Cadaqués, we’ll make our way back towards Roses, tackling a steady climb before enjoying a thrilling downhill stretch towards the coast. It’s a demanding day in the saddle, but the spectacular scenery, sense of achievement and exhilarating descents make every climb worthwhile.

For those who would prefer a little extra assistance on the climbs, an e-bike option will be available.

Distance: 43km

Day 6

Coastal Walk + Ferry Ride

After yesterday’s challenging ride through Cap de Creus, today is all about slowing down and experiencing the Costa Brava from a different perspective.

We’ll leave our bikes behind and follow the coastline on foot, setting out from Roses along the beautiful seafront towards the picturesque beaches of Platja Canyelles Petites and Platja de l’Almadrava. The trail winds between rugged cliffs, Mediterranean vegetation and hidden bays, with spectacular views across the sparkling blue waters at every turn.

This is a chance to breathe in the sea air, explore some of the quieter corners of the Costa Brava and experience the coastline at a slower pace. Along the way, there will be plenty of opportunities to pause, take in the scenery and enjoy the crystal-clear Mediterranean waters.

There will also be an opportunity to experience the coastline from the water, with a scenic boat trip offering a completely different perspective of the rugged cliffs, hidden coves and sparkling Mediterranean sea. Whether exploring the coastline on foot or looking back towards it from the water, today offers a wonderful way to experience the beauty of Cap de Creus from every angle.

After several days of cycling, this slower-paced coastal adventure is the perfect opportunity to recharge, connect with nature and simply enjoy being by the sea.

Day 7

Day 7 image

Roses to L’Estartit

Today we follow the magnificent Costa Brava south, leaving Roses behind for a beautiful and largely flat ride along the coast. This is a chance to settle into an easy rhythm and simply enjoy the scenery as the Mediterranean accompanies us along the way.

The route takes us through the tranquil landscapes of the Parc Natural dels Aiguamolls de l’Empordà, a beautiful protected area of wetlands, fields and waterways that offers a peaceful contrast to the mountains and forests of the days before. As we continue south, the landscape gradually shifts back towards the coast, with the sparkling Mediterranean and the distinctive beauty of the Costa Brava coming increasingly into view.

We’ll make our way towards the historic village of Sant Martí d’Empúries, where there will be an opportunity to stop by the beach, dip your toes in the sea and take some time to relax before continuing towards L’Estartit.

With its beautiful coastline, golden beaches and spectacular views across the Mediterranean, L’Estartit provides the perfect destination for the day.

Distance: 46km

Day 8

Day 8 image

L’Estartit to Palamós

Today we head deeper into the heart of the Costa Brava, with a spectacular ride through some of the region’s most beautiful coastal landscapes.

Leaving L’Estartit behind, we’ll make our way towards Begur, a charming hilltop town and one of Costa Brava’s hidden gems. Perched above the surrounding coastline, Begur offers beautiful views across the Mediterranean and a wonderful taste of the character and charm that make this region so special.

From Begur, we’ll descend towards the coast and the picturesque village of Calella de Palafrugell. Here, the quintessential Costa Brava comes to life: tiny secluded coves, crystal-clear turquoise waters, rugged coastline and breathtaking views across the Mediterranean. It’s the kind of scenery that makes you want to stop the bike, take a deep breath and simply take it all in.

There are some serious climbs and descents along this stretch, so it’s time to get those climbing legs ready! But with every climb comes another spectacular viewpoint — and the reward of flying back down towards the coast.

Our destination for the evening is Palamós, a lively seaside town with a long fishing tradition and a vibrant waterfront. Known for its famous Palamós prawns, it’s the perfect place to finish the day, enjoy some fresh local seafood and soak up the atmosphere of the Mediterranean.

Distance: 48km

Day 9

Day 9 image

Palamós to Girona

Our final day begins with a gentle ride along the promenade in Palamós before we follow quiet coastal roads and gradually leave the Mediterranean behind. As the landscape changes once again, we’ll reconnect with the Vies Verdes — the peaceful greenways that have been part of our journey since the very beginning.

With mostly traffic-free riding and a relaxed final-day rhythm, today is all about enjoying the journey and taking in the landscapes one last time. The route winds through the beautiful Catalan countryside, offering a chance to slow down, reflect on the experiences of the past week and appreciate just how much ground we’ve covered — both on the bike and beyond it.

As we approach Girona, the journey comes full circle. From mountain roads and volcanic landscapes to hidden coves, rugged coastlines, charming villages and unforgettable Mediterranean views, we’ve experienced Catalonia from a truly unique perspective.

And then, almost before you’re ready for it, we’ll roll back into Girona — the city where our adventure began.

Distance: 47km

Good to know:

As the final day includes a fairly long ride back to Girona, we recommend avoiding flights or other onward travel booked for the same day. We expect to arrive in Girona in the early to mid-afternoon, after which we’ll return the bikes to the bike shop and give you time to transfer your belongings from your panniers back into your luggage. Once everything is sorted, you’re free to continue your journey or, if you prefer, stay and enjoy the rest of the afternoon and evening with us in Girona.
