Welcome to Oaxaca

Upon arrival at the Oaxaca airport, we'll be whisked away by private transportation to our hotel, where we'll check in and settle before venturing into town. We'll stroll through the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the city's Zócalo, immersing ourselves in its vibrant atmosphere as market vendors showcase an array of traditional treats. The alluring scents will tantalize your senses, preparing your taste buds for an unforgettable culinary adventure featuring quesillo, grasshoppers, ice cream, and a chocolate grinding tasting experience.

​To mark our arrival in Oaxaca, we'll gather for a special Welcome Dinner, embracing the start of our journey in this captivating destination.

Dia de Los Muertos Eve

Following breakfast, we'll embark on a unique experience: a visit to the "Plaza de Muertos," a special edition that occurs only once a year. Here, we'll collect items for a family altar that we'll assist in assembling. Amidst this gathering, we'll have the opportunity to sample some popular mezcales, savoring their flavors as we sip. As night falls, we'll embark on a tour of Oaxaca's renowned cemeteries, immersing ourselves in the tradition of honoring and remembering our loved ones.

Activities include:

  • Plaza de Muertos Market Tlacolula
  • Mole tasting & traditional Oaxacan dinner.
  • Day of the dead altar assembly with local family
  • Mezcal tasting
  • Evening cemetery tour

Day 3:

Dia de Los Muertos

On this day, our itinerary is filled with enriching experiences that delve deep into the heart of Oaxacan culture. We'll begin with a traditional Tlacolula muertos family breakfast, savoring the flavors of local cuisine while immersing ourselves in the vibrant traditions surrounding the Day of the Dead. Following breakfast, we'll participate in an Ofrenda making class, learning the intricate art of crafting altars to honor departed loved ones. Our journey continues with a poignant visit to the cemetery, where we'll pay our respects and witness the solemn beauty of remembrance. Then, we'll travel to Teotitlan del Valle to connect with a local family, delivering our heartfelt offerings and gaining insight into the rich tapestry of traditions that define their community. Finally, we'll visit a weaving workshop, where skilled artisans will demonstrate the time-honored craft of weaving with natural dyes, offering us a glimpse into the intricate techniques passed down through generations. ​

La Comparsa: Night Tour

Today promises a rich tapestry of experiences in the Tlacolula valley. Begin your journey with the freedom to explore the town's charming streets at your own pace. As dusk descends, immerse yourself in the vibrant Zapotec Comparsa tradition, where locals don colorful costumes and masks for a joyous dancing parade. Graciously invited by the community, we'll gather at a small, woman-owned distillery in Matalan, our host for the evening's festivities. Highlights include mesmerizing portrayals of the Devil and skeletons, symbolizing the cycle of life and death, while participants challenge societal norms, offering profound reflections amidst laughter and camaraderie.
