      About this trip

Looking to learn in a more challenging environment?  This is your event! Designed for returning students and riders looking for a more challenging learning environment. The same low energy, technique-over-brawn concepts that are taught in the ADV Camp are taught during the Challenge Camp, however they are all learned in more challenging environments.

Due to the nature of this training camp unexpected learning opportunities will occur, ensuring the lesson plan will be fluid, creating a unique class you will never forget!

Make sure you watch this video before signing up.

      Riding Conditions

This training primarily takes place on Class 3 and Class 4 or unintentionally Class 5 terrain. You are not expected to be able to ride your adventure bike through this type of terrain when you arrive, but you are expected to have the physical conditioning and mental drive needed to methodically work through challenging terrain.

This is not a class to show how much you already know or to pound your chest and “just send it”. This is a place to learn strategy and skills for overcoming difficult terrain on big bikes in a controlled manner.

      Additional Requirements

      1.  Boots. Due to the high risk locations in this training environment, you will not be allowed to participate wearing "Adventure" boots, work, street, or hiking boots.

      2.  Tires. It is highly recommended you show up with 50/50 tires or better. Each lesson is taught in a different area and your bike needs to be able to make it to the next location.

      3.  Mental Stamina. You need to show up with the mental ability to override your fears.

      4.  Physical Condition. Due to the mobility of this course, if you become physically exhausted, you may not be able to attend all lessons.

Penmerryl Farm in SW Virginia was an ideal location for an adventure motorcycling class with varied terrain, trails through the woods, hills, and surrounding roads to try things out. Bret and Paul were outstanding teachers and scaled things on an individual basis. I found the "less broad" curriculum allowed me to progress in needed skills more than more intensive 2-day trainings like the BMW Performance Center. Ten students, two instructors, great breakfasts, and good accommodations for campers as well as "indoor types." You get what you pay for and you can buy quality.

Went to learn skills on big adventure bikes. Came out with a big smile on my face and a better understanding of the management of my big adventure bike. Not a racing class but a class for travelers who want to have the skills to travel the world. It’s great to have Bret and Paul as a resource and for them to feed us their knowledge and skills.

hallenge Camp: Great for Experienced Riders Bret, Paul, and Greg are fantastic instructors! The Camp environment was friendly and professionally managed. Challenge Camp is truly challenging, much more so than regular training camps. As a beginner ADV rider, it was a bit too intense for me. I recommend this camp for mid-level and experienced riders. I even met some guys on their third Challenge Camp who were still learning and improving their techniques. I'll definitely be back for this training, but after completing a regular training camp first

Bret's Challenge Camp lived up to its name. I was definitely challenged to the edge of my limits, but most importantly I came away with new skills and the confidence to allow me to continue developing as an ADV moto rider. I really appreciated that Bret, Paul and Greg took efforts to adjust the training activities to ensure that everyone (including newbies like myself) would be exposed to an appropriate level of challenge for his ability/comfort level. Attitude definitely matters. What you get from the training will be directly related to how much you're willing to put into it; to move outside your own comfort zone. I would recommend this course but with the caveat that the person taking the course seriously understands his/her limits. The Sunday School Ride was also a blast and definitely capped a tremendous weekend.

I finally learned how to use my body position on the bike to get the bike to go where I want it to go. I have a long way to go before am "unconsciously competent", but I have progressed from Unconsciously Incompetent (I didn't know what I didn't know) so I now have a path to improvement.
