Like its location, Black Star Line Festival is named after a shipping company founded by political activist and journalist Marcus Garvey, which connected Africa’s global economy.

“Founded in 1919, and operated by Black people, the [Black Star Line] would link America, the Caribbean, and Africa, to global shipping and tourism opportunities,” the festival press release explains. “The Black Star Line was a symbol of pride, not only for Africans but also for Black people in all ports of call.”

The Black Star is also displayed on the country’s flag and shares its name with the government’s fleet.

Your adventure includes a moderate or luxury hotel in the Accra area.  You can choose 3 to 7 nights of tours to historic locations with an official African naming ceremony and of course the Black Star Concert. Airfare Optional Selection and based on availability so lock in your selection today.

TOUR OF W.E.B. DUBOIS CENTER & MORE

On your first full day in Ghana, after a sumptuous buffet breakfast at your hotel, we set off for the tour of Accra and the vicinity, passing through the economic and administrative districts. Visit the W.E.B. Du Bois Center honoring the life of one of the most prominent Pan-Africanists who chose to live and work in Ghana.

  • Independence Square where you will see the enclosed flame of African liberation, which was lit by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah in 1961. And drive past the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum.

  • James Town-one of Accra's most historic neighborhoods, where history resides on every comer. Best known for its lighthouses (the first of which was constructed in 1875 by the British) as a navigational aid for trading vessels sailing through the Gulf of Guinea. The original structure was ruined but a larger and more improved lighthouse completed in 1921 is still functioning today.

  • You may visit "Brazil House" and learn about the seven Afro Brazilians families who returned to settle in Ghana in 1836. Familiar Brazilian/Portuguese last names such as De Souza, Palmares, Azumah, Amorin, Da Costa, Santos, De Medeiros, and Olympia are abundant in this section of Accra.

  • End the day with a visit to Teshie Nungua. We will visit a local casket-making shop to see a collection of caskets carved in the shape of different objects, depicting traditional beliefs in life after death. The "Fantasy Coffins" of Teshie Nungua has been featured in National Geographic and can be found in museums and galleries worldwide.

You will see the "Slave River" where captured Africans were washed before being confined in the Slave Castles to await shipment to the Americas and the Caribbean.

In the afternoon Visit Cape Coast Castle and the Castle Museum for a guided tour. WORLD HERITAGE CENTER

Today, we participate in the "Fihankra'' ceremony after breakfast. Fihankra is a ceremony that seeks to reconnect people of African descent, who have been lost due to the transatlantic slave trade, to the motherland. This ceremony reconnects returnees with the cultural and spiritual ties that had been denied them for centuries. The final part of Fihankra includes a naming ceremony.

Continue to visit Kakum National Park. Kakum is one of Ghana's most famous parks. Take a brief walking tour on the forest floor; see birds, and butterflies and perhaps catch a glimpse of the forest's over 40 species of mammals including monkeys and the reclusive forest elephant.
