                                                                  About Chile's Wine

During the 19th century in  Bordeaux, France a plague of insects all but obliterated grapes used in making Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet and Carménère. France was able to rebound on most of it’s wines with the exemption of Carménère, which has found a new home in Chile, due to the perfect climate that is adequate for the deep red wine. The climate in the  central valleys in Chile make it an exceptional place for the Carménère to thrive due to the minimal rainfall during normal growing season.

This sought after wine is important because it was thought that the grapes used were extinct for over a hundred years. The Carménère plant in France was no longer able to adapt to the colder spring season. For the longest time Chilean farmers thought that  the Carménère was just a clone of Merlot grape.

In the early 90’s a French renowned  student of ampelographv, Jean Michel Boursiquot realized that the plant was not of Merlot but actually the Carménère. It wasn’t until Chile began producing the wine that it became world renowned ,winning awards in Asia, Australia and United States. The Central valley in Chile is one of the few places in the world that has a tolerable climate for growing Carménèr grapes and is a great area to visit during your stay in Chile.
