Itinerary

Descending Chimborazo
Hike & Bike

We leave at 9.00 from Riobamba. For about 1 hour we drive through the picturesque landscape of the Andean highlands before we enter the Reserva Faunística Chimborazo. After crossing El Arenal, a desert-like area where you can observe the vicuñas (a kind of lama), we park the car at 4850 m. / 15.912 ft. altitude, near the first refuge. From here you can make the optional hike to the Whymper refuge at 5060 m. / 16.601 ft. altitude, along a well marked trail. After the hike we will start the downhill mountain bike ride. We descend from 4850 m. / 15.912 ft. to 3100 m. /10170 ft. altitude, over a distance of 37 km. The first 8 km. are a dirt road and the remaining 29 km. are on an asphalted road with little traffic. On the way you can enjoy awesome views of Chimborazo and while you descend, you will see how the landscape changes. Our guide and support vehicle will stay close to you for assistance. Arrival at Riobamba at about 15.30
