About this trip

10 Day Circle of Life Safari | Tarangire, Ngorongoro, Ndutu & Central Serengeti

Experience northern Tanzania during one of the most fascinating periods of the Great Migration, when the southern plains become a gathering place for wildebeest preparing to give birth and the arrival of newborn calves brings heightened predator activity. This ten-day safari combines the elephant-rich landscapes of Tarangire National Park, the remarkable wildlife habitats of the Ngorongoro Crater, the seasonal calving grounds of Ndutu, and the expansive plains of the Central Serengeti.

Begin in Tarangire, where ancient baobab trees, large elephant herds, and the wildlife-rich Silale Swamp introduce the diversity of Tanzania's northern safari circuit. Continue through the Ngorongoro Highlands for a Maasai cultural encounter before descending into the Ngorongoro Crater for a full day of game viewing. The journey then follows the route through Olduvai Gorge toward Ndutu, where three nights provide time to explore the calving-season landscapes and observe the movement of wildebeest, newborn animals, and the predators that follow the herds.

From Ndutu, travel onward into the Central Serengeti, where open grasslands, rocky kopjes, and acacia woodland support a rich variety of resident wildlife. Two nights here allow further game drives before a scenic domestic flight returns you to Arusha. Throughout the journey, carefully selected lodges and tented camps, professional guiding, and arranged transfers bring together Tanzania's varied ecosystems in a safari shaped around the seasonal rhythms of the wilderness.

Why We Designed It This Way

This journey is designed for travelers who want to experience the Great Migration during calving season while discovering the remarkable variety of wildlife, landscapes, and cultural heritage found across northern Tanzania.

We begin in Tarangire rather than travelling directly to the Serengeti because its elephant herds, baobab-studded scenery, and Silale Swamp introduce a different side of Tanzania's wildlife landscape. From there, the route continues naturally through the Ngorongoro Highlands, combining a Maasai cultural visit with time in the Ngorongoro Crater. The stop at Olduvai Gorge adds historical depth before the safari moves into the southern migration ecosystem.

Three nights in Ndutu form the heart of the journey. The additional time allows for repeated game drives across the calving grounds, where wildlife activity changes with the movement of the herds and the presence of predators. Rather than limiting the experience to a single day, this allocation creates more opportunities to explore different areas and observe animal behavior as it unfolds. Two further nights in the Central Serengeti broaden the safari beyond the migration, introducing varied habitats and resident wildlife before a scheduled flight to Arusha provides a convenient conclusion.

Ngorongoro Crater to Ndutu | Crater Wildlife & Olduvai Gorge

From an Ancient Caldera to the Migration Plains

Enclosed by the walls of an ancient volcanic caldera, the crater floor contains grasslands, wetlands, and woodland habitats that support a remarkable concentration of animals. Ndutu | The Great Migration Calving Season

Where New Life Shapes the Rhythm of the Plains

Wake in Ndutu, where the surrounding grasslands become an important setting for the Great Migration during the calving season. At this time of year, large numbers of wildebeest may gather across the southern plains, drawn by seasonal grazing conditions. The arrival of newborn calves brings a different character to the migration, with herds remaining alert as they move through a landscape shared with predators.

Spend the day exploring Ndutu on guided game drives, searching for wildebeest, zebras, gazelles, and the lions, cheetahs, and hyenas that inhabit the area. Your guide will follow the day's wildlife activity and conditions, allowing time to observe the behavior of the herds and the interactions that unfold naturally across the plains.

Beyond the migration itself, Ndutu offers a varied landscape of open grassland, acacia woodland, and seasonal habitats that support a wide range of wildlife. Your game drives focus on the wildebeest and zebra herds, newborn animals, and the predators that follow their movements. Lions may be found resting near areas of concentrated prey, while cheetahs are often associated with the more open grasslands. Hyenas and other predators also form part of the complex relationships between wildlife species that characterize this season.

Take time to appreciate the wider landscape and the quieter moments between sightings, from the movement of animals across the grasslands to the changing light over the plains.
