The Classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is widely considered the most famous hike in South America. Over four days, you will traverse 26 miles (42 km) of original Inca stone pathways, crossing high Andean passes and lush cloud forests before entering the "Lost City of the Incas" through the exclusive Sun Gate.

Day 1: The Warm-Up (Km 82 to Wayllabamba

Your journey begins at Km 82 (Piscacucho). After passing the first checkpoint, the trail follows the Urubamba River with a gentle incline. You’ll visit the ruins of Llactapata, an ancient agricultural site.

  • Distance: 7.5 miles / 12 km

  • Walking Time: 5–6 hours

  • Max Altitude: 9,842 ft / 3,000 m

  • Difficulty: Moderate

Day 2: The Ultimate Challenge (Dead Woma

This is the most demanding day. You will climb steeply through the "Cloud Forest" to reach Warmiwañusca (Dead Woman’s Pass), the trail’s highest summit. The reward is a breathtaking 360-degree view of the Vilcanota mountain range before descending to the Pacaymayo camp.

Day 3: The Beautiful Descent (Pacaymayo

Day 3 is a favorite for many. You’ll cross the second pass (Abra Runkurakay) and explore several archaeological sites, including Sayacmarca and Phuyupatamarca (the "Town in the Clouds"). The day ends at Wiñay Wayna, the most beautiful ruins before Machu Picchu.

Day 4: The Lost City (Sun Gate to Machu

A pre-dawn start leads you to Intipunku (The Sun Gate). As the sun rises, you’ll get your first glimpse of Machu Picchu below. After a guided tour of the citadel, you’ll head down to Aguas Calientes to take the train back to Cusco.

  • Distance: 3.1 miles / 5 km

  • Walking Time: 2 hours

  • Max Altitude: 8,924 ft / 2,720 m

  • Difficulty: Easy/Moderate

To keep your pack light (ideally under 15–20 lbs), prioritize high-quality layers.

  • Original Passport (Mandatory for checkpoints), Insurance.

  • Clothing Moisture-wicking base layers, fleece jacket, waterproof poncho, 4 pairs of hiking socks, and a sun hat.

  • Footwear Broken-in waterproof hiking boots and sandals/sneakers for camp.
