Explore one of Colombia’s most extraordinary birding regions on our Santa Marta Majesty Birding Tour along the Caribbean Coast. This immersive journey takes us from coastal wetlands and tropical dry forests to the misty cloud forests of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, home to an exceptional concentration of endemic birds found nowhere else on Earth.
Designed for birders and nature travelers who value meaningful wildlife encounters, this Colombia birding tour combines rare and colorful birds, breathtaking landscapes, diverse ecosystems, and conservation-minded travel for an unforgettable Caribbean adventure.
Birding Man Wildlife Tours is passionate about supporting conservation through sustainable travel. Having spent two years in Ecuador as a Peace Corps volunteer, Birding Man founder and guide Ryan Dibala has remained in close contact with several communities across Latin America.
International travel inevitably carries an environmental footprint, and Birding Man believes it’s important to acknowledge and address that reality. For every tour, Birding Man Wildlife Tours contributes 5% of trip proceeds to the Rick Steves’ Europe Climate Smart Fund, an innovative program that invests roughly $1 million annually in nonprofit initiatives focused on climate-smart agriculture, forestry, and community resilience in developing nations. Rather than relying on traditional carbon credit markets, this approach supports practical, on-the-ground solutions that help farmers, empower women, and strengthen climate resilience while advancing effective climate policy.
Birding Man donates 5% of annual profits to wildlife habitat conservation initiatives, helping protect the ecosystems and species that make these journeys possible. Our goal is simple: to ensure that travel not only inspires a deeper connection with nature, but also contributes meaningfully to its protection.

Arrive at Barranquilla’s Ernesto Cortissoz International Airport, where your guides will greet you and transfer you to our hotel. Located along Colombia’s Caribbean Coast, Barranquilla is the gateway to our adventure through the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and surrounding coastal habitats. Settle in, meet your fellow travelers, and enjoy a welcome dinner and tour orientation as we prepare for an unforgettable week of birding.
Our Colombia birding adventure begins around Barranquilla, where we’ll search for coastal specialties before exploring the mangroves and freshwater wetlands of Salamanca Island Nature Reserve. These productive habitats offer opportunities to encounter rare hummingbirds, waterbirds, and tropical forest species. Continuing along the Caribbean Coast, we’ll explore additional wetlands before heading inland to Minca, a charming mountain village surrounded by lush foothill forests and coffee plantations.
Today we ascend into the spectacular Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, one of the world’s great centers of avian endemism. Traveling by 4WD along the mountain road above Minca, we’ll bird through increasingly lush forests in search of species found nowhere else on Earth. Our destination is a comfortable mountain ecolodge surrounded by cloud forest, where breathtaking views and extraordinary birdlife await.
An early departure takes us high into the San Lorenzo Ridge, where the cool mountain forests harbor an extraordinary concentration of endemic birds. We’ll explore the upper elevations in search of rare and range-restricted specialties, with spectacular views across the Sierra Nevada and Caribbean lowlands. After a morning of mountain birding, we’ll descend toward our lodge, enjoying additional birding opportunities along the way and exploring nearby forest trails in the afternoon.
We descend from the Santa Marta Mountains, making birding stops along the way to search for any mountain specialties we may have missed. After lunch in Minca, we’ll travel east along the Caribbean Coast toward Palomino, where tropical lowland forests provide an exciting contrast to the cool mountain habitats. Here, we’ll search for colorful manakins, antbirds, woodpeckers, and other forest specialties before settling into our coastal accommodations.
Today we explore the fascinating Los Flamencos Flora and Fauna Sanctuary near Camarones, where coastal lagoons and wetlands provide habitat for American Flamingos and numerous other waterbirds. Beyond the wetlands, the arid tropical dry forests and thorn scrub of La Guajira support an entirely different community of birds, including several specialties restricted to northern Colombia and neighboring Venezuela. This distinctive landscape offers some of the most colorful and memorable birding of our journey.
Our journey continues west along Colombia’s beautiful Caribbean Coast, exploring tropical lowland forests near Las Gaviotas before traveling toward Tayrona National Park. Here, lush forests meet dramatic coastal scenery, creating a rich mosaic of habitats for resident and migratory birds. We’ll spend the day searching for elusive forest species, colorful manakins, and other tropical wildlife while enjoying the remarkable landscapes of northern Colombia.
We’ll enjoy a final morning of birding in Tayrona National Park, exploring tropical forests where colorful birds and fascinating mammals thrive. Along the trails, we’ll search for additional forest specialties while keeping watch for Cotton-top Tamarins and other wildlife. After lunch, we’ll travel to Barranquilla’s airport for our departing flights, bringing our unforgettable Colombia birding adventure to a close.
