      About this trip

Sporting three Andean mountain ranges, Colombia is a birder’s paradise with a remarkable variety of landscapes and near 20% of all bird species on the planet. This week we focus on “La Cordillera Occidental”, the Western Andes, which rise above the Pacific and the Choco offering an amazing variety of startlingly beautiful and special birds.

This 1-week trip is based at just two hotels. One in the scenic mountains around and outside of Cali, the nation’s 3rd most populous city, and the other just below the Western Andes’s highest peak, Cerro Tatamá. Featuring a cool crisp climate, good photo opps, excellent birding along mountain trails and roads with a great list of showy endemics, we base ourselves at one luxurious lodge for the first four nights, and a more remote lodge surrounded by an intensely biodiverse wilderness for the final three nights.

Josh was an excellent tour leader. He worked hard to assist members in our group with special dietary needs, as well as challenging mobility needs. He has an amazing grasp of Costa Rica birds and their sounds, making sure we all got good looks at the birds. Our accommodations met our expectations, showcasing the diverse jungles, mountains and cloud forests of the country. I will hire Hillstar and especially Josh Coville for future bird tours.

I really enjoyed the opportunity to be a guest in India. I was very privileged to be guided by experts including George Armistead, Surya Ramachandran, and Harish Sharma who shared there extensive knowledge of the animals and other aspects of the wetlands. The wildlife viewing is phenomenal in Keoladeo National Park . The trip down the Chambal River was fantastic with great views of Gharial, Muggers, turtles and birds. The trip also included quick glimpses of river dolphin.

This was definitely a trip of a lifetime and has made me want to return to India with Hillstar Nature tours. It was a chance to see a different diverse culture, enjoy the food, and the beautiful countryside and wildlife. I would recommend this trip to anyone who is curious, flexible, and loves the outdoors.

Overall a great trip! Hotels were spectacular, especially Termales del Ruiz. Our guides were among the best and the group was awesome. Highly recommended.
