8 Days Trekking | 2 Hotel Nights | Tanzania
Climb Africa's highest mountain via the Lemosho Route, one of Kilimanjaro's most scenic and rewarding trails. This ten-day journey includes eight days on the mountain, with a hotel stay before and after the climb. Approaching from the quieter western slopes, Lemosho combines varied landscapes, wilderness camping and a gradual ascent toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres.
Beginning in Kilimanjaro's remote western rainforest, the trail ascends through lush forest before emerging onto the expansive Shira Plateau, where panoramic views of Kibo and the surrounding mountain landscape unfold. The journey continues across high-altitude moorland, beneath the Southern Ice Field and through the dramatic Barranco Valley before reaching the final approach to the summit.
The eight-day itinerary allows additional time for acclimatization, including a gradual ascent across the Shira Plateau, a climb to Lava Tower before descending to Barranco Camp and an overnight stop at Karanga Camp. Supported by an experienced mountain crew, the journey combines a well-paced climbing schedule with the challenge of reaching Africa's highest summit.
Choose this journey if you want a scenic Kilimanjaro climb with a more gradual acclimatization profile, quieter trails during the early stages and time to experience the mountain's changing landscapes.
We recommend the eight-day Lemosho itinerary over shorter variations because the additional trekking days allow for a more measured ascent, particularly across the Shira Plateau before reaching the higher elevations. The route also incorporates a climb-high, sleep-low approach between Lava Tower and Barranco Camp, providing further opportunities for acclimatization before the summit attempt.
Unlike Machame, which begins on Kilimanjaro's busier southern slopes, Lemosho approaches from the west before joining the southern circuit. This makes it particularly well suited to travelers who value scenic variety, a less crowded beginning to their climb and a carefully paced journey rather than the shortest route to the summit.

Your climb begins with a transfer to Londorossi Gate, where your guides complete the park formalities before continuing to the Lemosho trailhead on Kilimanjaro's western slopes.
The trail leads into dense tropical rainforest, where towering trees, moss-covered vegetation and the sounds of the forest create a distinctly different atmosphere from the mountain's higher elevations. The western approach is generally quieter than some of Kilimanjaro's more established starting routes, with opportunities to spot colobus monkeys and other forest wildlife along the way.
Continue through the forest toward Mti Mkubwa Camp, also known as Big Tree Camp, where you will spend your first night on the mountain.
Approx. 6 km | 3–4 hours | Overnight at 2,650 m

Overnight: Mti Mkubwa Camp
Leaving the rainforest behind, the trail climbs steadily through giant heathers and open moorland as the landscape begins to change.
The ascent reveals increasingly expansive views across Kilimanjaro's western slopes, with the dramatic outline of Kibo gradually appearing in the distance. Continue across a series of ridges and valleys before reaching the western edge of the Shira Plateau, one of the mountain's most distinctive volcanic landscapes.
Arrive at Shira I Camp, where you will spend the night surrounded by open mountain scenery.
Approx. 8 km | 5–6 hours | Overnight at 3,500 m

Overnight: Shira 1 Camp
Today offers a more gradual trekking day as you continue across the expansive Shira Plateau, with sweeping views of Kilimanjaro's western slopes and the distant summit of Kibo.
The trail crosses open moorland and gently undulating terrain, allowing time to appreciate the scale of the plateau and its unusual alpine vegetation. As you move farther east, the mountain's upper slopes become increasingly prominent against the surrounding landscape.
Arrive at Shira II Camp in the afternoon, with time to rest and continue adjusting to the altitude before the climb progresses into more demanding terrain.
Approx. 8 km | 3–5 hours | Overnight at 3,850 m
Meals: Full Board
Overnight: Shira II Camp
Today is an important acclimatization day as the trail ascends toward Lava Tower, a striking volcanic formation at approximately 4,600 metres.
The landscape becomes increasingly barren as you climb into the alpine desert, with dramatic views of Kilimanjaro's upper slopes and surrounding valleys. After reaching Lava Tower, descend into the Barranco Valley, where giant groundsels and other unusual alpine plants create a striking contrast against the rugged mountain terrain.
Arrive at Barranco Camp beneath the imposing Barranco Wall, where you will spend the night at a lower elevation than the day's highest point.
Approx. 10 km | 6–8 hours | Overnight at 3,900 m
Meals: Full Board
Overnight: Barranco Camp
Begin the morning with one of Kilimanjaro's most distinctive challenges: the ascent of the Barranco Wall.
Although the wall appears intimidating from below, the route follows a series of rocky ledges and scrambling sections that your guides will help you navigate. Reaching the top rewards you with expansive views across the southern slopes of Kilimanjaro.
Continue through a landscape of ridges and valleys before descending into the Karanga Valley and making the final climb toward Karanga Camp.
The shorter trekking day provides additional time to rest and acclimatize before continuing toward the higher elevations.
Approx. 5 km | 4–5 hours | Overnight at 4,000 m

Overnight: Karanga Camp
Continue upward through the alpine desert, where vegetation becomes sparse and the mountain's rugged upper slopes dominate the landscape.
The trail climbs steadily toward Barafu Camp, your final overnight stop before the summit attempt. From here, the surrounding ridges and distant peaks reveal the scale of the climb ahead.
After arriving at camp, enjoy an early meal and a briefing with your mountain guides before resting in preparation for the demanding ascent toward Uhuru Peak.
Approx. 4 km | 3–4 hours | Overnight at 4,640 m
Meals: Full Board
Overnight: Barafu Camp
Your summit attempt begins around midnight, climbing slowly through the darkness toward Stella Point on the crater rim.
The ascent is physically demanding, with steep scree slopes, cold temperatures and the effects of high altitude making every step more challenging. As dawn approaches, the surrounding landscape begins to emerge, revealing views across Kilimanjaro's glaciers and volcanic crater.
Subject to weather, conditions and your guide's assessment, continue from Stella Point toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 metres.
After time at the summit, begin the long descent past Barafu Camp and continue toward Millennium Camp, where you will spend your final night on the mountain.
**Approx. 15 km | 10–14 hours |
Meals: Breakfast
Overnight: Millennium Camp
Wake up in the montane rainforest at Millennium Camp, where the lower altitude offers a welcome change after the summit attempt. After breakfast, begin the final descent toward Mweka Gate, following the trail through the forest as the landscape becomes greener and more sheltered.
At Mweka Gate, complete the park exit formalities and celebrate the completion of your Kilimanjaro climb with your mountain team. You will then be transferred to your hotel, where you can rest and reflect on your journey to Uhuru Peak.
Approx. 12 km | 4–5 hours | Mweka Gate at 1,640 m

Overnight: Legendary Lodge
Enjoy a relaxed morning at your hotel before your scheduled transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward flight. Depending on your departure time, you can enjoy your final hours in Tanzania at leisure before leaving the mountain behind.
