About this trip

Costa Rica may the epicenter of modern-day ecotourism, but many people forget that it had one of the highest rates of deforestation in Central America in the late 1980s. What did Costa Rica do to turn things around so drastically and become a world leader in sustainable tourism? Join Birding Man Adventures on a 10-day adventure exploring biodiversity conservation, Costa Rican culture and governance, and ecotourism.

Why Choose Birding Man Adventures?

Birding Man Adventures (BMA) is passionate about supporting conservation through sustainable travel. Having spent time living and doing research in Costa Rica, BMA founder and guide Ryan Dibala has remained in close contact with several different communities in Costa Rica. He has professional working relationships and friendships with several of the guides who will be leading this tour. You can feel great about your dollars directly supporting local "Ticos" and the projects they are working on.

Lodging

The lodging used on this trip is second to none in class and ambiance. In San Jose, we will stay in what has been called an oasis of calm at Hotel Robledal only a half hour from the airport. We will transfer to a birdwatcher's paradise, the Villa Lapas Jungle Village at the intersection between dry and wet tropical forest on the coast. There, we will explore Carara National Park and the Tarcoles River after which we will relocate to BelCruz B & B in the cloud forests of Monteverde. From there, we will transfer to the famous town of La Fortuna where we will stay at the beautiful Arenal Observatory Lodge. Two days later, we will reach our most remote destination in the lowland Caribbean jungles of Sarapiqui at Yatama Eco Lodge. Finally, we will come full circle and spend our last night once again at Hotel Robledal. At each location, we will eat great food prepared with care while enjoying first class service and unrivaled natural beauty.

Ryan worked very hard to take us to the birds - they weren’t always there, but that wasn’t his fault of course. On the other hand, there were unexpected surprises. We made many stops and saw a good variety of species. Ryan was also flexible and willing to change the plan according to the wishes of the group. The only downside of this tour was the number of people - the van was a bit too crowded. Although everyone in the group was easy to get along with, 2 less folks would make a world of difference in the comfort level. Having said that, I would still highly recommend a trip with Ryan.

This was an energetic trip from the start. There are several early morning starts in pursuit of fantastic birds. The scenery is outstanding. We saw all of the major species we set out to observe and, ultimately, almost 100 species. Ryan is a genial, energetic, and considerate guide. All the accommodations were good and reliable. Participants need to be able to pop in and out of the van and to manage both rocky and snowy trails. It was a fantastic trip and we recommend it highly!

I had a great time, personable and knowledgeable guide, learned a lot, saw a lot of birds. Enjoyed the areas we explored. Met my expectations and then some. Sometimes rushed for time but as a birder this is to be expected. Liked the B+B in Wray Colorado. Really enjoyed meeting with the ranchers in both Colorado and Kansas and seeing a slice of American life that I doubt I will ever experience again.

This trip was an incredible birding adventure. We had a great group of people and nonstop excitement. We visited several different kinds of habitats and stayed in amazing lodges. Birding Man Adventures took care of everything, from transportation, lodging, and meals to park entries and local guides. We didn't have to worry about a thing because it was all prearranged on our behalf, allowing us to focus exclusively on the overall experience and birding. The price was great too. There's no way we would have been able to do everything we did during this trip for the money without booking this tour. The group logged 308 species total, and my wife and I saw 242 lifers in just 8 days. We simply could not have been that successful if we had tried to do this kind of trip on our own. I fully recommend Birding Man Adventures. Ryan is a great guy and very easy to travel with. We had an outstanding time and have already booked another trip with Birding Man Adventures!
