Hiking the Crow Pass Trail then paddling Eagle River offers all the best parts of Alaska: traveling the Historic Iditarod Trail, viewing historic mining areas, taking in waterfall views & epic glacial scenery in the high alpine before floating downstream.DAY 1Our driver picks you up in Anchorage for an hour drive along the Turnagain arm to the Crow Pass Trailhead in Girdwood.  The trail gradually climbs up the valley, gaining 2000ft while we pass by & explore historic mining claims.  After 3 miles, we’ll see Raven Glacier- a view worth spending some soaking up, before we arrive at the route’s high point, Crow Pass, 3500ft.  The route towards the Eagle River is downhill, but requires hiking through rocky glacial moraine. thick brush, and sometimes snow; the trail is less maintained & not always obvious at times.There are multiple camping options; we’ll make a group decision & spend the night near the Raven Gorge or closer to Eagle River.DAY 2Once we arrive at the river, we switch to packraft mode & go over a river safety review.  The first ¼ mile is the most technical & challenging section; the current is swift with waves or holes worth avoiding.  If you aren’t ready to “hit the ground running” you have the option to put-in downstream, below these features. The river slows down, but remains engaging as we maneuver through gray glacial braids, steer around log jams & stay alert for bears & moose.  The views of the Chugach Mountains while floating downstream are impressive & better from the river, views only packrafters see, as the trail stays hidden in the brush.We takeout after 8 miles, above Echo Bend’s class IV rapids, turning back to hiking mode for the final 3 miles.  We’ll meet our driver at Eagle River Nature Center & for an hour drive back to Anchorage.Download the Gear List for Overnight TripsPrerequisitesMust be comfortable paddling class II & able to hike up to 8 hours with a heavy backpack (up to 50 lbs), carrying personal gear, through mountain terrain. Level 3: Intermediate Whitewater Skills

Super detailed, thorough and incredibly helpful class taught be an extremely experienced instructor. 

Level 1: Paddle Skills, Body Mechanics & Self-Rescue

We had an excellent 2.5 days whitewater training camp with Peter as our instructor.  Opportunities to practice self and partner rescue, team rescue,, throw ropes,  as well as essential Skills (Eddy entry and depart, river reading and group communication, safety & paddling strokes).  Highly recommend.  We took this course last year too,; taking it again was an opportunity to build on our skills, address personal goals/ challenges and gain knowledge from a patient and  highly skilled teacher in a small group setting (with really fun classmates!) 


Level 2: Whitewater Essentials

Recently did the Women’s Nizina River Expedition trip with Jule and Emily at APS. It was such a fun experience and really met my wishes as far as building confidence to execute backcountry packrafting trips on my own with my pals where I was lacking it before. Jule and Emily’s experience and mentoring throughout the planning and trip was so cool. It’s a really special gift to get mentorship from ladies like them. APS’ culture of safety and ensuring that we’re all trained to self and partner rescue is great and really made for a great group of backcountry partners. Highly worth the cost and would do a trip like this again just to meet cool new paddle partners. Started as a group of mostly strangers and I feel like I made a bunch of new friends! 

Nizina River: Women’s Expedition Training

This was a great class!  I have been packrafting for over ten years and I learned very valuable things within the first ten minutes of class. Everything from boat fitting to paddle strokes and techniques to self rescue to water safety to assisted rescues was extremely valuable. Both instructors were very knowledgeable, excellent teachers and fun people. I highly recommend this course!

The whitewater Essentials course (women’s only weekend) was waaaaay better than I expected! The two instructors, Jule and Fiona, were exceptional teachers, guides, supporters, and packrafters too! I felt so comfortable with them as leaders, in a context where you have have quite a bit of fear: a moving river! I was pretty nervous ahead of time, but ended up feeling confident and more of a badass than I thought, with their guidance. Fun, friendly, experienced, captivating. If you’re considering, do it!!
