Alla Prima Plein Air

Learn invaluable tools for tackling Alla Prima painting with confidence. The term Alla Prima means 'At One Go'. In his remarkable treatise 'In Praise of Painterly Painters', the late artist, author and teacher, Charles Movalli wrote; painterly painters are surrounded by seeming contradictions. They finish by not finishing, include by leaving out, paint more by painting less. Their means are easy to see, the results, immediately felt. But how such seemingly insufficient means lead to these results is a mystery.

In this five-day plein air workshop, we will explore this method of Alla Prima painting. Economy of stroke is within every painters grasp if they are willing to approach the painting process with a 'Less Is More' mind set. Our goal with each painting will be to see our subject as shapes of color and value and not as individual objects. When viewed in this way, we can look at our subject with a painters eye, react quickly and make confident marks on the canvas that are uniquely an expression of our individual selves.

There will be a daily demonstration with discussions on composition, design, edges, value and color. A thorough understanding of these concepts is key to giving our paintings the feeling of light and atmosphere. Beginners to experienced artist are welcome.

About David & Pam Lussier

Pamela Lussier is best described as a painterly realist. A 1978 graduate of the Art Institute of Boston, she has been active for more than 20 years, in the national plein air scene teaching workshops and participating in national paint outs including Easels of Frederick, Frederick, MD, Wayne Plein Air Festival, Wayne, PA, & Fingerlakes Plein Air, Canadaigua. Her most recent awards are a First Place Award, Quick Draw competition in Quechee Vermont and 2nd place at the New Hampshire Art Association Annual Plein Air Event.

"In my work I wish to give to my viewer a feeling of calmness and healing in these turbulent times. I also wish to design into these paintings a strong abstract pattern base to provide the feeling of inner strength, so the viewer will sense a strong overall force holding this world together. With the use of color, brushwork and edges, I also strive to show the uniqueness of place in my natural subject pieces as well as a certain quality in my narrative paintings that gives the viewer a sense that every individual life matters."

In December of 2007, Pam was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a blood cancer, which resulted in the loss of her kidney function. Though her cancer remained in total remission after treatment, she had to receive dialysis treatment for six years. Pam continued to paint and teach. Her positive work ethic and attitude made her an inspiration to all those around her. Family, friends and students have all been touched by Pam's ability to press on with a sense of normality, often putting their needs above her own. She received a new donor kidney in 2013 and is thriving with this new chance at life.

Pam currently paints full time, teaches painting workshops with her husband David Lussier and helps manage the Todd Bonita Gallery in Perkins Cove, Ogunquit Maine during the summer season.

David Lussier has been immersed in the Plein Air scene since 2001. His first ever introduction to plein air events was at the prestigious Laguna Beach Invitational in 2004, 2005 & 2006, held at the Laguna Art Museum in Laguna Beach CA. Every year since then, he has competed in a variety of top plein air invitational and juried events, winning awards in almost every venue, including numerous Best of Show and First Place awards. His most recent awards include Second Place at the Wayne Plein Air Festival, Second Place at Plein Air Richmond and the award for Best Working Harbor at Cape Ann Plein Air.

David Lussier is known for his sophisticated color sense, poetic brushwork and his ability to convey emotion in a painting. His 'Less Is More' approach to painting has garnered him numerous accolades throughout his long career in plein air painting. He has competed extensively throughout the United States in both juried and invitational plein air competitions and has been juror for numerous events. In 2019, David will be a juror of selection for the Finger Lakes Plein Air Competition held in Canandaigua NY in June, and the overall juror of selection and awards at Paint Ocean City MD. He is an extremely knowledgeable instructor, who can reach students at their own individual level. David's workshops are filled with demos and plenty of hands on instruction. He never asks his students to do anything that he has not demonstrated or explained first in the workshop. Composition, values, color, brushwork and edge control are all a part of his step-by-step approach. In order to ensure plenty of individual instruction at the easel, all workshops are limited to a maximum of 15 students. When she is not involved with her own painting commissions and projects, David is assisted by his wife Pam. Pam is an award winning plein air painter, talented and knowledgeable, who brings a second pair of eyes and skills to assist the workshop student. Together they make up an exciting and amusing team and are known as the original "Plein Air Pair.

David Lussier is an award-winning contemporary impressionist and nationally recognized plein air painter and workshop instructor. He is a painter in the purist sense of the word. In his poetic and intimate oil landscapes he strives to capture the essence and sense of place of his subject matter. His use of bold broad brushwork brings the surfaces to life and begs the viewer to return for a second look. David was trained in classical realism at Paier College of Art in Hamden CT. He started his career as a commercially trained illustrator, but quickly realized that his passion was in the fine arts. It was when he started painting the landscape plein air that he realized that he had found his true calling. He has been painting professionally for more than twenty five years, has garnered more than 75 prizes for his work and is in numerous private and corporate collections throughout the United States. His work has been featured more than 6 times in professional art publications, and he has held professional memberships in some of the finest art associations and groups in the country. David is also an official U.S. Open artist for the United States Golf Association. Four of his paintings hang in the permanent collection of the USGA Museum in Far Hills New Jersey.
