San Miguel de Allende, a UNESCO World Heritage site, sets the perfect stage for our all-inclusive, luxury 5-day/4-night retreat.

About Día de los Muertos

Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a captivating Mexican holiday that honors and celebrates departed loved ones. This unique cultural experience encompasses a variety of traditions, including the creation of altars adorned with photographs, vibrant orange marigolds, and revelers with intricately painted faces. The streets come alive with parades, representations of human skeletons and skulls (calacas and calaveras), and the display of offerings (ofrendas) along roads and in graveyards.

Discover San Miguel de Allende

Nestled in north-central Mexico, San Miguel de Allende is a picturesque town renowned for its pristine Colonial and Spanish architecture. Drawing expats and artists alike, this charming destination provides the perfect backdrop for a celebration that blends pre-Hispanic culture with Catholicism.

Festivities in the Heart of the City

As the city gears up for the festivities, the main square becomes the epicenter of activity. Colorful flags flutter between the Parish gate and the trees, welcoming visitors from around the world. The atmosphere is electric as the town prepares for the grand celebration, where ancient traditions intertwine with contemporary festivity.

During the festival days, witness the transformation of the city with colorful altars lining the streets, churches, hotels, and even some shops. Engage in contests showcasing thousands of photographs and marvel at competitions featuring intricately carved pumpkins. Don't miss the enchanting parade of children from the American community dressed as Catrinas, who distribute sweets in a lively procession through the central plaza.

A Retreat Beyond Tradition

Our 5-day/4-night retreat is designed to offer a unique blend of cultural immersion, relaxation, and exploration. While we have exciting excursions planned, please note that everything is entirely optional, and the itinerary is subject to change due to weather conditions.

Embrace the essence of Día de los Muertos with the scent of incense, the offerings on the altars, skull-shaped caramel candies (calaveritas), marigold flowers, candles, prayers, and the rhythmic music accompanying pre-Hispanic dances. Experience the magic of this cultural phenomenon while enjoying the luxury of our carefully curated retreat.

Travel Basics

Travel Basics: Safety in San Miguel de Allende

Welcome to San Miguel de Allende, a city rich in history, culture, and vibrant celebrations. We understand that safety is a top concern for travelers, and we want to address your apprehensions and ensure a worry-free experience.

Is San Miguel de Allende Safe?

Absolutely, yes. While no destination can guarantee absolute safety, San Miguel de Allende is known for its welcoming atmosphere and low crime rates. To ensure a secure visit, consider these travel basics:

  1. Common Sense Traveling: Practice common sense habits, just as you would anywhere in the world. Lock your doors, secure your belongings, and avoid excessive public intoxication.
  2. Geographical Perspective: Mexico is vast and diverse, much like the United States. Incidents in one region don't necessarily reflect the safety of another. San Miguel de Allende is far removed from areas experiencing cartel violence.
  3. Targeted Crimes: Drug-related crimes are often targeted. By staying out of illegal activities, you significantly reduce the likelihood of being targeted.
  4. Media Awareness: Stay informed about current events, but be discerning. Media can sometimes sensationalize or provide incomplete information. Compare the perceived risk to the realities in your own hometown.
  5. Tourist Areas: While generally safe, crowded tourist spots may have a higher risk of petty theft. Be vigilant, use anti-theft travel gear, and trust your instincts when assessing situations.

Travel Basics: Getting Around San Miguel de Allende

Explore San Miguel de Allende with confidence by considering these travel tips:

  1. Walking Shoes: The city's varied sidewalks demand comfortable and sturdy walking shoes. From cobblestones to slippery rocks, be prepared for diverse terrain.
  2. Attention to Surroundings: Navigating the lively streets filled with pedestrians and cars requires extra attention. Stay aware of your surroundings to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
  3. Shoe Damage Control: Beyond personal safety, be mindful of your footwear. Uneven sidewalks and unexpected obstacles can take a toll on your shoes.

I recently returned from a Yoga/trekking retreat to Peru (October '24) with Cassie Paul. It was just wonderful. Cassie led this group with grace. I really appreciated and noticed how she frequently checked in with everyone to see how we all were doing and encouraged us daily. I would 100% recommend attending any retreat being led by Cassie. I hope to do this again someday.

Thank you for organizing our dream private tour to Madagascar! We knew we wanted to visit such a magical country but had no idea about logistics and how to get from one place to another. By working with Walker Wellness Retreats, we were able to see everything we wanted to see during the dates we needed. Everything was easy and made planning so much more simple (as it should be for vacation!).
