Itinerary

Day Trip: Imlil
Explore Morocco's High Atlas Mountains

After breakfast, you'll be picked up at your riad. You'll enjoy a beautiful drive to the village of Imlil and its surroundings.

Upon arrival, you'll meet your trekking Guide for introduction to the first habitants of the High Atlas Mountains. You'll then set off on a 3.5 hour hike with amazing landscapes. You'll stroll through fields and orchards of apples, peaches, cherries, and apricots (seasonal). You'll enjoy a nice top at the waterfalls in Ait Mizan Valley, there is a possibility for swimming, if you wish. You'll continue on and discover typical village life in a community of about 60 families. It is here where you'll have lunch at the home of a local family. You'll learn how traditional mint tea is made and experience a bread demonstration.  Vegetarian options are available.

Note: Hiking can be accommodated to easy, moderate, or strenuous levels.

You'll head back to Marrakech late afternoon.

Send us a message if you'd like to upgrade to an overnight at a homestay in this amazing area.

The positives: Great scenic drive through mountains on the way to the Sahara. Great choices for stops that varied from Geographical to Cinematic (a movie studio) to Kasbahs and prehistoric dinosaur dig sites. If problems arose the host/driver handled them perfectly. Very good at accommodating food preferences. The stay near the Sahara was worth the drive. Water. Every time I turned around the driver was handing us water. Makes sense. Dehydration out there can sneak up on you. Coins for the Toilettes were provided as well. Driver/Host was flexible on stops for restrooms-much appreciated. Hotels were comfortable and peaceful. Food was delicious and dining at the hotels was standard each night. Helpful Tips: Bring Cash in the local currency (the exchange rate from the locals is...ahem...conservative if you know what I mean). Learn about tipping customs and how much to tip, European and USA standards seemed a little bit too liberal in this part of the world. My group actually "yelled" at me to the point where it was uncomfortable and awkward. Learn how to negotiate purchase prices. It seems to be the way here. Do not use the tap water in the big cities. The negatives: If you are an atypical body type or have difficulty being exposed to males that may be touching you during the car ride, due to lack of space in the small suv vehicle, this may not be the tour for you. The provider put 5 people in a small SUV. I had to sit next to a male I did not know with his thigh right up against mine, it got sweaty and a bit too close for comfort. I couldn't really let down my guard and enjoy the car ride and the scenic views. I was told that there was an option for a larger vehicle (a day into the trip). I would inquire on size of vehicle and if you do not want to squeeze into the SUV, speak to the provider ahead of time about the size of the vehicle.

Our experience with Open Doors Morocco was exceptional. Planning our customized private tour with Nancy was seamless and enjoyable. She provided excellent itinerary suggestions (including cities/accommodations/activities/restaurants) and was prompt and informative while responding to our back and forth communication. We appreciated and respected all of her input. Her planning led to a flawless trip - everything went as planned, with no hiccups. What we will remember most about our trip is our fantastic guide, Nourdine. From the moment he met us at the airport with his warmth and thoughtfulness, we felt at ease and extremely well taken care of. He continually shared his passion and knowledge for Morocco with us which helped us gain a deeper appreciation and understanding for the country. You could tell Nour loves his country and loves his job sharing it with his guests. Nour arrived on-time and always with a smile and we looked forward to spending time with him each day. He ensured we always felt safe and well protected. We loved having Nour by our side for our 10 day trip and by the end we felt like family. We recommend Open Doors Morocco and Nour as a guide - 5 stars! Thank you for a trip of lifetime.

Well planned. Good accommodations. Good variety of things to see. Mohamed was a very good guide. Added interesting stops that were tailored to our likes. Went out of his way to make the trip nice. Felt safe with him. Fes and Marrakesh city guides okay. Food good. Markets great. Sahara desert camel ride and tent sleeping fabulous.
