The city of Santa Marta has a special location, locked in between the mountains of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and the Caribbean Sea. The city was founded in 1525 by the Spaniards, making it the oldest colonial city in South America. Santa Marta is a good starting point for visits to the nearby Parque Tayrona Natural Park and the mountains of the Sierra Nevada, but the city itself is also worth a visit. Stroll through the charming colonial center, visit the estate where freedom fighter Simon Bolívar drew his last breath, and immerse yourself in the local nightlife on the Rodadero city beach. It has many bars with live music.
