This hands-on, immersive experience is designed for photographers who want to push their creative limits while capturing iconic, remote landscapes in all their raw, unfiltered beauty. Whether you're chasing the perfect light, capturing the Milky Way over the dunes, or diving into the nuances of post-processing, this trip will leave you with an incredible portfolio and unforgettable memories.

What’s in Store:

  1. Chasing the Light:
The magic happens at sunrise and sunset. From the golden glow over Death Valley's towering sand dunes and salt flats to the cool, dramatic hues of the Sierra Nevada peaks at dusk, every moment is a photographer’s dream. We’ll chase the light and weather to ensure you’re in the right place at the right time, capturing those once-in-a-lifetime shots.
  2. Reflections and Symmetry:
The salt flats of Death Valley offer a rare opportunity to shoot stunning reflections—especially at dawn when the stillness of the pools creates perfect mirrors. We’ll explore techniques for capturing symmetry and reflections, turning even the simplest shots into captivating works of art.
  3. Macro Magic in the Sierra Nevada:
The rugged grandeur of the Sierra Nevada isn’t just about sweeping vistas; it’s also about the small, intricate details that tell the story of this wild place. Explore macro photography, capturing everything from the textures of wildflowers and tree bark to the delicate patterns of frost on mountain rocks.
  4. Post-Processing Mastery:
Your adventure doesn’t stop at the camera. In addition to shooting, you’ll dive into post-processing workshops designed to enhance your images, turning raw shots into breathtaking works of art. We’ll cover everything from workflow efficiency to advanced editing techniques, ensuring you leave with the skills to bring your photos to life.

Photographing the Amazing Geology of Death Valley

Step into one of the most geologically fascinating places on Earth—Death Valley, where nature’s raw power has sculpted some of the most unique and surreal landscapes in the world. From shifting sand dunes to ancient salt flats, towering rock formations to deep, colorful canyons, this is a photographer’s paradise for capturing the incredible forces of geology at work.

What You’ll Discover:

  1. The Badlands of Death Valley:
The desolate beauty of the badlands is a photographer's dream. With its eroded hillsides, stark ridgelines, and vibrant layers of rock, the badlands provide endless opportunities for dramatic shots. As light and shadow play across the landscape, you’ll capture the intricate textures of rock formations that have been shaped over millions of years.
  2. The Otherworldly Salt Flats:
Badwater Basin, the lowest point in North America, offers a surreal landscape of cracked salt flats that stretch as far as the eye can see. The geometry of the salt polygons, especially at dawn or dusk when the light is soft and ethereal, will take your breath away. We’ll explore how to capture the intricate patterns and dramatic textures, from wide-angle shots to the tiniest details.
  3. Zabriskie Point:
Known for its sweeping views of Death Valley's dramatic terrain, Zabriskie Point is famous for its golden-colored, eroded hills. The light at sunrise and sunset casts long, soft shadows that bring out the striking curves and ridges of the landscape. It’s the perfect location for capturing the essence of Death Valley’s ancient geology.
  4. Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes:
The vast, wind-swept sand dunes of Mesquite Flat are not just beautiful—they’re living, shifting sculptures. The light at dawn transforms the dunes, highlighting the flowing curves of the sand, while the wind constantly reshapes them. These dunes are a perfect place to experiment with composition, using the play of light and shadow to emphasize texture and form.
  5. Devil's Golf Course:
As its name suggests, Devil’s Golf Course is an incredibly jagged and unusual landscape formed by salt crystals and sharp rock formations. The otherworldly textures here are perfect for both wide-angle shots and close-ups that capture the intricate details of salt formations and cracked earth.
  6. Artist’s Palette:
One of Death Valley's most colorful spots, Artist’s Palette is a stunning display of minerals that have turned the hillsides into a painter’s palette of blues, greens, purples, and reds. The hues here are especially vibrant at sunset, when the low angle of the light makes the colors pop and gives the rocks an almost glowing appearance.
  7. Furnace Creek & Golden Canyon:
Explore the ancient geological layers of Golden Canyon, where you can photograph sweeping vistas of layered rock formations in golden and red hues. The interplay of light on these canyon walls, especially in the early morning or late afternoon, highlights the sculptural beauty of this ancient landscape.

Why It’s a Photographer’s Dream:

  • Geological Diversity: From salt flats to sand dunes, canyons to volcanic craters, Death Valley offers an unmatched diversity of geological features. Every corner holds something new and extraordinary for photographers to capture.
  • Unusual Light and Shadows: The ever-changing light in Death Valley brings out the true magic of its geology. The dramatic contrasts of light and shadow—especially during the golden and blue hours—allow you to experiment with different techniques and create striking, dynamic compositions.
  • Timeless Landscapes: These geological formations have been shaped by millions of years of tectonic activity, erosion, and extreme weather. Photographing these places is like capturing a piece of Earth’s history frozen in time—each shot is a testament to the raw, powerful forces that have shaped the planet.

Travel and Accommodations

Las Vegas is home to McCarran International Airport (LAS), which is a 2.5-hour drive from Stovepipe Wells. Los Angeles (LAX) is about a 4.5-hour drive away.

Both hotel and camping accommodations are available for the workshop.

A standard rental vehicle will be sufficient for the workshop, though a high-clearance vehicle may be helpful. Once the workshop begins, we will organize carpools to and from most locations within the park.

Physical Dificulty

There will be no strenuous hiking during the workshop, and most locations will be easily accessible from the road. However, some locations may require a short hike of approximately one mile each way, with minimal elevation gain. Please note that walking in sand dunes can be more strenuous due to the soft, uneven ground. Participants should be able to comfortably carry all their camera equipment for up to 3-4 miles.

We will spend a lot of time outdoors shooting in late winter conditions. Daytime temperatures in the desert during winter can vary significantly. It is essential that participants come prepared for outdoor winter activities, with plenty of warm layers, hats, mittens, good outerwear, and warm boots. A moderate level of health and fitness will greatly enhance your experience.
