Cholula to Cuetzalan — An 8-Day Photography-Focused Cultural Retreat (2026)

This boutique small-group photo retreat is designed for travel and documentary photographers seeking authentic Día de los Muertos traditions in one of Mexico’s most atmospheric regions. The journey begins in San Pedro Cholula (Puebla), your base for exploration, portrait sessions, and festival photography. From there, participants will photograph:

• Puebla City Center — colonial architecture and monumental artistic altars, plus an early cemetery visit for decorated ofrendas and candle-lit scenes.

• Atlixco — the colorful town of flowers, mural art, and vibrant market life.

• Cholula — local altars woven into plazas, churches, and streets, capped by the Catrinas & Catrines community parade on October 31.

• Cuetzalan (Nov 1–2) — the heart of the retreat, where families decorate and honor their loved ones in hillside cemeteries surrounded by fog, candles, marigolds, and indigenous Nahua and Totonaca traditions. You’ll spend two nights here to capture unhurried, soulful cemetery storytelling and portraits.

The final day ends with a smooth transfer from Cholula to CDMX airport for return flights home, following a group photo review and editing session the day prior.

Day 1 — Oct 28, 2026 (Wed) → Arrival + Meet & Greet (Cholula)

• Group meets at hotel in San Pedro Cholula

• Check-in + introductions

• Optional warm-up photo walk around plaza/churches

• Group dinner

• Overnight in Cholula

Day 2 — Oct 29, 2026 (Thu) → Puebla City Center + Cemetery Visit

• Travel to Puebla historic city center

• Shoot: plazas, colonial architecture, and large public altars

• Visit Panteón Municipal de Puebla in the afternoon and early evening (decorated by late October)

• Dinner in centro

• Return to Cholula

• Overnight in Cholula

Day 3 — Oct 31, 2026 (Sat) → Atlixco Photo Day + Cholula Parade at Night

• Morning bus from Cholula → Atlixco

• Shoot: flower markets, murals, colorful streets, altars

• Lunch at local market (not included)

• Visit Panteón Municipal de Atlixco

• Photos at Cerro de San Miguel overlook

• Return to Cholula for the Catrinas & Catrines parade

  • Start ~6PM, runs into night through Calzada Guadalupe → Plaza de la Concordia

• Dinner after parade

• Overnight in Cholula

Day 4 — Nov 1, 2026 (Sun) → Bus to Cuetzalan + Día 1

• Morning departure via local bus company (individual tickets)

• Arrive in Cuetzalan

• Shoot: indigenous altars, family ofrendas, flowers, candles, rituals

• Dinner in town

• Overnight 1 in Cuetzalan

• Night cemetery photography (candles, atmosphere, storytelling portraits)

Day 5 — Nov 2, 2026 (Mon) → Día 2 (Cuetzalan Full Day)

• Sunrise cemetery fog shots + church exteriors

• Continue altars, rituals, candle-lit portraits

• Lunch on your own

• Dinner

• Overnight 2 in Cuetzalan

Day 6 — Nov 3, 2026 (Tue) → Bus Back to Cholula + Photo Review/Edits

• Morning bus back to Cholula

• Group photo review, selects, sequencing, editing

• Group dinner

• Overnight in Cholula

Day 7 — Nov 4, 2026 (Wed) → Checkout + Transfer to CDMX Airport

• Checkout from Cholula

• Transfer Cholula → CDMX airport (~2–2.5 hrs)

• Return flights home
