Its expansion was consolidated after the pandemic, when millions of professionals discovered that they could maintain their productivity from anywhere in the world. The widespread availability of high-speed internet, collaborative platforms, and coworking and coliving spaces has made working while traveling viable, efficient, and socially accepted.

The document describes an initial spontaneous phase, characterized by the absence of regulation and the use of tourist visas, followed by a stage of institutionalization with the creation of specific visas in countries such as Portugal, Spain, Costa Rica, Mexico, Thailand, and Indonesia. These programs seek to attract professionals with external income who spend locally and stimulate economies.

Digital nomadism is transforming traditional tourism: it generates long stays, reduces seasonality, and promotes hybrid models of living and working. However, it also poses challenges such as pressure on housing, gentrification, cultural tensions, and increased demands on infrastructure.

The TSTT concludes that, with balanced and sustainable policies, this phenomenon can become a driver of responsible development and tourism diversification.
