Guided Tour of the Greco-Roman City of Jerash and the Crusaders Castle of Ajloun
Today, you will visit the Crusaders Castle of Ajloun. Built in 1184 AD by Saladin’s general, this castle played a crucial role in protecting and controlling the iron mines of Ajloun. It dominated the main routes of the Crusaders in the Jordan Valley and safeguarded trade routes. Ajloun Castle is a fine example of Islamic architecture, standing 1250 meters above the city on a hilltop. The view from the top is remarkable, offering sights as far as the Dead Sea on clear days.
Later, you will explore the ancient Greco-Roman city of Jerash. After Ajloun, we head east to visit this well-preserved site, which is over 2000 years old. Buried in sand for centuries, Jerash has been excavated and restored over the past 70 years. The guide will walk you through the city's paved and colonnaded streets, hilltop temples, theaters, public squares, baths, fountains, and city walls with gates and towers. Jerash is a prime example of Roman urbanization in the Middle East.
The remainder of your day is at leisure in Amman. You might consider a stroll downtown, relaxing at a coffee shop, mingling with locals, or enjoying a Jordanian dinner at a local restaurant.
Visit the Ancient Baptism Site of John the Baptist and the Dead Sea
Morning Drive to the Baptism Site of John the Baptist: After breakfast and check-out, we will head west from Amman towards the Dead Sea. Our first stop will be the ancient baptism site of John the Baptist. Over 2000 years ago, Jesus was baptized here by John, marking a significant moment in history. Recently rediscovered, this site now attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors annually from various denominations and faiths, all seeking the divine blessings of this holy location.
Continue to the Dead Sea: Following a short drive, we will reach the Dead Sea, the lowest point on earth at 422 meters (1,385 feet) below sea level. Known for its high salinity, over ten times that of the Mediterranean Sea, the Dead Sea has long been renowned as a health retreat. The extreme salt content means no life can survive in the sea, but it allows for effortless floating. You'll spend the afternoon at the beach, enjoying the therapeutic benefits of the Dead Sea's mineral-rich mud.
Drive to Wadi Musa (Petra): After our time at the Dead Sea, we will drive south to the city of Wadi Musa, where the ancient city of Petra is located. We will stay here for two nights.
After breakfast, your guide will take you to Petra, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. This spectacular rose-stone city was built by the Nabataeans, who carved palaces, tombs, temples, and storerooms from the rocky cliffs. You’ll approach Petra through the Siq, a narrow and impressive pathway. Along the way, your guide will point out various carvings that showcase Nabataean culture. At the end of the Siq, you’ll glimpse the stunning Treasury, an extraordinary structure carved into the mountain. As you continue through Petra, you’ll encounter impressive rock-cut tombs, temples, and an amphitheater.
You will have time to explore the rest of the site at your own pace. One monument not to be missed is the Monastery, located on a hill at the far side of Petra. The walk up the steps to the Monastery takes approximately one hour but is highly rewarding, offering breathtaking views from the top of the cliff.
Please note that a considerable amount of walking is required to see all the sites and viewpoints of Petra. There is a restaurant for lunch at the site and small cafes for drinks.
The remainder of your day is at leisure: After your visit to Petra, you will return to the hotel. The rest of your day is free to relax. Consider treating yourself to a spa session at one of Petra’s Turkish baths.
This morning, after checkout, you will head to Little Petra, also known as Al Beidha. Located just a few kilometers from Petra, Little Petra is hidden within a mountain. It served as an important suburb of Petra, acting as the entry and exit point for trade routes to the north and northwest. The site features buildings carved into the sandstone, used as residences, storage, and tombs, along with water channels and cisterns. The sandstone here is whiter than the rose-colored stone of Petra. Walking through this ancient city is a breathtaking reminder of the capabilities and sense of community of its ancient inhabitants.
Enjoy the magnificent desert of Wadi Rum: After visiting Little Petra, you will drive through the extraordinary scenery of Wadi Rum, following in the footsteps of Lawrence of Arabia. Wadi Rum is one of the most beautiful sand dune deserts in the Middle East. This isolated area is home to the Bedouin people and was a base for T.E. Lawrence during the Arab Revolt against the Ottomans in World War I. You will spend the remainder of the day in Wadi Rum and stay overnight in a Bedouin camp, where dinner will be included as part of the desert camping experience.
4x4 Tour: The best way to explore the beauty of Wadi Rum is through a jeep safari. This approximately four-hour 4x4 tour will take you through beautiful rock formations and traces of ancient civilization carved into the mountains. This tour will be a highlight of your trip, offering a chance to see some of the most stunning desert scenery in the world.
After breakfast, we will continue our exploration of Jordan with a drive to the Red Sea port of Aqaba. As Jordan's primary Red Sea resort, Aqaba is a free zone area and a major trading port. It is a popular winter destination for both tourists and Jordanians. Upon arrival in Aqaba, you will check in at your hotel. The remainder of the day is at your leisure.
Free day to enjoy Aqaba: Aqaba offers many ways to enjoy a beautiful day, known for its beaches and excellent snorkeling spots. There are numerous restaurants and cafes serving local cuisine. As a free zone area, Aqaba is also a great place to shop for souvenirs and interact with the locals.
After breakfast, we will head back to Amman for our last night in Jordan. Along the way, we will stop at several historically significant sites.
Trip to the Crusader Castle of Karak: Our first stop will be the town of Kerak to visit the Castle of Karak. Built by King Fulk, the Crusader King of Jerusalem, this castle sits on a hill dominating the town. It was in Crusader hands for only 46 years before being captured by Saladin’s army and converted to Islam. The castle played a crucial role in protecting the caravan route and pilgrimage. Partially restored, the castle features endless passageways and rooms, showcasing the architectural military genius of the Crusaders.
Mt. Nebo: After visiting Karak Castle, we will continue our journey towards Madaba. Before reaching the city, we will stop at Mt. Nebo. This site features a church with well-preserved mosaics set amidst beautiful scenery. The highlight is the breathtaking view from the top of the mountain, the spot where Moses looked out onto the Promised Land.
Madaba: Our next stop is the historical town of Madaba, known for its Ottoman-style houses and Byzantine-era mosaics. The famous 6th-century mosaic map of Jerusalem and the Holy Land at St. George’s Church is a must-see. Other notable mosaics can be found in the Church of the Virgin and the Apostles and the Archaeological Museum, depicting a variety of scenes from mythology and everyday life. Madaba’s churches and homes are adorned with hundreds of other mosaics from the 5th to 7th centuries.
Overnight in Amman.
