Discover the beauty, history, and charm of Portugal on this 9-day, 8-night small-group journey. You'll wander the colorful streets of Lisbon, spend a full day in the fairy-tale hills of Sintra, wind north through Portugal's coastal countryside, and settle into the timeless charm of Porto, with an unforgettable day among the terraced vineyards of the Douro Valley along the way. This is Portugal at its most classic, and its most captivating.
What to Expect:
This retreat blends guided exploration with plenty of time to wander on your own. The pace is active but never rushed, with highlights like a private guided tour of Lisbon's landmarks, a full day in Sintra visiting Pena Palace, a scenic drive north through Óbidos, Batalha, and Coimbra, a half-day Porto tour with a river cruise, an immersive Douro Valley wine tour with lunch among the vines, and a return to Lisbon with a stop in Nazaré and lunch along the way. Every excursion is included, but nothing is mandatory. Your time in Portugal is yours to shape.
Walking & Physical Activity:
Please be prepared to walk at least 2 miles per day, with some days involving additional walking during sightseeing excursions. Portugal is known for its beautiful but uneven cobblestone streets, steep hills, and stairways. Some cobblestones can be particularly slippery, especially when wet, so comfortable, supportive walking shoes with excellent traction and good grip are essential. Shoes with smooth or slippery soles are not recommended.
Guests should have a good, steady gait, adequate balance, and the ability to comfortably navigate uneven cobblestones, hills, and stairs without assistance. Our hotels are conveniently located for exploring, but please expect to walk approximately 10–20 minutes each way to group lunches and dinners.
Walking is an important part of experiencing Portugal, and guests should feel confident walking these distances and navigating uneven surfaces safely. If you prefer not to walk to a meal, taxis or ride-share services are generally available at your own expense.
Accommodations & Inclusions:
Stay in beautifully located hotels, including the Hyatt Regency Lisbon, the Arts Hotel Porto, and the Andaz Lisbon. All private transfers, transportation between Lisbon and Porto, and the excursions listed above are included, along with a farewell dinner in Lisbon featuring an authentic Fado performance. The full inclusions list appears later in this itinerary.

A note before you start packing: One of the best things you can do to make this trip easier on yourself is to pack light. Private transfers work best when everyone is moving efficiently, so we ask that each traveler bring one suitcase and one personal item such as a backpack. You will find that with a little planning you can pack everything you need and still have room for a souvenir or two. The lists below will help you do exactly that.
Travel Essentials:
Passport (valid at least six months beyond your travel dates) and ID, flight confirmations, hotel and transfer confirmations, travel insurance documents, credit and debit cards along with a small amount of euros, your phone and charger, a European power adapter (Type C/F, 230V), a small daypack or crossbody bag for daily excursions, and a reusable water bottle.
Clothing:
Lightweight tops and blouses (5-7), comfortable pants or jeans (2-3), shorts or a skirt (optional, 2), a casual dress or two (optional), a lightweight sweater or cardigan for cooler evenings, a light jacket, and a compact rain jacket or umbrella for the occasional shower, especially in northern Portugal. Include a dressier outfit or two for our farewell dinner in Lisbon, along with comfortable walking shoes for Portugal's beautiful but uneven cobblestone streets, plus a casual pair for evenings.
Toiletries:
Toothbrush, toothpaste and floss, shampoo, conditioner and body wash (hotels provide basics, but bring your own if you're particular), deodorant, hairbrush, skincare including moisturizer and sunscreen SPF 30 or higher, makeup if desired, razor and shaving supplies, contact lenses or glasses, travel-size hand sanitizer, and prescription medications in their original packaging, enough for the full trip.
Extras and Travel Comfort:
A travel journal or notebook, a guidebook or offline map app, a camera or smartphone, chargers and a portable power bank, earbuds or headphones, light reading material or an e-reader, snacks for travel days, and a foldable tote bag, handy for the Douro Valley if you pick up a bottle or two.
Optional Items:
A small travel first aid kit with pain relievers, motion sickness medication and bandages, a swimsuit if you'd like to use the hotel pool or spa, a light evening clutch or small bag for our group dinners, sunglasses and a sun hat for the wine country afternoons, and a travel pillow or eye mask for your flight home.
Packing Tips:
Portugal's cobblestone streets are charming but tough on new shoes, so break yours in before you go. Days run warm and evenings cool off, especially in Porto and the Douro Valley, so a couple of layers serve you better than heavy items. Pack a light rain layer just in case, particularly for the days we're in the north. Stick to a few neutral colors so everything mixes and matches, which also leaves more suitcase room for wine from the Douro Valley.
1. Weather and Clothing
June is one of the best months to visit Portugal, with warm, sunny days, long daylight hours, and generally pleasant temperatures before the peak summer heat and crowds of July and August. Lisbon typically enjoys daytime highs in the mid-70s to low 80s°F (24–28°C), with evenings cooling into the upper 50s to low 60s°F (14–17°C). Porto is slightly cooler, with daytime highs in the upper 60s to mid-70s°F (20–24°C) and evenings in the mid-to-upper 50s°F (13–16°C). Porto can experience occasional showers, although June is generally much drier than spring. The Douro Valley, further inland, is typically warmer and sunnier, with daytime temperatures ranging from the mid-70s to upper 80s°F (24–31°C). Pack lightweight summer clothing, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a sunhat, along with a light sweater or jacket for cooler evenings. A compact umbrella or lightweight rain jacket is also worth bringing, especially for Porto. Comfortable, broken-in walking shoes are essential, as Lisbon, Porto, Óbidos, and Sintra are known for their hills, uneven sidewalks, and cobblestone streets.
2. Money and Currency
Portugal uses the euro. For cash, use Multibanco ATMs (look for the MB symbol), preferably attached to Portuguese banks, and avoid independent machines such as Euronet, which may charge higher fees. When an ATM or card reader asks whether to charge you in euros or US dollars, always choose euros to avoid unfavorable currency conversion rates. A currency app like XE is handy for checking prices. Tipping is modest and generally appreciated rather than required: 5–10% at restaurants for good service, €10–20 per person for a full day with our private guides, €5–10 per person for drivers, and €2–5 per day for hotel housekeeping.
3. Financial Safety
Split your cash and cards between a couple of places rather than carrying everything in one wallet. Check your bank's international transaction policies before traveling and ensure your contact information is current in case of a fraud alert. Stick to ATMs attached to bank branches whenever possible. If accessing sensitive information on public Wi-Fi, consider using a VPN. Keep your passport secured at your hotel when appropriate and carry a photocopy or digital image while sightseeing.
4. Personal Safety
Portugal consistently ranks among the world's safest countries, and Lisbon and Porto are generally welcoming and comfortable cities for travelers. However, petty theft and pickpocketing can occur in crowded tourist areas, particularly on Lisbon's famous Tram 28, Tram 15 to Belém, and around popular viewpoints and busy squares. Keep bags zipped and valuables secure, especially on public transportation. June brings more visitors and lively outdoor activity, so expect some popular attractions to be busy. The emergency number throughout Portugal is 112.
5. Transportation
Getting between destinations on this trip is handled for you. Our private driver takes the group from Lisbon to Porto with stops in Óbidos, Batalha, and Coimbra along the way, and a private transfer brings everyone back to Lisbon with a stop in Nazaré and lunch along the way. Within Lisbon and Porto, walking is one of the best ways to explore the historic centers, although both cities have steep hills and cobblestone streets. Taxis and ride-share services such as Uber and Bolt are widely available if you prefer not to walk. June is a popular travel month, so allow a little extra time for traffic around major attractions.
6. Sightseeing and Excursions
Our guided excursions, including Lisbon highlights, Sintra's Pena Palace, the Porto river cruise, and the Douro Valley wine tour, are all included, but participation is always optional. June is an especially beautiful time to explore Portugal, with green vineyards, blooming flowers, outdoor cafés, and plenty of sunshine. Pena Palace is extremely popular during the summer, so having a private guide and advance arrangements is especially helpful. In Porto, the famous Livraria Lello bookstore requires a timed ticket booked in advance. June also brings festive celebrations, particularly Lisbon's Santo António festivities around June 12–13 and Porto's São João celebrations around June 23–24, featuring music, street parties, and traditional food. Depending on our travel dates, you may experience some of these wonderful local traditions.
7. Dining and Cuisine
June is a fantastic time to enjoy Portugal's outdoor dining culture, fresh seafood, and seasonal specialties. Don't leave without trying pastéis de nata, fresh grilled sardines, bacalhau (Portugal's beloved salt cod), and a glass of Port or Douro Valley wine. Grilled sardines are especially popular during June's traditional festivals. Our group dinners are already reserved, and if you're dining independently, advance reservations are recommended at popular restaurants, particularly those with outdoor terraces or river views. Tipping is modest, and rounding up or leaving 5–10% for excellent service is plenty.
8. Health and Comfort
June brings stronger sunshine and warmer afternoons, particularly in Lisbon and the Douro Valley. Bring a reusable water bottle and stay hydrated throughout the day, especially during walking tours and vineyard visits. Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat are highly recommended. A small first aid kit with pain relievers, bandages, blister protection, and motion sickness medication can be helpful. Keep prescription medications in their original packaging. If you're sensitive to heat, lightweight, breathable clothing will make sightseeing more comfortable.
9. Packing and Luggage
Pack lightweight, breathable summer clothing that can easily be layered. Dresses, shorts, casual pants, comfortable tops, and a light cardigan or jacket are ideal for June. Bring at least one slightly dressier outfit for dinners or wine tastings. Comfortable walking shoes with good traction are especially important for Portugal's cobblestone streets. A small daypack or crossbody bag is useful for excursions, along with sunscreen, sunglasses, and a reusable water bottle. Packing cubes and versatile clothing can help keep luggage manageable throughout the trip.
10. Technology and Communication
Portugal operates on 230V electricity with Type C and Type F plugs, so bring an appropriate European adapter. Most modern phones, laptops, and chargers support dual voltage, but check your devices before traveling. Download offline Google Maps and a translation app before departure. While English is widely spoken in tourist areas, learning a few Portuguese phrases is always appreciated. Keep digital copies of your passport, travel insurance, and important documents accessible offline.
11. Mindset and Enjoyment
June is a wonderful time to slow down and experience Portugal at its best. Enjoy long, sunny evenings, leisurely outdoor meals, scenic river views, and beautiful countryside landscapes. With daylight lasting until approximately 9 PM, there is plenty of time to explore without feeling rushed. Our itinerary balances guided sightseeing with opportunities to relax and enjoy each destination at your own pace. Whether you're sipping coffee in Lisbon's Alfama neighborhood, enjoying a glass of wine overlooking the Douro River, or wandering Porto's charming streets, remember that some of the best travel memories happen in the unplanned moments. Relax, embrace the Portuguese way of life, and enjoy every minute of this wonderful adventure!
