Join Blue Planet for a long weekend of exciting diving in Bimini. Escape the cold and enjoy all this laid back Bahamian island has to offer. And don't forget your underwater camera: the highlight of this trip will be the opportunity to dive with sharks and wild dolphins!
Bimini, approximately 50 miles east of the Miami/Fort Lauderdale coastline, is the closest island in the Bahamas to the US mainland. Perched at the edge of a sheer underwater cliff that falls thousands of feet into the blue abyss, it is an oasis for wildlife. The Gulf Stream rushes north, washing past Bimini, feeding and warming its coral reefs and serving as a watery highway for everything from marlin to manta rays, dolphin to sea turtles. And during the winter months, Great Hammerhead Sharks!
Minimum dive certification/experience: Open Water Diver. Beginners will feel comfortable at many of the protected reefs, but the Gulf Stream, which travels past Bimini, can create fast-paced drifts more suitable to advanced divers. We will select sites with the dive operator based on everyone's experience level.
In Bimini, colorful coral reefs, sheer walls, shallow wrecks and caverns produce a variety of dive types including night dives, drift dives, easy reef dives and tec dives. Of course, this part of the Bahamas is most famous for its shark dives.
Many scuba divers who are attracted to Bimini come to see the sharks. During the winter and spring months, you’re likely to see hammerhead sharks, bull sharks, Caribbean reef sharks, silky sharks, oceanic whitetip sharks and the occasional tiger shark. Dolphins often show up to investigate both divers and their boats. And pilot whales, humpback whales and sperm whales can be seen when traveling to open ocean dive sites. Green turtles, hawksbill turtles, leatherback turtles and eagle rays swim along the current while seahorses, Bahama sea stars, queen conches and hordes of tropical fish hide amongst the colorful coral reefs.
There’s plenty to keep you occupied top side as well. Explore the island on a bike, take a kayak or paddle board for a spin or just relax on the beach.
