Join us in one of the Caribbean’s best keep secrets! Dominica is absolutely stunning both above water and below: green rainforest-covered mountains drop down to gorgeous pristine reefs. Between the diving, whale watching, hiking and other topside adventures, this is one trip you won’t forget.
Known as “The Nature Island,” Dominica sits midway along the Eastern Caribbean archipelago, just a few miles from Martinique to the south and Guadeloupe to the north. Tropical rainforests cover two thirds of the island and are home to 1,200 plant species. This volcanic island is still actively evolving with continuous geothermal activity.
The island is currently regulating its COVID-19 protocols by requiring tourists to participate in the Safe in Nature managed tourism experience. This directs divers and non-divers alike, to stay with COVID-19 Certified properties and operators, which are regulated and certified by the Environmental Health Department of Dominica.
Minimum dive certification/experience: Perfect for beginners. A great spot to complete your Open Water Diver certification, Advanced Open Water Diver and more. No large boats here! A tailored experience is what Dominica is known for, and the chances of seeing other dive boats or groups on the same site as you is almost unheard of!
The underwater topography of Dominica mirrors the beautiful landscape above: massive underwater boulder fields and volcanic craters accompany steep walls and pinnacles, setting the stage for some of the best diving in the Caribbean. And it’s macro heaven! Encounter seahorses, frogfish, flying gurnards and other species rarely found in other Caribbean diving destinations. Huge stands of coral and sponges are home to golden crinoids with feathery, radiating arms. Batfish, electric rays, Caribbean reef squid, and sea urchins add to Dominica’s list of undersea inhabitants.
Conditions underwater are very typical of other more popular Caribbean destinations. Water temperature is usually in the high 70s to low 80s and visibility ranges from 50 to upwards of 100 feet. While currents do exist on some dive sites, the majority of the time spend underwater will be within the protection of the island itself - offering calm surface conditions that translate to relaxing, easy diving.
There’s plenty to keep you occupied top side as well. Watch sperm whales swim just off shore, hike through rainforests to swim below waterfalls, relax in natural hot springs and so much more. Kick back by the pool and look for rainbows (seriously, you see them all the time). Or maybe take a yoga class before visiting the hotel's spa.
Nestled on the hills of Morne Acouma Soufrière, the eco villas of this resort all have one of the best views on the island: overlooking the Scotts Head Marine Sanctuary. Redefining what a luxury eco-conscious resort can be, Jungle Bay was built and upgraded over the years with sustainability and the preservation of Dominica in mind. This was accomplished by using guidelines set forth by National Geographic’s Center for Sustainable Destinations and The International Ecotourism Society (TIES). The primary mission if this resort is to improve the island's natural environment as well as the livelihood of surrounding communities.
You should plan to fly into Dominica's Douglas-Charles (DOM) airport on April 3. From there, it's an adventurous couple hour's ride south, across the island, to the resort. You can fly home at any time on April 10.
International flights from the U.S. can be tricky -- some U.S. carriers have code share agreements with the local Caribbean airlines so your bags get checked all the way through. However you may find it's less expensive to fly into San Juan, Puerto Rico (SJU) the day before and then take a local carrier into Dominica. There's also a ferry that runs from Martinique and/or Guadeloupe directly into Roseau.
