      About this trip

An easy day birding along roadsides, park paths and lake overlooks looking for a selection of waterfowl. Weather may be cold and windy - warm clothing and comfortable footwear are recommended.

Does duck identification leave you cold? If so, join us for a day out in central North Carolina as we visit several of the area’s lakes and ponds for ducks and other waterfowl. Winter is by far the best time of the year for waterfowl here in the Piedmont and most of the birds should be in their full breeding colors in anticipation of the upcoming breeding season. Males are the most distinctively marked of the sexes and the easiest to identify, but we shall spend time deciphering the cryptic plumages of those look-alike females as well as the tricky domestic waterfowl species. We will also examine their structure, biology and improve our identification skills.

Should the weather be very cold and the lakes begin to freeze over, many of the ducks and geese will move to larger areas of open water, such as Harris Lake in New Hill. Some impressive concentrations of our regularly wintering waterfowl have occurred under these conditions. Our exact itinerary will depend on weather conditions and area waterfowl reports, but we will spend most of our efforts at hotspots around Wake and possibly Chatham County. Species seen varies with each trip, but we hope to see all or a selection of the following: Wood Duck, Mallard, Gadwall, American Wigeon, Green-winged Teal, Northern Shoveler, Northern Pintail, Canada Goose, Bufflehead, Hooded Merganser, Ring-necked Duck, Redhead, Lesser Scaup, and Ruddy Duck. Local rarities have included: Common Goldeneye, Greater Scaup, and Snow, Ross’s and Greater White-fronted Geese

Terrific birding trip. We had a beautiful chilly morning at Kituwah Farm for birding and even elk viewing. The afternoon at Lake Junaluska was really nice with many water fowl and bald eagles! Loved it. Our guide, Vicky, was very knowledgeable, thoughtful, and fun.

Great Trip.! Vicky was amazing at finding us birds. She is knowledgeable, friendly and helpful, making sure that everyone in the group saw the bird. Kituwah Farm is an interesting place with the Native American history and the elk! Lake Junaluska is a charming community nestled in a valley surrounded by the mountains. There were many ducks there, and Vicky made sure we got to see them all! I would do this trip again.

We did have a great time! The weather was great, a little cool to start with but it warmed up nicely. We saw a variety of birds during the day, including a vesper sparrow, and TWO BALD EAGLES at their nest!!!!! All with the help of our guide, Vickie. I have nothing but good things to say. I recommend birding day trips to beginners, as well as more experienced birders. Thank you

I loved this trip! Mostly have traveled the Gulf Coast of Florida, so this was a pleasant surprise. We got all our trip birds. I got 7 lifers! This was a beautiful, marshy area, with plenty of birds. Aaron was our guide. He knows his birds! He is professional and accommodating, and he took us to amazing places. He always found us great food to eat! I would do this trip again! Liz H.
