About this trip

Explore the Suffolk coastline whist learning to sail in our lovely old lady, Excelsior. Lowestoft has a rich history in the fishing and boat building industries while Ipswich was a significant trading port and has the local architecture to match. Join the crew to sail close to the wind turbines to take in their vastness, admire the nationally important and protected landscape, be among the small leisure craft and enjoy a truly panoramic view of famous coastal towns of Aldeburgh and Southwold, for a picturesque view in all directions. In a short stretch, there's a lot to see, so bring your binoculars!

Nose into coves and interesting bays as you take the slow way to Ipswich and discover the beauty and wildlife on and around this region. The River Orwell is a pretty perfect location for bird watchers and those who like to admire the Suffolk landscape.

You should plan to be in Lowestoft, either Heritage Quay, South Pier, or Excelsior Yard, Harbour Road by 10am on the Friday and we'll be in Ipswich Beacon Marina around 4pm on Sunday.

With all our trips, we reserve the right to cancel no later than -10 days if we are unable to fill enough berths. Full refunds will be given.

What you'll be doing

As part of Excelsior's crew, you'll be taught everything you need to know; literally learning the ropes to hoisting and dropping sails, and trimming for the wind direction. Helming to a course is part of the adventure and you can learn the basics of navigation using paper and digital charts to plan a passage and plot your progress and completing the hourly log. Working in watches, you'll be given responsibilities including cooking, cleaning, being on deck and time for sleeping if you're to be sailing through the night.
