Pray Jumu'ah in Kairouan, walk the medinas of Sousse and Tunis, watch the sun set over Sidi Bou Said, and stand inside one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheatres in the world.
For five nights, we’ll base ourselves at a 4-star beachfront resort in Sousse, with breakfast and dinner included, and use it as a base for exploring Kairouan, Tunis, Carthage, Sidi Bou Said, Monastir, El Jem and Mahdia.
The trip is designed for young British Muslim professionals, with most travellers joining solo or with a friend. You’ll be added to the group chat and invited to a pre-trip call before departure, so you’ll already know a few faces before you land.
You stay in one hotel for the whole trip, so there’s no constant packing or changing accommodation. Every day starts and ends in Sousse, and there are free evenings built in so the week still feels like a holiday rather than a checklist.
Islamic history runs through the itinerary: Jumu'ah in Kairouan, Dhuhr at the Zitouna Mosque, the ribats of Sousse and Monastir, and the Fatimid history of Mahdia. It sits alongside good food, coffee, the coast, Roman history and time to relax.
You do not need to be especially religious or know the history beforehand. Prayer times are planned into the days, but this is a cultural group trip rather than a religious retreat.
One hotel
We stay at the same beachfront resort in Sousse for all five nights.
That means no changing hotels every couple of days, no repeated check-ins and no living out of a suitcase.
Small group
The trip is limited to a maximum of 15 paying travellers, alongside the Evliya team.
That keeps the group social and makes the days easier to manage than a large coach tour.
Muslim heritage
You’ll experience Jumu'ah in Kairouan, Dhuhr at Zitouna Mosque and the Islamic heritage of Sousse, Monastir and Mahdia. But the trip also includes Sidi Bou Said, El Jem, coastal towns, food and free evenings.
Thoughtful pacing
There is only one longer road day. The rest of the itinerary is built around shorter journeys from Sousse, with enough time for meals, prayer, coffee and actually enjoying the places we visit.
Support throughout
Two Evliya group leaders will accompany the group throughout, providing both male and female points of contact.
Built from experience
Evliya Travels has hosted more than 100 travellers across destinations including Morocco, Bosnia, Spain, Albania and Saudi Arabia. We build each trip around what previous travellers tell us matters most: good company, comfortable accommodation, sensible pacing, strong local guides and enough time to enjoy the destination properly.
Our groups are mainly made up of young British Muslim professionals, with a mix of men and women. Most people join alone.
If you book the shared-room option, we will pair you with a same-gender roommate. You do not need to find someone to travel with.
The trip is designed to make it easy to settle in, meet people naturally and still have space to do your own thing when you want to.
You’ll stay for five nights at Marhaba Salem, a 4-star beachfront resort in Sousse.
The hotel is set within landscaped gardens with direct beach access, pools, spa facilities and plenty of space to relax after a day out.
Your stay is half board, with both breakfast and dinner included every day.
Breakfast and dinner are served in the hotel’s main restaurant, with a varied buffet combining Tunisian specialities and international dishes. The resort also has a traditional Moorish café and other spaces to relax in the evenings.
This means that on most days you can return from the programme, have dinner at the hotel and then enjoy the rest of the evening at your own pace.
Some evenings are deliberately left free, giving you time to enjoy the resort, walk along the seafront or spend time with the rest of the group.
December in Sousse is mild rather than hot, so think coastal walks, cafés and fresh evenings rather than a beach holiday.

Land in Enfidha at 13:00 and transfer to Sousse, around 40 minutes away. After checking in and having time to settle into the hotel, we’ll head out for a relaxed first look at the city, walking through the Medina and along the seafront. We’ll pray Maghrib together, then return to the hotel for our first dinner as a group. The evening is intentionally light so everyone can arrive, meet each other and ease into the trip without feeling rushed.
We start the morning in Sousse, exploring the Medina, Great Mosque and Ribat, with a local guide bringing to life the city’s role in early Muslim North Africa and the chain of coastal forts that once protected the region. After lunch and Dhuhr, we drive around 25 minutes to Monastir for its Ribat and seafront. We’ll take time to enjoy the coast before heading back to Sousse. After dinner at the hotel, the evening is free to relax, head out for a coffee or spend time with the group.
This is the week’s one longer day. We leave Sousse early and head north to Tunis, starting in the historic Medina with its souqs, architecture and religious heritage before praying Dhuhr at the Zitouna Mosque.
After lunch, we continue to the Archaeological Site of Carthage for a focused visit to some of the key remains of the ancient city, bringing in a different layer of Tunisia’s history.
From there, it is a short drive to Sidi Bou Said, where the pace slows down. There will be time to walk through the blue-and-white streets, stop for coffee and take in the views over the Mediterranean.
We stay for sunset and Maghrib before returning to Sousse in the evening.
Friday is centred around Kairouan, one of the most important historic cities of the Muslim Maghreb. We’ll pray Jumu'ah at the Great Mosque of Uqba ibn Nafi before continuing through the city’s wider Islamic heritage. The day includes the Zawiya of Abu Zama'a al-Balawi, the tomb of Imam Sahnun, the Aghlabid Basins and the Medina. We’ll also make time for one of Kairouan’s best-known specialities, fresh makroudh from the old bakeries, before heading back to Sousse for Maghrib and dinner.
We begin the day at El Jem, where you can stand inside one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheatres in the world and get a very different side of Tunisia’s history. From there, we continue to Mahdia, once the capital of the Fatimid caliphate. We’ll explore the Great Mosque, Skifa el Kahla and the Medina before slowing things down with a seafood lunch by the port. After Asr, we return to Sousse for Maghrib and dinner, with the final evening left free.
After a final breakfast at the hotel, we check out and leave Sousse at around 08:45 for Enfidha Airport. The recommended easyJet flight departs at 12:00 and arrives back at London Gatwick at 14:15.
