About your trip

This is a 5 day/6 night (7 days in total to include arrival and departure days) self guided walk along the Peddars Way National Trail.  This will be organised by Explore Norfolk UK, so all you have to do is turn up and enjoy the peace and quiet along this historical countryside trail.

Pricing and deposit are per person.

Highlights

The Peddars Way is an historic Roman road.  Follow in the footsteps of the Romans from the middle of Knettishall Heath which is just outside Thetford, all the way to the North Norfolk Coast. On the way you'll come across priory and castle ruins, ancient woodland , heathland and arrow straight Roman roads, as well as old burial mounds and ice age pingo ponds.   This is a really peaceful wonderful walk.

The other highlight on this particular 5 day package is the accommodation that you stay in on your second night.  This is a 14th century farmhouse that was originally built as a College for Priests.  With a wonderful owner, and a home cooked evening meal, you won't want to leave this B&B!  The price therefore includes one evening meal.  If you would like a slightly cheaper option, please contact me.

Length of the walk

The official Peddars Way trail is 46 miles which stops at Holme-next-the-Sea, but as there is no accommodation here, you need to continue to walk to Hunstanton, so you will be walking approximately 49 miles.  However, with the extra mileage to and from the path, the whole walk is about 52 miles.  This is a 5 days walking trip

All the mileage below includes walking to and from the path where necessary.

Day 1 - 10.5 miles/16.9 km

Day 2 - 14.8 miles/23.8 km

Day 3 - 13.5 miles/21.7 km

Day 4 - 15.4 miles/24.7 km

Day 5 - 9-11 miles/14.4 - 17.7 km(depending on how you walk back to re-join the path)

Arrive in Thetford

If browsing this on a laptop, look to your right for further details and photos of the walk.

You'll arrive in historic town of Thetford as this is the nearest town to the start of the walk.

Day 1 Walk

Day 1 Walk image

11 miles/17.7 km walking from Knettishall Heath to Thompson

This stretch of the Peddars Way starts in a pretty wood on the outskirts of Thetford and takes you across open countryside, pine forests, deciduous woods, along farm tracks and ancient Pingo ponds and the edge of MOD training zones. It’s an extremely peaceful stretch of the walk unless you have the gun fire from the army!

Day 2 walk

Day 2 walk image

14.8 miles/23.8 km - walking from Thompson to Swaffham

Mileage includes approx 2 miles off the path to Swaffham

Once through the woodlands and open countryside, much of this walk is on very quiet lanes.  Arrive in the Georgian town of Swaffham for your overnight stay.

Day 3 Walk

Day 3 Walk image

13.5 miles/21.7 km - walking from Swaffham to Gt Massingham

Mileage includes 2 miles from Swaffham back to the path.

As you approach Castle Acre from the south, look out for the amazing ruins of Castle Acre Priory which you’ll see from the road. You might like to stop and visit if you have time, or wander around the castle ruins which are on the right hand side as you walk up the main street towards the Bailey Gate.  You continue through Castle Acre with a it of road walking and tracks until you come off the path to the pretty village of Gt Massingham.

Day 4 walk

Day 4 walk image

15.4 miles/24.7 km - walking from Castle Acre to Sedgeford

This mileage includes walking to and from the path to/from the accommodation.

This day is the hilliest part of the walk (!), it does involve a little bit more road walking, but then you're on to quiet tracks all the way to Gt Massingham.  From here you walk along some extremely straight tracks, as well as open landscape in the form of heathland, past ancient burial grounds to arrive in Sedgeford, the village full of flint stone and pan tiled cottages!

Day 5 Walk

Day 5 Walk image

9-11 miles/14.4-17.7 km - walking from Sedgeford to Hunstanton

Slightly different mileage depending on which way you re-join the Peddars Way.

Very much a straight walk from here to Ringstead over undulating countryside and long straight tracks again until you head down towards the sea at Holme and on to Hunstanton.

About your organizer

I'm Suzy Watson, and I established Explore Norfolk UK in 2013. This covers walking and cycling holidays. As I was walking along a stretch of the Norfolk Coast Path and being stunned by its beauty yet again, I suddenly realised just what I could offer visitors to Norfolk. Then a cycling route came along so I did the same for this! So, as well as living in Norfolk, I am here to give you the opportunity to book a fantastic and memorable Norfolk walking or cycling holiday through Explore Norfolk UK, a truly Norfolk business.
