From the airport we take on the open road, we head out on the N4 heading East. Once past the main coal mines that power South Africa’s electricity grid, we turn North-east towards the small town of Dullstroom. We stop for an early lunch at the Dullstroom Inn in front of a log fire that has been kept burning for more than 20 years. Dullstroom lies above 2 500 metres above sea level and is a hotspot for trout fishing and mountain biking.
From here we travel the well-known Panorama Route. We stop to visit the Bourke’s Luck Potholes (natural potholes formed where the Blyde and Treur Rivers’ meet) and the Three Rondavels Viewpoint (Blyde River Canyon – said to be the third biggest canyon in the world). From here we start to descend from the Highveld to the Lowveld and the difference in vegetation and climate is clear to experience. We drop to an average of 500 metres above sea level and immediately start encountering private game reserves along the road.
Our destination for the next two nights is the wonderful Sabie River Bush Lodge situated right on the Sabie River and overlooking the Kruger National Park. We arrive at the hotel and settle in before enjoying our dinner on the terrace.
