About this trip

A Memorable Trip throughout Northern Ireland

Explore the culture and history of Northern Ireland on this unique small-group tour to the Emerald Isle. We’ll also visit gardens, manor homes and generally enjoy nature in this less-visited corner of Ireland.

As our home base for this trip, we will stay in the Blackhead Cutter lighthouse and its lighthouse keeper’s houses. This group of historic buildings lies just 45 minutes from Belfast, perched on a high bluff overlooking the sea. It is an astounding setting and also centrally located for easy access to so much in Ireland.

We’ll drive the Causeway Costal Route, visiting the Giants Causeway, visit a distillery, walk though castles, both rehabilitated and in ruins. A day in Belfast will include the Ulster Museum, the Titanic Museum, and botanic gardens.

In the evening we’ll seek out live, traditional Irish music at some local pubs.

Sample Itinerary

Here is a tentative list of activities for this trip through Northern Ireland:

  • The Gobbins walking path on the coast
  • Drive the Causeway Costal Route
  • Ulster Museum
  • Titanic Museum
  • Botanic Gardens in Belfast
  • Tollymore Forest Park
  • Castle Visits
  • Giant’s Causeway
  • Glenariff Forest Park
  • Old Bushmills Distillery
  • Portstewart Strand
  • Ards Peninsula
  • Hillsborough Castle

Where we will stay

We will occupy a lighthouse and its two lighthouse keepers’ houses that sit high up on a bluff overlooking the sea. It is hard to imagine a more breathtaking location.

These historic properties have been painstakingly restored by the Irish Landmark Trust.

Because of the historic nature of these buildings, the room configuration is not what you’d expect from a Hilton or Holiday Inn. There are 8 rooms in total and between them they share 3 bathrooms and 2 separate shower rooms.

While in theory these lodgings sleep 15, we will not have a large number of people on this trip. This is due to the number who wish to have single rooms. So we expect there to be just 8-10 participants for this visit to Northern Ireland.

Traveling can be stressful, but we take the worry out of travel by handling all the hard bits for you. We do the planning, book the hotels, and reserve your restaurant. We know the villages to visit, the vineyards to tour, and the cooking classes to attend. We set all this up for you. Then we make your trip easy. First we pick you up at the airport in a small van and whisk you to your hotel. We travel with you from place to place, from activity to activity, and finally deliver you back to the airport for your flight home.

This trip exceeded my expectations!! Both Mimi, our "cultural guide", and Roberto, our Spanish teacher, were perfect for this experience, and did a masterful job of collaborating to meet the needs of everyone in the group. The whole was delightful and very comfortable, including the pool and patio, a welcome oasis on warm sunny afternoons! The cultural experiences were exceptional, and really made me want to experience more of this very special region and its' people. And the food in Oaxaca was fabulous. It'll be hard to enjoy American-style "Mexican food".

For me, this trip will be up there with "one-of-lifetime" beautiful experiences, because it was well organized, with a tone of flexibility. Every single one of the daily excursions was fascinating, enjoyable and interesting,. I felt taken care of, and I won't forget to mention the increase of conversing in Spanish with more confidence..

I had a great experience! Loved getting acquainted with Oaxaca, meeting new people and making new friends. The program was well balanced with class time, places of local interest---visiting Teotilain Del Valle, was one of my favs, it I HAD to choose. I thought there was a good amount of time to explore on our own and I felt very safe. Monte Alban was also, amazing. Good choices for eatting out with the group. Mimi and Roberto worked well together--and I would add that in my case, as the week progressed, I found it harder to keep up with the pace and could have use a bit more translation to English. Having said that, I still got so much out of speaking in class and outside of class---I was a bit out of my comfort zone, but that's not a criticism--it has pushed me to want to continue to learn and speak the language. Thank you Bob and Cicely for a great experience, I appreciate all the work that was done to prepare us for a great adventure! -Gloria

My Spanish improved when i wasn't looking. How did that happen? Delicious dinners every night. Great to be with a small group.

What a fabulous trip! Cicely, Bob and Bev are the greatest guides, they gave us all such a well rounded experience in Provence. Thank you for making my first introduction to France an experience I will always cherish. Merci beaucoup
