Experience the Wasatch at peak aspen season while learning how to capture the color, light, and atmosphere of fall in the mountains. We'll explore how changing light affects foliage, how to create stronger landscape compositions, what to look for when photographing fall color, and how to better anticipate peak foliage in future seasons.

Experience Level

All photography levels are welcome, from beginners learning their cameras to experienced photographers looking to develop their landscape skills in the field.

Equipment

Any camera is welcome, including DSLR, mirrorless, or other cameras with manual controls. Bring the lenses you're most comfortable using; a wide-angle or standard zoom is especially useful for landscapes.

A tripod is optional but may be helpful as we approach sunset.

What to Bring

Late September in the Wasatch can bring a wide range of conditions, and temperatures can cool quickly as the sun goes down. Please bring comfortable hiking shoes and layers appropriate for changing fall weather.

Bring water and a headlamp or flashlight for the hike back after sunset. A small backpack is recommended for carrying camera gear and personal items.

Physical Demands

Participants should be prepared to walk approximately 2 miles round trip over generally mild terrain, with some moderate inclines. We'll stop frequently to photograph and discuss techniques along the way.

Meeting Location & Parking

We'll meet at Silver Lake at Brighton in front of the recreation center. The workshop begins promptly at 5:00 PM, so please arrive 5–10 minutes early.

Parking fees are required in the Silver Lake parking areas. If you have an America the Beautiful Pass, you may display it on your dashboard in place of paying the parking fee.

Weather

This is a field workshop, and changing weather is part of photographing in the mountains! Light rain or overcast conditions will not automatically cancel the workshop and can create beautiful conditions for photographing fall color.

If weather or other conditions make the workshop unsafe or impractical, registered participants will be contacted regarding rescheduling or other options.
