Whether you're brand new to jiu jitsu or a seasoned mat warrior, Fright Fest welcomes girls and women from all ages and experience levels for a weekend packed with playful scares, empowering training, and unforgettable camp magic.

What is Fright Fest?

Fright Fest is our annual Spooktacular Girls Grappling Camp in Syracuse, NY. For years, Grappling Getaways has built an impeccable reputation for hosting Halloween-themed camps to provide top notch training mixed with Halloween excursions, activities and celebrations. Last year, in an attempt to make this experience affordable for everyone, we hosted our first large scale Halloween Camp, and the number of women in participation was truly mind-blowing with a staggering 80 women registering for camp. The festival includes vendors, on site-services and a full itinerary. Just for being in attendance each person receives raffle tickets where last year we raffled off prizes every hour on the hour including gis, rashguards, baskets and more!

When, Where, & for who is Fright Fest for?

Fright Fest is scheduled for Friday, October 9 - Sunday, October 11th. Fright Fest will be held at Vien Jiu Jitsu. The address is 1 Thermold Dr. , Manlius, NY 13104. This event is open to all women aged 12+. All skill levels are welcome.

Jiu Jitsu training will be split into equal sessions of Gi and No gi. Per usual, Black Belts Katie Hooven and April Parks will be leading the instruction alongside a guest instructor TBA - coming soon.

Total time on the mat ranges from 8-12 hours in the 3 days of camp. You may participate in as much or as little as you like. There will also be time built in for you to connect with the instructors 1:1 as well as a general Q&A.

Camp HQ: Vien Jiu Jitsu in Manlius, NY.

There is ample parking for all vehicles, although we always encourage a road trip and carpooling because it's just fun! There are 7 showers on site with 4 restrooms, locker room, drinking fountain and storage space.

Flights: If you are flying in for the event, you will fly into SYR (Syracuse Airport). The airport is approximately 20 min from the event HQ.

Driving: we are within 2 hours of Albany, Rochester, Buffalo. and Watertown. We are within 4 hours of Toronto, Boston, Philadelphia, Montreal, Jersey and NYC.

Accommodations: There are many hotels in Syracuse, but there are a few that are closer to the event that we suggest. Last year, many women teamed up to rent an airbnb with hot tubs and firepits to make the event even more spectacular.

The camp theme this year is monsters on vacation. Think Universal Studios classics - Bride of Frankenstein, Dracula, Swamp Thing...meets Elvira, Crypt Keeper, Michael Myers and more.

Due to the tiered structure of registration, we will not be offering any refunds.

Camp registrations are completely transferable up until the WEEK BEFORE CAMP. It is up to you to find someone to pay you for your camp spot, or to go in your place in the event you are unable to attend. Please just let us know who will be attending in the event of a change.

There are no DAY PASSES, we will not be able to accommodate drop-ins.

All campers are responsible for their own food (we will have a food truck on site). All campers should expect to pay entry fees to Haunted House if you wish to attend. There will be massage therapists on site, they must be reserved in advance. (The sign up sheet for therapists will be released in Sept.) Massages will not be included in camp cost.

What if I don't know anyone attending camp?

Come anyways! We have so many ladies who come alone and leave with new friends and a support system that long outlasts camp. We have managed to attract the best ladies, and mean girls are not allowed!

What if i am a Black Belt, can I attend?

Umm yes girl, please. Come share your knowledge and get to know some new friends! Lets network together!

I just started, I am afraid I won't get anything out of it.

You will walk away with such a passion for jiu jitsu! The women here will make you feel like a necessary part of our community. Katie and myself are such amazing teachers that we are able to meet any student where they are at, and build skill from the very first day.

Can I come for just one day?

Yes, you can. But the camp price remains the same.

Do I have to participate in all training sessions and excursions?

No, you may do as little or as much as you like. For many women, these camps are like a mini-vacation...so PLEASE take care of yourself.

If i fly in, do I have to rent a car?

You can if you want, but most of our ladies are super awesome and can help transport and also share accommodations.

All campers should plan to arrive between 3-4. Light refreshments will be available upon arrival. Training begins at 5 PM and is set to conclude at 7:30. Food truck arrival, team dinner and choice between staying at the school for a Halloween Themed Paint and Sip or attending Fright Nights Haunted House! There is something for everyone!

There is a special morning drilling and wrestling session being offered. This is not mandatory, but rather added for the campers who require more physical movement, cardio and or need additional wrestling instructional exposure. Training takes place from 10-11, wrestling shoes are suggested.

Training session 3 is scheduled from 12-2:30 PM. Campers will go take a nap or get ready for afternoon activities. The group will meet for lunch at Meier's Creek at 5:00 PM, where we will be dressed up as monsters on Vacation. We will play cornhole and a variety of games on the country side while dressed in our amazing costumes. This is no doubt going to be a highlight of this trip. The food and scenery here is to die for. Following our dinner, we shall meet back at the school for an evening of fun competitions such as Karaoke, bobbing for apples, and more TBA.

Welcome to the final day! Large raffle baskets are raffled off today! Gi training will get started at 9:30 and end at 12:00, which concludes camp. This final session will include a 30 min Q&A with instructors from 9-9:30. So please come early if you have questions on anything ranging from diet, to mindset, to technique.
