About this trip

Gastronomy Tour of Brittany – April 15-22, 2024

Your Guide: Simon Renault

Join us on this trip through Brittany, France, where you will experience the richness of the Breton “terroir.” The tour is an exploration of the food of this region of France, from the farm to the table.

Brittany's culinary wealth comes from generations of humble peasant cooking. Whether ingredients come from the farm, the field and orchard, or from the seacoast, they are all valued for their quality. Each meal is served with pride.

You will witness how people's passion for their food heritage translates into culinary delights and how centuries of this relationship with farm-fresh food has created local styles and specialties. We will learn which apple varieties make the best hard cider, how salt became a trademark of Breton baking, and how an innkeeper on Mont Saint Michel earned a reputation for wood-fired omelets and salt lamb in the late 1800s.

You will also meet with oyster farmers, visit age-old farmers markets and tour one of the oldest operating flour mills in France. And of course, we will taste the famous buckwheat galette in a "creperie," along with a cup of world-renowned Breton hard cider.

Brittany, known as the Celtic part of France, has a rich and deep culture. This tour will be a delight for the senses while teaching you much about a culture that’s proud of its rich food history.

Traveling can be stressful, but we take the worry out of travel by handling all the hard bits for you. We do the planning, book the hotels, and reserve your restaurant. We know the villages to visit, the vineyards to tour, and the cooking classes to attend. We set all this up for you. Then we make your trip easy. First we pick you up at the airport in a small van and whisk you to your hotel. We travel with you from place to place, from activity to activity, and finally deliver you back to the airport for your flight home.

This trip exceeded my expectations!! Both Mimi, our "cultural guide", and Roberto, our Spanish teacher, were perfect for this experience, and did a masterful job of collaborating to meet the needs of everyone in the group. The whole was delightful and very comfortable, including the pool and patio, a welcome oasis on warm sunny afternoons! The cultural experiences were exceptional, and really made me want to experience more of this very special region and its' people. And the food in Oaxaca was fabulous. It'll be hard to enjoy American-style "Mexican food".

For me, this trip will be up there with "one-of-lifetime" beautiful experiences, because it was well organized, with a tone of flexibility. Every single one of the daily excursions was fascinating, enjoyable and interesting,. I felt taken care of, and I won't forget to mention the increase of conversing in Spanish with more confidence..

I had a great experience! Loved getting acquainted with Oaxaca, meeting new people and making new friends. The program was well balanced with class time, places of local interest---visiting Teotilain Del Valle, was one of my favs, it I HAD to choose. I thought there was a good amount of time to explore on our own and I felt very safe. Monte Alban was also, amazing. Good choices for eatting out with the group. Mimi and Roberto worked well together--and I would add that in my case, as the week progressed, I found it harder to keep up with the pace and could have use a bit more translation to English. Having said that, I still got so much out of speaking in class and outside of class---I was a bit out of my comfort zone, but that's not a criticism--it has pushed me to want to continue to learn and speak the language. Thank you Bob and Cicely for a great experience, I appreciate all the work that was done to prepare us for a great adventure! -Gloria

My Spanish improved when i wasn't looking. How did that happen? Delicious dinners every night. Great to be with a small group.
