About this trip

** Scroll down this page to view the complete, day by day, itinerary**

Experience history, culture, the arts, and Spanish language learning on our 8-day/7-night immersion trip to Mexico City. This trip is designed for students at the Basic III level, with all activities conducted in both English and Spanish. Your program directors, Chelsea and Dominique will be available to provide translations and language correction when necessary. In addition to bilingual activities, we will have 10 hours of structured classroom time throughout the duration of the 8-day trip.

CDMX, unlike most big cities in Latin America, is not just a place for a layover, it's a destination in its own right. Having experienced quite the renaissance, CDMX has ditched its reputation of being dingy and dangerous and is quickly becoming a major destination known for its culture, art, and gastronomy. With an approximate population of 21.3 million people, Mexico City is a bustling metropolis that balances a rich history and tradition with modern innovation and world-class amenities.

From a stroll through the charming La Condesa neighborhood, to ride downtown on the overloaded metro there is something for everyone in Mexico City. Plus, you'll truly be hard-pressed to find a city that beats CDMX when it comes to food, art, and museums.

With so much to see, do, eat and drink in Mexico City a week is enough time to just get your toes wet in exploring this incredible city. We will start our adventure by getting settled into a quaint boutique hotel which will serve as our home base for 7 nights and is the perfect place to come back to after a long day exploring the city or a night of salsa ;)

During our time together we will immerse ourselves in history, culture, and everyday life in Mexico City through a diverse array of activities. A few of the major highlights of this trip are our visits to many of CDMX's art and history museums, a night at the famous folkloric ballet, a morning boat ride down the river in Xochimilco with mariachis and marimbas aboard, stuffing our faces on unique Mexican fare at Mercado Jamaica, drinking tequila in Plaza Garibaldi and staring out across the city from the top of the Teotihuacán pyramids!

Itinerary

Day One
Arrival in CDMX & Welcome Dinner

Participants will be flying in from a variety of different places, therefore, travelers are welcome to choose the flight path that best suits their travel preferences and needs. That being said, we encourage participants to book flights that arrive in Mexico City (CDMX) in time to get settled in before the welcome dinner that evening. If you need assistance booking your international airfare please let us know!

Upon arriving at the airport, your Program Directors will be waiting to escort you to the hip La Reforma or La Condesa neighborhood via private shuttle (30-minute drive). Once in the heart of the city, you will be checked into your hotel and be given a brief orientation of the area. If you need any assistance going to the bank, store, pharmacy, etc., Chelsea or Dominique will be more than happy to accompany you.

In the event, you arrive early in the morning and would like to coordinate any specific activities during the day just let us know so we can accommodate your request!

Later that evening we will enjoy an incredible welcome dinner at our favorite fusion restaurant El Nudo Negro!

The Heart of Travel was born out of a deep-rooted love and passion for travel, art, history, food, nature, culture and adventure as well as a call to give back to the communities and people that had already provided us with so much. The travel industry has long been bombarded with double decker tour busses, beach front resorts and cruise ships, often at the expense of the local communities. As a response to this failing system, we began a boutique travel company that allows clients to explore new places in an authentic and non-touristy way, offering travelers a more intimate and unique experience all while removing the stress and hassle of researching, planning, bargain hunting, reserving and more that goes along with planning a trip or vacation.

What a great trip! Great accommodations, great food and great guides. Great company too. The scenery and wildlife were almost too much to take in. Thanks, again, to Chelsea and Heart of Travel for everything they do to make our travels so easy and enjoyable.

I highly recommend the HoT team if you're looking to get the most out of your trip to Guatemala. I have known Chelsea for a while and was delighted to be able to use the HoT teams services. From the moment I outlined what we were looking for, Chelsea made sure to get me all the information I needed and a quote really quickly. We arranged the Acetenango volcano hike with HoT and it couldn't have been better. Our guides were incredible and went above and beyond (including carrying our backpacks - this hike is not easy!) and we had the best time. I felt incredibly safe and well looked after. Chelsea also made sure we had a ton of food and snacks, even catering for a vegan which is not easy for an overnight expedition with very little amenities! We also booked transfers in and around Guatemala with HoT - they all went very smoothly and every trip was well organized. When we threw in a last minute change, they were super accommodating which meant we were able to squeeze in even more sightseeing! If you're into attention to detail, great customer service, flexibility and a sense that someone else is doing the thinking and organising for you, choose HoT!

We did the Mountaintour with Quads. Grest Tour, niice guide, delicious food. Even my 15 year old son enjoyed it so much. Also we enjoyed the volcano Tour. One by horse and one hiking. Sat in the "Lava" had picknick and of course warm marshmellows. Unforgetable day.

I found Heart of Travel through a blog by a Claire. I inquired about a shuttle between Guatemala City and Antigua, and how it was complicated by meeting up with family members and luggage. Chelsea met us at the airport with two vans. It was an incredible way to begin our ten days vacation. We used Heart all through the week. Chelsea also set us up for our return trip to airport and Rio Dulce, and the Covid tests needed for return to US. Thank you!! I can't say it enough. Thank you also for Hobbitland, volcano and coffee farm. I leave feeling we did some of the real Guatemala.

One of the best cooking classes I've ever done! The Heart of Travel + Cuscun Team catered the meals to be veggie friendly for us so we were able to try traditional Guatemalan food with a veggie twist - which is difficult to find in the country. The views, atmosphere, outdoor rooftop kitchen, and mainly the company was incredible. Felt like we were getting together with old friends, having some drinks, and making a meal together. Learned a lot and 100% recommend this! Antigua highlight for sure!
