      About this trip

** Scroll down this page to view the complete, day by day, itinerary**

Experience history, culture, the arts, and Spanish language learning on our 8-day/7-night immersion trip to Mexico City. This trip is designed for students at the Basic III level, with all activities conducted in both English and Spanish. Your program directors, Dominique and Eimy, will be available to provide translations and language corrections when necessary. In addition to bilingual activities, we will have 10 hours of structured classroom time throughout the duration of the 8-day trip.

CDMX, unlike most big cities in Latin America, is not just a place for a layover, it's a destination in its own right. Having experienced quite the renaissance, CDMX has ditched its reputation of being dingy and dangerous and is quickly becoming a major destination known for its culture, art, and gastronomy. With an approximate population of 21.3 million people, Mexico City is a bustling metropolis that balances a rich history and tradition with modern innovation and world-class amenities.

From a stroll through the charming La Condesa neighborhood, to ride downtown on the overloaded metro there is something for everyone in Mexico City. Plus, you'll truly be hard-pressed to find a city that beats CDMX when it comes to food, art, and museums.

With so much to see, do, eat and drink in Mexico City a week is enough time to just get your toes wet in exploring this incredible city. We will start our adventure by getting settled into a quaint boutique hotel which will serve as our home base for 7 nights and is the perfect place to come back to after a long day exploring the city or a night of salsa ;)

During our time together we will immerse ourselves in history, culture, and everyday life in Mexico City through a diverse array of activities. A few of the major highlights of this trip are our visits to many of CDMX's art and history museums, a night at the famous folkloric ballet, a morning boat ride down the river in Xochimilco with mariachis and marimbas aboard, stuffing our faces on unique Mexican fare at Mercado Jamaica, drinking tequila in Plaza Garibaldi and staring out across the city from the top of the Teotihuacán pyramids!

The Heart of Travel was born out of a deep-rooted love and passion for travel, art, history, food, nature, culture and adventure as well as a call to give back to the communities and people that had already provided us with so much. The travel industry has long been bombarded with double decker tour busses, beach front resorts and cruise ships, often at the expense of the local communities. As a response to this failing system, we began a boutique travel company that allows clients to explore new places in an authentic and non-touristy way, offering travelers a more intimate and unique experience all while removing the stress and hassle of researching, planning, bargain hunting, reserving and more that goes along with planning a trip or vacation.

Heart of Travel provided a great shore excursion to Antigua for a reasonable price for our small group (6). I contacted Heart of Travel regarding shore excursions in Guatemala from the cruise ship port of Puerto Quetzal to Antigua. Chelsea Glass from Heart of Travel organized a wonderful small group excursion and provided flexible pricing dependent on group size, as I needed to gather a group. Chelsea was very responsive and answered my many questions. She created an itinerary for our group and tailored it to our timetable. Our guide/driver, Selvyn Herrera, picked us up at the cruise port and took us to Antigua. We had a walking tour of Antigua and some free time as well. Selvyn took the desires of the group into account. When we saw someone making fresh corn tortillas, we tried them. He even took one of the group to a local brewery to try the beer. We also went to the nearby town of San Juan del Obispo to a local chocolate maker, Chocolate Antigua, where we learned about the chocolate making process and sampled delicious hot chocolate. There were various flavours of both eating chocolate and chocolate for hot chocolate for sale. Great souvenirs! Next, we visited a local small coffee grower in Alotenango where we learned about the coffee making process and ate lunch prepared by the family. It was an excellent lunch of a traditional Guatemalan pepián chicken stew with homemade corn tortillas and really good coffee afterwards. We could also buy 1 pound bags of freshly roasted coffee beans. Again, great souvenirs! Selvyn was very responsive to the group, was very knowledgeable, spoke English well, drove safely, and got us back to the port to our ship in good time. We were all very happy with the shore excursion and with Selvyn.

Our private tour was wonderful. Our guide, Ely, was great. The port is so far away from everything and he made the entire trip enjoyable. Breakfast at Don Jose’s home was special. We really appreciated the authentic Guatemalan meal they fixed for us. The visit to the weaving location was fun and informative. We even got to get dressed up in traditional clothing. The time in Antigua was a. Great experience. Ely made sure that all of us were taken care of. I would highly recommend We Travel. We were kept informed from beginning to end.

Awesome. Thank you Chelsea for the curation - you heard what we wanted and put together a great collection of experiences. We have recommended you to others - this is how highly we rate your services. Oliverio and Antonio were so devoted to their culture and history in Peten - it came through in all they did for us. Selvyn worked so hard and is so knowledgeable about Mayan culture and the highland communities that we visited - he put everything out there for us, and we really appreciated this. Thank you all so much.

I just completed the Oaxaca 2022 Did de Muertos Trip with Heart of Travel and it was amazing. Such a surreal and gratifying experience. Learned so much in regards to the culture and celebrations and customs of the local people and enjoyed learning about their traditions. Heart of Travel made this entire experience so enjoyable and well rounded with cultural immersion experiences. Great accommodation choices and knowledgeable local guides. Their use of local guides to share their knowledge and love for their traditions and home is a great learning experience. I have partake in several of their trips and would highly recommend not only this trip but any they have to offer. They defintiley take care of you. Would travel with them again!!

I’ve just returned home from 17 days on Heart of Travel’s first fabulous trip to Spain. We visited Barcelona, Granada, Malaga, Seville, and Madrid— not to mention side trips to the smaller towns of Ronda and Cordoba. Chelsea and Pam amazed me daily! Their ability to research artsy boutique hotels, small family owned businesses for us to experience, along with their attention to detail and ability to respond to glitches was impressive. I loved going into two homes for cooking classes with delightful women. Our guided tour through Sagrada Familia was a highlight as was spending time in Parque Guell in a Barcelona. I thoroughly enjoyed our kayak outing and would have liked to have done a city bike tour for a bit of variety and exercise too! We saw amazing citadels, mosques, cathedrals, and a bullring. Thank you ladies for organizing a wonderful tour and helping to create a “family” of fellow travelers.
