Thrilling cycling, Amazon journeys, and Galapagos wonders. Pioneering adventure travel since 1990.

The guides were awesome and spoke English well and although we got stuck in a less than optimal bus (due to our bus breaking down the day prior to arrival), I highly recommend this adventure. It's more of a sightseeing and educational trip than a train-cation, as the biking is mostly downhill and short duration. I would recommend bringing your own bike pedals/shoes as the bike pedals are not in the best condition. Be sure to plan a trip with less time on the bus than we did (e.g. skip Chimborazo...although I did enjoy it there!).

The biking, hiking, hotels and guides were all excellent. Unfortunately, to see all the sights on the itinerary, we often had a lot of time in the bus (more than 6 hrs/day), and usually arrived at a very nice hotel late in the evening, being too exhausted to even enjoy dinner. On a side note, it was challenging to navigate the WeTravel and Dutchman Adventure websites to find details about the itinerary ahead of time - or perhaps details weren't available.

We really enjoyed our guides, Jorge and Esteban. They were knowledgeable and approachable and easy-going, they kept the groove safe, but also gave us some freedoms to explore within reason.. We learned a lot about local communities and culture. Also our driver and lunch/bike helper were great. The food was wonderful and the accommodations were spot on and high-end and we really enjoyed them, but we didn’t get to spend enough time at each hotel. We got to see more of Ecuador than we had imagined, but would have liked to have spent a little more time on (bikes!) and a little less time driving. Spending 20 to 30 minutes on the bike after two hours of driving was just not quite enough for us. Honestly, there was too much time in the bus, the bus couldn’t keep up with traffic because it was mechanically not super sound and not very fast, and we were in the back of the bus where we were exposed to exhaust fumes the entire time and unfortunately, we had to crack windows during rain, storms, which made everyone in the bus cold, but otherwise we were just breathing these exhaust fumes which really impacted us and gave us irritability and headaches. I think we were all unprepared for spending 4 to 6 hours in the bus every single day. I think we all thought that it would be 2 to 3 hours, so without that preparation it seemed extreme and created a lot of irritability in the group by the last day. In fact, a lot of people didn’t even want to participate in activities the last day because they were so tired of being in the bus and exhausted from breathing the exhaust fumes for days.

The guides and accommodations are amazing. I wish everyday of the mountain biking was like the first day and the bikes were better maintained.

This was an unforgettable trip and one I will truly remember for the rest of my life. From start to finish, the guides were exceptional — knowledgeable, kind, attentive, and deeply passionate about Ecuador. They made the experience feel personal and seamless, and their care for the group and the places we visited was evident every single day. The accommodations were absolutely stunning and far exceeded my expectations. Each place we stayed felt thoughtfully chosen, beautiful, and unique, and they added so much to the overall experience of the journey. My only small critique is that we spent more time on the bus than anticipated, which sometimes meant arriving at these incredible accommodations quite late and then needing to leave again early the next morning. As a result, there was limited time to fully enjoy some of these special places. I understand that part of this was due to circumstances beyond anyone’s control, and perhaps timing could have been adjusted slightly to allow for more time at the lodgings. That said, this is a minor note in what was otherwise an extraordinary, well-curated, and deeply memorable adventure. I would wholeheartedly recommend this trip to anyone looking for a meaningful, beautifully guided experience in Ecuador.

When planning our honeymoon in Ecuador we knew we wanted to fit in a biking trip. We did a lot of research of various companies and settled on the Biking Dutchman owing to the interesting itineraries, reasonable prices and the rave reviews from previous satisfied tourists. We did the 3 day tour including Cotopaxi, Quilotoa and Chimborazo. We were the only couple on the tour, meaning it was essentially a 3 day private tour of Ecuador. Andreas, our guide, and Cesar, our driver, were excellent from start to finish. Andreas was always available and thoughtful. He is very knowledgeable and was passionate about Ecuador, its history, culture and of course, biking. Cesar was also amazing throughout. We always felt safe with his driving and it was a comfort to know that the support vehicle was always close by if we had a mechanical or any other issue (thankfully we didn't!). He was extremely helpful and prepared the most delicious lunches that accommodated our dietary requirements. Each day offered us a different experience. The first an extensive tour of Cotopaxi natural park, with noone else around. Andreas led us to natural springs and Inca ruins plus the descent from 4800m. That night we slept in a quirky hotel situated at ~4200m, on the edge of a volcanic crater, where in addition our host made us a delicious vegetarian dinner and a wood-burning stove in our room kept us toasty warm overnight as the outside temperature dropped to 0C. The 2nd day we visted Quilotoa lake, before descending to a traditional market where we could buy local produce and souvenirs. The biking trails were a mix of asphalt and dirt tracks and were deserted of people. You would only find these with the help of a guide. That night we stayed in Riobamba and Andreas gave us a private tour of the city while Cesar prepared our food for the following day. The 3rd day was the pinnacle. We hiked the final 300m to the basestation of Chimborazo situated at just over 5000m. We then biked down flowing single track with a spectacular backdrop of arguably the 'highest' mountain on earth. Andreas and Cesar, then proceeded to guide us down 2500m of winding road decent to Ambato via settlements of the indigenous communities and impressive gorges. Biking Dutchman also provided us with bespoke transport to our next destination at a very reasonable price and Cesar was on hand to take us there. We were very impressed with the service quality and care provided during our 3 day trip. The hardtail Trek bikes are of sufficent quality for the distance and terrain but could potentially benefit from a service and replacement tyres and pedals. If you're thinking at all about doing a bike tour in Ecuador we thoroughly recommend Biking Dutchman and Cesar and Andreas!
