      About this trip

One of Mexicó's most vibrant states, Oaxaca oozes with rich flavor, both literally and figuratively. From small batches of smoky artisanal mezcal, to complex moles, spiced hot chocolates and balls of stringy quesillo, Oaxaca is a food and spirit lovers playground. The delight to the senses doesn't end there! In Oaxaca you can find yourself sitting on the edge of a turquoise water pool, high up in the mountains, looking out at the petrified waterfalls of Hierve el Agua by morning and later conclude your evening joining a celebratory street parade!

You can read the full itinerary here.

With an occasion for celebration most days out of the year, there's never a dull moment in Oaxaca, especially during the Day of the Day and Guelaguetza festivities. While Oaxaca is one of México's more economically challenged states, it is rich in culture, resilience and creativity. Not to mention, it's home to some of the most beautiful and ornate Zapotec weavings as well as impressive pottery and artwork so shoppers be sure to bring an extra suitcase to take your goodies home!

For our Oaxaca trips we settle into a charming bed and breakfast located on a quiet side of town just blocks from the hustle and bustle of the historic center. Our days will be filled exploring Oaxaca City and the surrounding areas including the Zapotec ruins of Monte Albán, the vast agave fields and family run mezcalerias throughout the valley and the enchanting mountain towns home to artisans and craftsman.

We will also get you off the beaten path by visiting some of the women receiving micro financing loans from Fundación En Vía to learn more about women led small businesses in the region and sustainable models for micro financing.

Lastly, we will eat A LOT of delicious food, sip on mezcal, join in parades, see amazing art, stroll through the Zócalo and have an overall amazing time!

The Heart of Travel was born out of a deep-rooted love and passion for travel, art, history, food, nature, culture and adventure as well as a call to give back to the communities and people that had already provided us with so much. The travel industry has long been bombarded with double decker tour busses, beach front resorts and cruise ships, often at the expense of the local communities. As a response to this failing system, we began a boutique travel company that allows clients to explore new places in an authentic and non-touristy way, offering travelers a more intimate and unique experience all while removing the stress and hassle of researching, planning, bargain hunting, reserving and more that goes along with planning a trip or vacation.

What an amazing experience!!!! I am a single woman in my 60's who wanted to travel to Guatemala alone but didn't feel safe to do it. Heart of Travel made this dream trip come true for me. With the knowledgable guide of Selvyn, I was well cared for and highly informed about life and culture in Guatemala. Before my trip Chelsey, the owner of Heart of Travel, had a zoom conference to get to know me and my interests. Chelsey hand designed this trip to my needs and interests. Guatemala exceeded my expectations. Each day I was more and more surprised by the service of Heart of Travel and the beauty and colors of Guatemala. I was most impressed that Heart of Travel found local vendors ,for example a weaving coop ,to help individual single moms to help support their families. A great experience. I want to go to Cuba next with Heart of Travel. I love you guys!!!!!

The journey to the Galapagos turned out to be a bucket list adventure I hadn't realized I was longing for. It was simply incredible. I wholeheartedly recommend it to everyone. I ended up booking this trip because it was the only one available that fit into my academic schedule, and I'm so thankful I did. This marks my third journey with Heart of Travel, and I'm eagerly anticipating my fourth in August. Heart of Travel consistently excels in crafting their trips. They have a knack for selecting tour leaders who are truly passionate about their work.

This was an amazing trip! The itinerary was fantastic and the tour leader, Chiva, made it a personal adventure for each of us. She made a sincere effort to get to know each participant and ensure that theirs was a wonderful experience. The hotels were very good, and the restaurants were equally as wonderful. I loved the preorder option at some of the restaurants because it made efficient use of our time while giving us local options without asking a million questions. Isabela Island was like a fairytale, and I would have loved an extra half of day (or more) there. Julio in Isabela Island was my favorite local guide. His demeanor was laid back and patient (which is really helpful with a herd of women!) Wildlife Discovery was definitely that! We encountered so many animals on the land in the sea. The snorkeling excursions were definite highlights.

This was a fabulous day! We relaxed and soaked and got acquainted with some of our trip mates. The pools were amazing and lunch service was very good. The food was delicious: best potato soup I had during my time in Ecuador! Checking in and out was easy for us since we had the group reservation. Our driver, Mario, was professional, yet friendly and accommodating.

A once in a lifetime opportunity to see nature in it's glory, with minimal human interference. Great leaders, food and experiences. I fully enjoyed my adventure in the Galapagos Islands.

Heart of Travel is the best for magical and ethical vacations! Chelsea and her incredible team first won me over in Guatemala in 2023 as they planned a beautiful trip that allowed us to see and experience so many different places, people, and things. A helicopter ride, a volcano hike, spa day, meeting the most badass Mayan weaver!!, a once-in a lifetime sunset tour in Tikal - done. I'm still trying to get over this trip lol. They knocked it out of the park again in Cuba for NYE! Chelsea and the spectacular Paloma had us dancing multiple nights away, eating the BEST food, and seeing ALL the sights while also giving us ample opportunity to support the Cuban people and educating us on why that is so important. You will leave their trips with new memories, new friends, and possibly, some new perspectives. Do it!!!

Cuba, you have left an undeniable mark on my soul… Your people, your colors, your food, your history… Thank you for sharing this world with us! Cannot wait for our next trip! We love you 🥰

I just returned from a two week trip to Ecuador and the Galapagos. The trip was an incredible balance of learning, discovery, and recreation. Both the local guides and the Heart of Travel coordinator, Chiva, were excellent!!! The accommodations, food, and itinerary were fantastic. I will definitely travel with Heart of Travel again.
