About this trip

One of Mexico's most vibrant states, Oaxaca oozes with rich flavor, both literally and figuratively. From small batches of smoky artisanal mezcal, to complex moles, spiced hot chocolates and balls of stringy quesillo, Oaxaca is a food and spirit lovers' playground. The delight to the senses doesn't end there! In Oaxaca you can find yourself sitting on the edge of a turquoise water pool, high up in the mountains, looking out at the petrified waterfalls of Hierve el Agua by morning and later conclude your evening joining a celebratory street parade!

You can read the full itinerary here.

With an occasion for celebration most days out of the year, there's never a dull moment in Oaxaca, especially during the Day of the Day and Guelaguetza festivities. While Oaxaca is one of México's more economically challenged states, it is rich in culture, resilience, and creativity. Not to mention, it's home to some of the most beautiful and ornate Zapotec weavings as well as impressive pottery and artwork so shoppers make sure to bring an extra suitcase to take your goodies home!

For our Oaxaca trips, we settle into a charming bed and breakfast located on a quiet side of town just blocks from the hustle and bustle of the historic center. Our days will be filled exploring Oaxaca City and the surrounding areas including the Zapotec ruins of Monte Albán, the vast agave fields and family-run mezcalerias throughout the valley and the enchanting mountain towns home to artisans and craftsman.

We will also get you off the beaten path by visiting some of the women receiving micro-financing loans from Fundación En Vía to learn more about women-led small businesses in the region and sustainable models for micro-financing.

Lastly, we will eat A LOT of delicious food, sip on mezcal, join in parades, see amazing art, stroll through the Zócalo and have an overall amazing time!

The Heart of Travel was born out of a deep-rooted love and passion for travel, art, history, food, nature, culture and adventure as well as a call to give back to the communities and people that had already provided us with so much. The travel industry has long been bombarded with double decker tour busses, beach front resorts and cruise ships, often at the expense of the local communities. As a response to this failing system, we began a boutique travel company that allows clients to explore new places in an authentic and non-touristy way, offering travelers a more intimate and unique experience all while removing the stress and hassle of researching, planning, bargain hunting, reserving and more that goes along with planning a trip or vacation.

Prompt service. Excellent driver and comfortable ride. Heart of Travel made my arrival from Guatemala City to Antigua very enjoyable. I would highly recommend their services.
This was my second trip with Heart of Travel and it was perfect in every way. The Parque Hotel was beautiful and in a wonderful location. Dylan and Daniel were the best guides and Allie—an added bonus— The Heart of Travel’s photographer. Daniel, the local guide, is so knowledgeable that you will learn so much from him. Dylan also. The Restaurant’s Chelsea picked were all different and wonderful. Lisa, our food tour guide, gave us the best experience at The Market we went to. I loved Mexico City and I look forward to my next journey with Heart of Travel—where ever that may be. Thank you Everyone who made this trip so perfect and memorable. CRP
Even though I speak Fair Spanish, I was a little intimidated to tour Mexico City on my own, given the size and complexity of getting around. Our tour guide showed us the best of Mexico City, with no hassles.

Fun, Fun, Fun! We traveled with The Heart of Travel, our favorite for Spanish-speaking destinations. We had a perfect mix of history, culture, learning, sharing, and food and drink. Día de los Muertos at the cemetery was very special. Our accommodation at an AirB&B was perfect for our group. Our local guide, Gabo, and Heart of Travel guide, Ana, are the best.

This was the best trip to Mexico we have ever been on. If you didn't go to Puerto Escondido as an add on, you missed a very relaxing 4 night side trip, to a very friendly small town.
